Hunting for Food (Closed)

Why couldn't she just hunt alone? Curlyfeather would much rather have just the prey and herself than have to clanmates she barely knew tag along with her. Since her accident, she had been pretty much the opposite of social, only talking to cat she already knew and liked. So having company only made her already not too good hunting skills decrease further. Being deaf combined with her weak legs made hunting hard enough, and now distractions came into play. How amazing. But she understood Littlestar's concern about predators, and she knew everyone in the clan was especially worried about her. With the exception of Cedarstorm, even her friends didn't think she was capable of being a good warrior. And maybe they were right. Upon reaching a suitable place for hunting, she quickly looked over her companions. Olivelily was a cat she didn't mind, though she didn't really know her at all. And Ferretpaw had been born after her accident. Wow, had she really been deaf for that long? By now she supposed that she probably should have gotten used to it, but she had been right when thinking the pain of seeing mouths moving without sound would ever stop. Deciding she was ready to hunt, she gestured in the direction she scented the most prey in.
"Let's start hunting," Curlyfeather decided, words short and clipped. The less time she spent talking, the better. Maybe they could actually have substantial time for hunting that wasn't wasted on making her feel like a failure. Well, hunting had the same affect. Digging her claws into the ground, she scented the air. At least she still had her sense of smell.

Ferretpaw sulked back, unsure, and she let her gaze fix on Curlyfeather, moving away innocently whenever the two exchanged glances by accident. The apprentice was more than hesitant to follow the deaf warrior into the forest, and the was an awkwardness that dwelt within the trio as they walked, searching for prey. She flexed her claws, letting the cold soil slip between her toes, the feeling making her shudder. There was no doubt in her mind that Curlyfeather was a competent warrior, but the horrifying idea that a monster, screaming and hurtling as they do, would wipe out the pretty she-cat in a second, without her ever having noticed it.

"H-uh, yeah." she jolted, making an attempt to nod her head as much as possible, maybe a bit too much. She lowered her head, face burning, focusing her senses on the world around her. She sank to the ground, pausing a second on her haunches before continuing to walk, crouched, following the scent of a lizard. Quickly and effortlessly, the strong apprentice pushed herself forward when the prey was just in sight, and caught up, biting deep into its back before it could take refuge. Ferretpaw flicked her ears proudly, raising her catch for the two warriors to see.

Olivelily padded cheerfully at the end of the patrol, ears perked and mouth open, searching for any prey nearby. As soon as Curlyfeather uttered those three words, Olivelily was off tracking the tantalizing scent of a toad. Her mouth watered the closer she got at the thought of sinking her teeth into the plump creature, and soon, she was only a few tail-lengths from her prey. With a quiet licking of her jaws, she pounced, landing squarely on top of the toad. She quickly finished it off before so much as a surprised croak could escape from its mouth.

Curlyfeather rolled her eyes at Ferretpaw's awkwardness, wondering why so many cats found it so hard to act normal around her because of her deafness. Whatever. Olivelily was acting like the responsible warrior that she was, so that was great. Scenting the air, she caught the scent of a mouse. Following its trail, she located the small brown creature. Yet as she was about to to stalk it, a very close bird caught her eye. But it wasn't just sitting there. No, it was flapping it's wings, as if bragging to her about how bad she was at catching birds. Taunting her. Too stubborn to let it get away and catch the mouse instead, she lunged for it, forgetting about proper technique and anything she learned in her training. That bird was something she needed to catch. It flapped away long before she reached it, and she cursed under her breath. Looking back, the mouse was gone now too. Fox dung.

Ferretpaw's eyes traced away, following the fleeing mouse. She shot Curlyfeather a kind look, brimming with the same, sappy pity. Of course she'd miss that... the she-cat thought, even thou it ashamed her that she was thinking like that. She wanted to be supportive, she really did, but in her mind it all fell flat and she couldn't help but be realistic, at least with herself. "It's not a big deal..." she hummed under her breath, shooting Olivelily a sideways glance.

Afterwards, twitching her whiskers, the apprentice went on, trying to pursue a second piece of prey for her Clan. The sweet, meaty scent of another mouse drew her attention, and she spun around, spotting the dark gray critter nibbling away in the grass. They met eyes for only a split second and she lunged forward, with a strong blow from her paw draining the life from the rodent.
