Darting for food (Closed):

Swiftstep was waiting at the camp entrance, ready to lead a hunting patrol. The clan needed food so he brought the responsibility upon himself to hunt for the clan. It was pretty early but not so early that everyone was asleep. Some were starting to get out of their dens. It was also a nice day, not too chilly or windy. A pretty good hunting day. Starclan blessed them.

The newly-named Softbreeze approached his sister's mate, giving him a friendly smile. "Hello! A-are you looking for a hunting patrol? I-I would love to come, i-if you don't mind, of course."

Dovepaw approached the two cats with a casual half smile on her muzzle. She was completely, utterly bored, and engaging in hunting would put both her paws and her mind at work. Without even asking for permission to join, the gray tabby went ahead and placed herself in the patrol.
"Hey, gang," She greeted them, lazily, "I'll be coming along."

Rosepaw stared into the open clearing, the bleak colors all blended together against the blinding white of the melting snow. Her interest was taken from the colors of the world to the hues of the pelts of clan-cats, who were slowly but surely clumping together and chatting. She had seen it many times but had never participated. It was either a territory patrol or a Hunting patrol... Rosepaw thought boredly.  This kind of thing happened so much in the leaf-bare, and she didn't really care. But she hated the sight of the smiling apprentices, who were so excited to take part in it. 

The thought of hunting was not fun to her- be it because she had a hard time hunting or she didn't particularly like any of the apprentices in the clan. But, she needed to prove herself to her leader and to the warriors of the clan that she was capable. Otherwise, she would never become a warrior, and that was something she feared every day.

Steadily she lifted herself from her nest- which was cold even though she had been resting in it. A frown held its place on her face as she slinked out of the den and into the clearing. Her annoyingly bright red pelt stood out against the plain white snow, and her bright yellow pupils did her no justice either. Just out of the corner of her eye she could already see other cat's take notice of her, she stood out so much. Why? Why did starclan curse her with a blood red pelt that didn't match any of the territories anywhere? Her sigh was short as she approached the group of cats who intended to go on the patrol.

"I will also be attending." Her voice felt cold and tired, like that of a senior warrior grieving a loss or an elder who had lived out their life- except Rosepaw was much younger. But the pain she felt every day that made her unsheath her claws and made her muscles clench was from her absent family, her absent friends, and her absent future. But she stopped crying about it a long time ago, as she did talking about it. She wanted so desperately to talk about it to someone but they would think she was greedy, always talking about her issues instead of worrying about the issues of the clan. Her eyes wandered from the sleek yet shaggy pelts of her clanmates to the entrance and exit of the clan, the wilderness outside of the clan always felt like it would be ideal compared to being in camp, but she never knew why. Windclan was her home, and as much as the cats in the clan didn't like her she loved her clan and she would always be loyal to it, no matter what others say. With loyalty in mind, she awaited either the arrival fo more cats to join in or for them to begin.

Swiftstep nodded and grinned at the apprentices and warrior. "Let us get going then! We wanna get at least two each before we head back!" the tom purred. He led the patrol out of the camp and into the territory. "Okay, let's meet back here when we finish. Call if you need any assistance with a predator. Let's hunt!" With the last statement, the warrior left them to do his hunting.

Swiftstep was now stalking an unsuspecting fat mouse. He inched closer and soon pounced. The tom caught the mouse and grabbed it with his jaws. He hid it and continued his hunt.

Softbreeze nodded, darting off on his own once the party had left the camp. Though he still kept the others within eyesight, he loved nothing more than racing the moors on his own. Soon enough he spotted a hare, lean from leafbare. However lean it was, though, Softbreeze knew that it would feed one of his clanmates, so he dropped into a crouch. As soon as he was close enough, he darted out and brought his jaws down on its neck, killing the hare in one fell swoop. He covered it in snow to retrieve on the way back to camp.

'Hunting Dice' : 6

Her mind wandered as she quickly darted through the forest, leaving the others to their own. She could hear her heart beat loudly and sporadically in her ear as adrenaline pumped through her veins like a snake's poison. The trees were inconsistent and often spread far apart- making it easier to see anything through the still thickly-layered snow that covered the ground and all its inhabitants. It took a few moments of running before she spotted a white and brown rabbit- its ear's flopped over on one side as it kicked away snow from itself. 

Rosepaw immediately stopped running, halting in the snow was difficult, and she ended up skidding through the white slush. The frost pricked at her paw pads but she let the pain work it's way up her legs, she had more important matters to deal with. The rabbit glanced in her direction- but Rosepaw managed to dart behind a bush before it could see her. She let out a quiet breath of relief and then slowly made her way out from behind the bush and stalked the prey. Her muscles loosened and her heart-beat slowed down- she could no longer hear it's loud drumming in her ear. The only things she heard was the wind blowing against crisp leaves, that and her own breathing. 

She unsheathed her claws and let her tail rest against the snow- lowering her stomach to where it brushed against the chill-inducing ground. Then, she pounced. With her eyes locked on her target everything seemed to be in slow-motion, and then she realized. "Wow! I am actually going to do it!" She exclaimed excitedly, and, the rabbit heard her. It backed up against the ground and skidded to the right, evading her pounce. Rosepaw's face changed from excited to distressed as she realized how stupid it was to say that out loud, but she couldn't give up on this rabbit, she had already tried so hard... she just needed to get it! Swiftly she slid on the icy-snow and ran full speed at the rabbit her breathing became more difficult but at the same time more rhythmic as she chased the rabbit. Out of the corner of her eye for a split-second, she saw the warrior that had made the patrol, Swiftstep. And she couldn't help but feel grateful to him, he gave her this chance.


But she couldn't get pre-occupied, she had to catch up to the rabbit. Rosepaw stopped thinking about anything else other than this hunt, it was too important. Her pace quickened with every thought she erased from her mind, and soon, she felt like everything was going by so quickly that it was all a white blur, just like it had been in the camp when she had been still laying in her nest, just watching the day go by from the sidelines. The sidelines were not as fun as the real thing, not by a long shot. This hunt, this patrol, it was all way better than sitting in her den all day. Then, as soon as she had pounced for the rabbit, it had run and she had caught up with it. For a split second- her bright yellow pupils met with its dark orbs and all she saw was the emotionless face of a rabbit- their life could save another life in her clan, so it was worth it. It was worth it, Rosepaw kept telling herself that as she served into the rabbit, tripping over it in the process. This managed to halt the rabbit and let herself go tumbling in the other direction. It wasn't the best tactic but she couldn't just prepare to pounce whilst running.. could she? It was too late now, the rabbit lay still in the snow, but still, she could see the side's of its flank moving up and down.


With her eyes in slits and her claws still unsheathed, she smiled. "Your life... was not in vain. Rest in starclan-- or wherever you creatures go." She set her claw on its neck and pushed down until she heard a slight crack. Then, the rabbit was dead, and she had successfully hunted for her clan. She grabbed its neck in her maw and hoisted it upward, throwing it up until the air and skillfully landing it on her back- another skill she had acquired which she proud of. Then, she leisurely made her way back to camp, ready to see if they had hunted anything.

"That was a v-very nice catch, Rosepaw!" Softbreeze purred warmly, trotting up to the apprentice. "We're l-lucky to have you on our p-patrol." After that his ears perked up, hearing a rabbit not too far away. The pale warrior carefully prowled towards it, spotting the the rabbit digging through the snow. He darted forward, relishing the burn of his muscles as he practically flew over the moors. He cut off the small mammal as it attempted a turn, and is squeaked in panic. Softbreeze quickly killed it before it had the chance to feel pain. He bowed his head in thanks to Starclan and hoisted the rabbit into his jaws, walking back to his clanmates. "I d-don't think I can carry any more than two rabbits, a-anyway. I'll watch you all and keep a-an eye out for predators." Softbreeze mewed as he placed his prey next to his caught hare.

Dovepaw followed the patrol with a bounce in her step and a glitter in her yellow eyes. Catching two pieces of prey couldn't be that difficult right? It shouldn't take forever, either. It wasn't like the gray tabby she-cat was in a rush to head back to camp and continue to suffer through boredom, though. She watched as first the leader of the patrol, then the other warrior on the patrol, then the other apprentice hunted. What a nice little patrol they had. Branching away from the others so that she could find her own prey, Dovepaw padded through the moorland like a cat on a mission. Her gray ears were pricked and her nose was slightly lifted so that various scents could come easily to her. It didn't take the apprentice very long to pick out the distinct scent of a bird. Immediately, the tabby made her way towards the small, feathered creature and tried to be as quiet as she could. The bird took no notice of her. Once she felt like she was close enough to leap, Dovepaw threw herself towards the bird in hopes of killing it and bringing it back to camp.

The feathered creature opened its jaws to let out a sound of pain and protest once the WindClan apprentice landed squarely on top of it. Dovepaw lowered her head swiftly and snapped the small things neck without remorse. There was always a lingering feeling of satisfaction once prey was caught, and the gray tabby was practically glowing with pride as she trotted back towards the group with the bird dangling from her mouth. However, once she gently set it down, the realization hit her, and the apprentice discovered that the prey she had caught was her namesake... a dove.

Swiftstep soon found a lone white rabbit sniffing around in the snow. He dropped down into a hunter's crouch once more and began to inch closer to his target. Once he was at a reasonable length away, the tom pounced. The warrior got up with empty paws. His catch ran away before he could even get there. He decided to try one more time elsewhere.
