"Minkpaw?" she called quietly. "Come on, we have a lot to do before dusk." Tansyheart withdrew her head from the apprentice den and padded a short distance away to wait for her newly-named apprentice. The young she-cat showed promise, and she sincerely hoped that Minkpaw was capable and hardworking.

Minkpaw stirred from her nest quietly and gave a gentle purr seeing it was her mentor waking her from her slumber. "Hm? Oh Tansyheart, good morning." She greeted the other, sleep clouded her eyes slightly, "What do you have in mind?" She asked, wonder replacing her mind for a few moments rather than thinking about how early it was.

Tansyheart nodded. "We're going to train," she informed the apprentice. "Follow me, I'll let you know when we're going to stop." She led Minkpaw out of camp, trotting steadily through ShadowClan territory.

After a short run, she stopped, indicating that Minkpaw should do the same. "Alright, stop here. Now, we're going to do some basic battle training to start out. Watch what I do," she instructed. "This fallen log will be the enemy." She lowered her stance and lashed out with her paw, her unsheathed claws leaving long, thin grooves in the rotting bark. "You try, now. I'll watch and see what you can improve on."

ooc: You might know some of this already, but just to make sure, I'll try to explain everything from the beginning. I realize that my explanation might be a bit confusing, so if you don't get part of it just ask and I'll rephrase it ;) Also, people write their battle summaries in different ways. You can figure out what works best for you. I learned from Jay Bird, so I write my summaries like her. If you haven't already, you should look in the Battle Rules for more specific guidelines about how to fight.

Each rank has stats, so the Apprentice rank has 20 HP and 80 SP. You can find the stats for each rank here. If you run out of SP, your cat must stop fighting, and if you run out of HP your cat must either collapse or run away from the battle.
When you attack, you pick a move that your cat's rank can use (you can find all the battle moves here). Each rank deals a different amount of damage (for example, using Front Paw Strike, as an apprentice Minkpaw would deal 6 damage, but as a Warrior, Tansyheart would deal 11 damage using the same move). Each move costs a certain amount of Stamina points, which can also be found in the Battle System for each move. With each higher rank, your character's stats get higher and they can use more moves.

Try to follow my example, and I'll cover stun moves in my next post.

The feline fallowed after Tansyheart, she was growing more and more nervous about training but didn't say much about her feelings, she knew that if she was going to be a strong warrior she had to push through her fears and move on.

The apprentice got sucked out of her thoughts by the voice of the other she-cat, she nodded and fallowed exactly as her mentor told and did. Her tail swayed behind her as she leaned downwards, "Okay, I'll try." Her skin flustered underneath her fur, she grew shy and afraid of doing it wrong but she lashed out her paw anyways.

"Like that?"

Tansyheart watched carefully, taking in every detail as her apprentice imitated her movements. The apprentice was clearly nervous, but overall executed the move correctly. "That was a good first try, Minkpaw," she mewed encouragingly. "Next time, try getting down a little bit lower and reaching up rather than down." She paused for a moment, thinking. "Let's move on. Do you see that twig on the log? That's going to be the scruff of the enemy. I'm going to leap onto the log, plant my paws where an enemy's shoulders would be, and grab the scruff in my teeth. Watch carefully." She jumped with ease onto the log, landing with her paws beside the small branch protruding from the bark. She grabbed it in her teeth, shaking it gently for a moment to demonstrate. Then she released it and rejoined her apprentice on the ground. "See? Not so hard. Your turn!"

Tansyheart used Leap-and-Hold on the Fallen Log, dealing 11 damage and costing 10 stamina. The Fallen Log is stunned for 1 turn.

ooc; Exactly, that's perfect. Now for stun moves, you have to roll the effect dice. You can do that by clicking the blue "post reply" button at the bottom of a thread, or by clicking preview. The dice option can be found under the post box once you do that, and you just select the effect dice. You have to check the battle system to see how long the number you roll stuns your opponent for each move. If you stun your opponent for one turn, you deal two turns of damage: the initial attack, and the one turn they are stunned. If you stun your opponent for two turns, you deal three turns of damage: the initial attack, and the two turns they are stunned. So, after you post as stunning your opponent, they will post either once or twice (depending on how long you stun them) without using the battle system. (Normally, you and your opponent would post multiple times before your opponent is released, but because the Fallen Log obviously can't post, Tansyheart is going to release it immediately.

Minkpaw was discouraged as she did it wrong, but she thought to herself that it was okay, because it was her first day training and she knew that she was going to get things wrong she just really didn't like being corrected. But her mentor seemed to be approving of her mistakes which made her feel better about it, "Okay, I'm sorry.." She didn't know why she was apologizing but she felt like it was right because she did something out of place. But, the feline turned her attention to her mentor. Her soft brown eyes observing as the feline continued to attack the fallen log.

Her tail swiveled behind her, she was feeling scared to do such a big move in front of some other cat like this but she leaped on top of the log and bit his teeth down onto the same twig that stuck out of the dead tree, shaking her head just like Tansyheart did.

It was noticeable that the apprentice wasn't good at this at all, she didn't feel at that comfortable about attacking other things and the thought of another cat trying to attack her made her nervous. She was too slow and bit down too gently onto the twig. She shifted awkwardly off the log, knowing that it wasn't her best. She was living in fear of doing it incorrectly, therefore it clouded her head to bad with the anxiety. She huffed out, not in annoyance but she felt like she was on the edge, "Can.. Can I try again.. that wasn't very good.."

ooc; if you don't know the hunting system: pick whatever prey you want to hunt from the hunting system here, keeping in mind the chances you have for each prey depending on your character's Clan, and then you select the hunting dice from the dice roll. i've always wanted a really stupid character that tries to hunt something that they have 0 chance of catching x)

Tansyheart could tell that the apprentice wasn't comfortable. Her first efforts at fighting hadn't been the best, but she had gotten the general idea right, and there was no reason that Minkpaw wouldn't become a capable warrior just like any other apprentice. However, clearly being firm with Minkpaw wasn't the best approach, as it might have been for her other apprentices. "Minkpaw, look at me," she mewed gently. She sad down next to the anxious she-cat. "You're doing just fine. Everyone makes mistakes. And fighting may not be your strong point, but so what? Not everyone is good at everything." She paused, gazing at Minkpaw. "There are so many different parts to being a warrior - fighting isn't everything. Besides, this is your first try. If you were amazing right away, I wouldn't be able to teach you!" she cracked a smile, hoping that the calico apprentice would too.

"Now, why don't we try hunting? Let's put battle training behind us for now, we'll come back to that another day." Tansyheart stood up, looking around. "Alright. Do you see that mouse over there? It's right next to that tree. I'm going to stalk it. This is a hunting crouch," she instructed, dropping low. She kept her tail well above the ground, but not high enough for the mouse to see. "Keep your tail high, but not too high, and stay low to the ground." She nodded to Minkpaw. "Now, I'm going to stalk it, and hopefully catch it."

She pounced, her paws missing her prey entirely. The rodent scurried away, and she didn't bother chasing it. "You see? Everyone makes mistakes. Now you try!" The dark tabby warrior sniffed the air. "See if you can find some prey to hunt."

Minkpaw's heartrate increased when the warrior said her name, scared that her mentor was frustrated with her, but to her surprise the older cat offered more care and comfort than portraying any negative emotions. She let off a gentle sigh as Tansyheart confronted her about maybe fighting was not her strong suit. "Thank you for understanding, it.. really means a lot." She squeaked out finally.

Her attention got focused on hunting now, the she-cat was happy that the part of the battle training was over. The younger feline was far more excited about taking prey home than thinking about attacking other things or cats. Minkpaw smiled gently when her mentor missed the rodent but she was somewhat glad that she did. Her ears perked upwards as she got told to find her own prey. Sooner or later she found a trail of a lizard. She pressed herself against the ground and lifted her tail, her haunches wiggled a few times before she made her pounce.

The lizard hurried off before she could make her pounce, her ears flicking upwards as a fox approached the area. Minkpaw wasn't careful about the way her fur was blowing in the breeze, knowing that the canine could smell her easily through the soft breeze. The apprentices eyes grew wide as she froze in her spot. Her first time hunting and first time battle training.

Tansyheart nodded slowly as she observed Minkpaw's movements. The apprentice moved stealthily, surprisingly well for a first attempt. She frowned as the apprentice froze and her prey scurried away. As the she-cat's ears pricked, she realized what was happening. The strong scent of fox hit her nose, and she shot forward to Minkpaw. Her apprentice was frozen on the spot, and the fox was advancing. "Minkpaw! Get back!" she cried. She scrambled past the calico apprentice, standing firmly between her and the fox. "You're going to be fine," she assured her, as much as she could in the moment of panic. Edging forward so she completely blocked Minkpaw from view, she reared up on her back legs and slashed wildly at the fox's face before coming down. "Minkpaw! You're going to have to attack now! I can't fight it all alone!" She called. She could only hope that the apprentice would come to her senses and at least try to attack the predator.

Tansyheart used Rear-up to Slash on the fox, dealing 13 damage and costing 15 stamina.

Minkpaw snapped out of it the moment her mentor ran past her and reared on the canine, the smaller female felt fear twist inside of her before she thought for a few seconds to run away but she couldn't just leave Tansyheart to get slaughtered by a fox. She started to panic and used the only attack that came to her clouded mind as she lashed out her paw and caught her claw on the fox's nose and it yelped.

Tansyheart nodded approvingly to Minkpaw. Her battle skills needed some work still, but this would do for now. She darted forward again and raised her powerful front paws to slash the fox's muzzle in rapid succession. She hissed and backed up to regain her balance.
