A New Day is Dawning (Closed)

Ever since she had finally admitted her fears to Nutfur, Finchstream had begun to feel a lot better.  She finally felt like she could move forward with her life, and stop being afraid of every single situation, and begin to face the problem head-on.  Of course, she still felt queasy at the sight of blood and tried to avoid it whenever possible, but for some reason...she was already starting to feel better about it.  Maybe just admitting that she had this fear to someone...had made the fear a bit easier to control.  She knew that it was always going to be there in the back of her mind, but she was feeling much more confident about her abilities as a warrior.  So, today she was doing one of the things she loved most; hunting for her clan.  "Does anyone want to go hunting with me?"  Her nervous stutter was beginning to fade, and her voice rang strongly around the camp.  Smiling, the fluffy silver tabby waited to see if anyone would answer her call.

The daughter of the deputy heard the question with interest and she approached the older warrior, nodding at her as a greeting. "I would like to go." She asked in a serious tone. She wasn't the friendly type of cat but that didn't mean she disliked her clanmates. The young she-cat looked after the warriors and elders all the time but she was simply not good with words.

Silverfang, on the other side, walked to Finchstream with a confident and proud look. "A little hunting would be great. Mind if I join you too?" The scarred warrior was far different from the shy and kind Finchstream but she didn't have reasons to hate her for that. She was simply another clanmate to be respected for the silvery she-cat.

Immediately, Darkpaw was up on her paws and trotting over. It hadn't been long since she had gained her warrior name and she was eager to get out. As she padded up to Silverfang, a low purr rumbled in her chest. It looked like she would be hunting with her mother today. She returned Finchstream's smile with an equally bright one. The sun that shone over their camp that day heated her fur. Her long coat was cleaned and shone to perfect, but she was more than willing to mess it up for the sake of heading out fishing.

"I'm ready!" She paused briefly to lick down a tuft of fur that stuck up on her chest, aggravated by the feeling for a moment before glancing back up, "I'm going to catch all the fish today." Darkpaw grinned up at her mother, eyes alight with excitement as he waited for some affirmation. Her paws pressed firmly against the slightly softened ground, trying to hold back her energy.

Finchstream nodded a return greeting to Hailpaw with a welcoming purr; "Sure you can!"  For a moment she was a bit worried about having the deputy's daughter along, given how protective Jaystream was of the kits, but she quickly shrugged off the doubt.  Next she turned to greet Silverfang with a smile and accepting nod; she didn't know the confident warrior super well, mostly because they were practically polar opposites, but she was in no way opposed to spending time with her.  If anything, she admired how the she-cat was able to charge into battle without hesitation to defend her clan.  Last but not least she turned to Darkpaw, who already seemed to have welcomed herself with a confident boast.  With an amused purr, the fluffy tabby warrior meowed; "I'm sure you will, but maybe try to leave some for us too."  With a faint laugh, she flicked her tail and purred; "Let's go!"

Leading the way out of camp, Finchstream padded at the head of the patrol, something she was not used to at all.  Despite that, she tried to hold her head high and walk confidently, as if she wasn't dying to fall back and follow Silverfang instead.  She wasn't a leader, but she supposed she would try her best, at least for one patrol.  Making their way down towards the river, they came to a spot where the ice was finally starting to melt, leaving a space for them to crouch on the bank and fish as they normally would.  With an assuring nod, she purred; "Okay, let's fish!  Crouching down on the edge of the water, she watched the surface intently for any shiny ripple of scales beneath the surface.

Hailpaw watched at the other apprentice arrive. She knew her just from sight and the only thing she knew about her was that she was older and she was Silverfang's adoptive daughter. The apprentice didn't care about her arrogance and just followed Finshstream quietly to the outsides of the camp.

Once they reached the river, a small smile appeared on her muzzle. Not wasting a second, the calico she-cat entered the cold water and got a bit deeper just to wait for the most careless fishes to come near to her. Otterleap already taught her how to fish so she was confident about that skill. When the silver flash appeared, Hailpaw hit the water with a splash the fish was tossed to the riverbank. Quickly, the apprentice ran after it and killed it with her fangs.

"I'm sure you will, my dear." She purred giving an affectionate lick to her daughter. Although Darkpaw wasn't her biological daughter, she loved her as much as she loved Spotfur or Petalpaw. That's why she walked with her all the way to their hunting destination.

Standing in front of the water, the more experienced warrior wanted to give a demonstration to her daughter. Leaping on a rock, Silverfang looked down at the water and swiftly, she dipped her head into the water and caught a plump fish with her jaws.

She loved the older warriors of her clan and purred at their support while she padded alongside them. The split-faced calico followed dutifully after the older cats, sticking rather close to Silverfang. Part of her longed to make small talk along the way, but she was so caught up in taking in her surroundings that it was quickly forgotten. Soon the soft rushing of the river caused her ears to twitch. It was much harder to hear now underneath the now-thawing sheet of ice that covered it. Even so, the sound stirred something in her that could only be attributed to her Riverclan heritage. Her heart thudded faster than it had moments earlier. Instead of watching her clanmates fish, she was fixated on taking in every aspect of the water.

Out of the corner of her eye, she caught Hailpaw working through the logistics of fishing. Without looking up or away from the magnificent flow of water before her, she absentmindedly meowed, "Good catch!"

When she finally tore her amber gaze away from the rushing currents, Darkpaw found herself watching Silverfang. Oh, how elegantly and practiced was the way her mother caught the fish. It was inspiring. Within the moment, she was hastily padding over to the bank. A break in the melting ice provided the perfect spot for her to try her luck at fishing. Trying hard to remember what she had learned so far, and attempting to recall Silverfang's action. Shapes twisted and changed beneath the surface of the water. Everything looked so different through the medium. Focus. Focus. Look at the shadows, she reminded herself silently. After a moment, a dark shape indicating the presence of a fish came into her view, and without hesitation, Darkpaw shot out a black forepaw. Her claw caught the skin of the fish just enough to hook it and toss it onto the riverbank. Not wanting to soil her first catch, she whipped around and pinned it between two paws before giving it a finishing bite.

It only took a moment for the tempting glimmer of shining scales reflected out of the cold, musky water, and Finchstream's muscles instantly tensed with anticipation.  Come on...just a little closer now...that's it...NOW!  Her eyes narrowing to slits, the small warrior flashed out a tufted paw down into the river, and hooked the fish on the tips of her sharpened claws.  Flinging the wriggling creature up out of it's home, it flew in a high arc before landing hard on the muddy ground, stunned.  Dashing forward, Finchstream finished it off with a swift chomp to the spine, before quickly shoving her catch behind her and bending down to wash the taste of fresh blood out of her mouth.  For once, her heart was not racing frantically, and her stomach wasn't trying to heave up it's contents...she was fine!  If she had been alone she would've let out a gleeful yowl, but instead she allowed a broad grin to surface on her face as she looked around at her clanmates, who had all caught their own prey as well.  "Great job guys!"

Her green eyes glanced surprised at the other apprentice but she soon turned her gaze away, bashfully. "Thank you... you did a good job too, Darkpaw." Hailpaw mewed softly. She had no friends rather than her own brothers and sisters so it was weird to be praised by a denmate.

She tried to focus once again on the water and once the shadow appeared, the apprentice tried to imitate Silverfang's technique, putting her head into the water and trying to catch the fish with only her jaws. Luckily, the calico she-cat actually did it and she smiled brightly when she took her head out with the slippery fish trashing on her mouth until its life slipped away.

Silverfang smiled proudly when her daughter caught the fish and nodded at Finchstream when she complimented all of them. However, she had no time to waste with words. Instead, the she-cat fixed her eyes on the water and once again, she waited for a silver flash to appear. But a larger shadow distracted her from her job.

A raccoon that was trying to catch fishes caught the scent of all the fresh-kill that the four RiverClanners had caught. But its dark eyes fixed on a young she-cat that was biting the fish she just caught. The grey and black animal approached it with a snarl and tried to pick the aquatic animal from Darkpaw. But Silverfang already was rushing toward the predator. With a hiss, she leapt toward it and tackled it away from the apprentice. But the animal still managed to take away from the apprentice the fish she caught and it was ready to fight for it. Growling, the predator attacked the silvery she-cat with a quick claw crossing through its chest. The warrior stepped back hissing but ready to fight again.

Silverfang used Run-and Tackle, dealing 13 damage and costing 10 stamina.
Raccoon used Quick Swipe, dealing 20 damage and costing 10 stamina.

For a moment, she was basking in the praise of a good catch. A purr rumbled in her chest and she closed her eyes to feel the warmth of the sun and the moment. As they slowly opened, they quickly widened as she saw a creature she had never seen before lunge for her prey. However, before it could quite grab it, he mother was on the case and tackling the creature. One little black paw with unsheathed claws darted forwards to swipe the creature on the nose. Her fur bristled and raised in aggravation with the raccoon ruining their perfect hunting patrol, "Get your own prey, beast!" Darkpaw snapped indignantly as she faced it with blazing eyes.

There was no way she would allow it to get away with trying to steal from Riverclan. The calico she-cat tried to keep a close distance to the scuffle that ensued between her mother and the other animal. At every chance she got, she struck attempting to fight in a similar technique to her fishing. Hooked claws and swiping at the raccoon was all she knew how to do. Battle training hadn't happened quite yet, even though she was on her way to becoming a rather prolific fisher, as had just been proving. Once more, she booped the black nose and let out a low hiss, "That'll teach you not to mess with Riverclan!"

Darkpaw used front paw strike, dealing 6 damage and using 10 stamina.
