The Best That We Can Be [Training]

Emberheart wondered, not for the first time, how the world had come crashing down around her in only a few days. The failed rescue mission and the loss of her first apprentice, followed so closely by everything with Flickerpaw and the revelation that her former mentor was apparently a murderer, which was followed by Specklefang's death. She was still struggling to process all of it.

But here she was, with the responsibility of Specklefang's most recent apprentice passed to her - the very apprentice she had shouted at when RiverClan invaded their camp. Despite what her Clanmates often said about her due to her heritage, Emberheart was not weak. She would not falter today. Instead, she stopped in front of the apprentice's den to gather her courage before entering and gently prodding Scarletpaw awake. "Scarletpaw, training."

Scarletpaw slowly opened her eyes, noticing the blurry shape of Emberheart, the same warrior that had shouted at her when RiverClan invaded their camp, killed Specklefang, and took away Flickerpaw. What was she doing here? Then her memories came back to her again. She was Scarletpaw's new mentor. Groggily blinking her eyes, Scarletpaw frantically clawed out of her nest. "What are we going to do today?" She mewed grumpily.

"That depends on what Specklefang covered," Emberheart replied, her voice faltering at her former mentor's name despite her attempts to avoid exactly that. "Which you can tell me while you grab something from the fresh-kill pile, and then we'll head out to do what we need to. Have you had any battle training yet?" Though Scarletpaw's grumpiness was not lost on her, she was hoping it would clear up as the day went on.

Scarletpaw's ears burned in embarrassment. She had not learned anything yet. However she would give a decent reason. "welllll, I haven't learned anything yet, but that's because of what happened soon after I became an apprentice." The last couple of words were just a soft mutter. She didn't want to be reminded of it, but she didn't want to look like some mouse brained cat that had been an apprentice for more than five days already and not learned anything. She quickly crept to the fresh-kill pile and picked a scrawny mice for herself.

Emberheart nodded and waited for Scarletpaw to finish eating. "Battle training first, then. If recent events are any indication, everyone should be able to defend themselves. Follow me," she told her apprentice, and headed out of the camp towards a clearing. When they arrived, she went directly into explaining what they were going to do. "We're going to try a demonstration, alright? I'm going to attack this bush," she gestured to the bush in question with her tail before striking at the bush with her paw. "And now you try."

OOC: These three topics are your friend in battles: the rules for obvious reasons, the rank system for rank stats (as an apprentice Scarlet has 20 HP and 80 SP), and battle system which lists moves, what rank you can first use them, and how much damage you do at a particular rank (like how Front Paw Strike does 9 damage for Ember, but Scarlet should do 6 damage with that same move). If there's anything that's still confusing, let me know and I'll try to explain, since this is my first time teaching these!

"That's it!" Emberheart encouraged. "But that's only going to help you so much. What's going to be most important in a real fight is strategy. Anticipate what your opponent is going to do, and counter it. One thing you can do is grab their tail and bite down on it, which will probably get them to pause for a moment and could give you much-needed time to attack," she explained. "Or you can pin them down, like this." The warrior moved back a little, and leapt onto the bush.

OOC: Leap-and-Hold does damage on the first turn, then the opponent has to post for their pinned turn, then you deal Leap-and-Hold damage again, and it repeats once more if you roll 4-6 on the effect dice. Does that make sense? If you roll a 4, 5 or 6 you'd deal three instances of damage, but only two instances if you roll 1, 2, or 3. Also, you can't use another move while using it, but I think that's written on the battle pages somewhere.

"You're doing really well," Emberheart declared cheerfully. "I think we can move on to my preferred method of fighting. Use your surroundings! For instance, see that tree?" In order to demonstrate her statement, Emberheart scrambled part of the way up the nearest tree before springing off and onto the bush.

Scarletpaw was feeling nervous about this one. She wasn't sure if she could copy what Emberheart had done, and didn't want to fall flat on her face and look stupid. She quickly scrambled quite clumsily up the tree and jumped off. Fortunately her paws struck their target, the bush.

Emberheart watched with anticipation, and burst into an excited cheer when Scarletpaw succeeded. "You did it!" The pride in her voice was clear, because though Scarletpaw had only just become her apprentice she was her apprentice now. "Skill with climbing will come with time and practice, but being able to get the basics so quickly is better than I was as an apprentice."
