A Clamor on Patrol (Open Hunting Patrol)

Oh boy, oh boy, ohboyohboyohboy! She was an apprentice now! Rookpaw opened her eyes and leaped out of the apprentices' den where she had spent her first night away from her parents. She raced into the clearing, plowing through piles of snow and looked around for signs of life. Wake up, WindClan! Rookpaw was here and ready to serve!... Of course, she could not serve without others to go with. She was social and needed cats to talk with while she hunted.

Silentstrike stretched, ready to begin the day with a hunting patrol. As his eyes wandered around camp, he thought of how Rookpaw might be doing. Just as the thought popped into his head, he saw his adoptive daughter standing nearby the entrance to camp. "She must be waiting for a warrior.' He padded towards her, large paws leaving indentions in the snow. "Rookki-Rookpaw, have you eaten breakfast yet? It's kind of hard to hunt on an empty stomach." A warm smile settled on his face as he looked down on the eager apprentice, maybe a little too eager. He hadn't eaten yet himself, but he had eaten a whole rabbit the day before, so he could definitely wait.

Wolfpaw was knocked out of his nest by Rookpaw rushing out. "Hey!" He yelled. He put his nest upright and marched out of the den, cautious of other sleeping cats. He walked over to Rookpaw and Silentstrike. "Rookpaw, be more careful! You knocked me out of my nest and probably woke up half the camp! And if you're going on patrol, you're taking ME."

"Do I hear patrol?" Bramblepaw asked, when he padded out of apprentice's den. He had awaken because one apprentice stepped on his tail. It wasn't really nice waking technique, but he was happy that he had caught morning patrol. "May I join?" He asked to sound more polite, after all he was apprentice for not a long time, but he had done a few training with his mentor, Swiftstep. Quickly he came closer and waited for the answer.

Rookpaw grinned brightly up at Silentstrike. Her face blanked a little when she realized she had forgotten breakfast. "Oh! You're right! We should probably fill up. Running takes a lot of energy," she nodded seriously. Then Wolfpaw stomped on over, fur ruffled by her bombastic exit from their shared den. "Sorry! Just a little excited. Happy to have you!"

Turning to Bramblepaw, she said, "Of course! The more paws out there, the more rabbits here."

Jaypaw was woken by all the noise within and around the apprentice den, so he decided to check it out. "Hey, what is going on?" He looked around at all the cats. The grey tom sat on his haunches and flicked his tail from side to side waiting for an answer.

"A hunting patrol! Want to come?" Rookpaw replied with a trill of exuberance.

With that answer the young tom's mood lighten a little bit. "Sure!" He stood on all fours, but waited for someone to take the lead. Jaypaw was not one to think himself a leader, especially as a newly appointed apprentice, but he thought maybe eventually he could be a warrior who the apprentices would want to hunt with, and learn from. "So...where are we going?"

Wolfpaw sat down and licked his pelt, ignoring Jaypaw and Bramblepaw. Wherever they went was fine.

Silentstrike smiled. There were a lot of apprentices before him, but he could handle it if it would be just a patrol. "You can go ahead and eat if you want. I'll be okay until later." He nodded to all of the approaching apprentices, white fur tamed down. He sat down closer to the camp exit, waiting for the apprentices to do what they would so they could finally start.

"Out into the territory!" she said, "But first, we need to gather our strength." Then she bent down and pulled the rabbit over to the apprentices so they all could share it. Afterwards, she began to bound out of camp, hardly waiting for anyone else.

Once on the moor, her eyes expanded to an impossible size. It was so big! She immediately opened up her mouth so she could bathe it in the scents surrounding her. Her heart hoped for a rabbit or something interesting. Then it hit her-- a rabbit! Though not graceful, she fumbled after the smell of one and gave chase. It was fast, but she found a good pace, putting on speed so she could pounce. This was so exciting! The heart inside of her threatened to burst out of her chest with joy. It only swelled further when she finally slammed her paws down on the rabbit. There was a bit of hesitation on the killing bite when it fidgeted and whined, but she managed it, nonetheless.

Bramblepaw stalked prey some fox-lenghts away from other cats. There were a few rabbits and hares, something usual for WindClan, altough it was rarer in the leafbare as expected. He was slowly pushing his way through mud and tall grass, without taking care of anything else but hunting. Finally he fixed on the fat hare some fox-lenghts further the way. He stopped for a moment and then continued with fast, but very quiet steps. When he decided that it was the proper time, tom leaped from the ground and landed on the hare with his paws outstreched. Catch!

Wolfpaw scanned the moor for a trace of prey and spotted brown movement a little ways up the hill. He quietly stalked away from the group. He was going to catch it this time! The wind was not blowing very hard, and there wasn't much scent of anything. Still, that would make his catch even more impressive. He came reasonably close, and, pouncing as well as he could, landed on a small stone. He yelped and pulled his paw away. It was bleeding, but nothing major, at least that's what it looked like. He decided to keep going. The brown wasn't far away yet. Odd. He bounded back downhill, abandoning all tries for stealth, trying to catch it with all of his heart, might, mind, and strength. But yet again, he failed. He was running too fast, tripping over his own paws. He hurtled past the brown thing, going too fast to catch himself. He tried to stop when he saw the bush, but he couldn't slow down in time. He realized as he was running that the brown thing was a leaf. His ears flushed red, but he wasn't done yet. The branches of the bush were only just strong enough to stop him, sending him facefirst into the ground behind the bush, hind legs still caught in it. He was so ashamed that he had tried so hard, only to be hunting- and missing- a leaf.
