Wolfpaw's Assessment [closed]

The grey sky was bleak and void of any warmth, despite how the afternoon sun hung heavily in the late day sky. Hard clumps of leftover snow still clung to the barren reed's of RiverClan's territory, throwing dazzling reflections whenever the weak sunlight fell upon it. The weather of the day was less than promising, but Splashwillow's hopes were still high as ever. After conferring with Ivystar several evenings earlier, it had been decided that her final apprentice, Wolfpaw, was ready for one of the final stages of his his training- his assessment. She knew that her adoptive son was more than ready to take on the task at paw, but she couldn't help but worry for him. Especially considering how difficult hunting during Leafbare could be.

Shaking out her fur in an attempt to chase away the bitter chill that wreathed around her, Splashwillow settled beneath the brittle and drooping reeds that formed the protective barrier around RiverClan's camp, content to find meager shelter away from the cold. Wrapping her tail tightly around her shivering form, bright gaze eagerly awaiting Wolfpaw's appearance.

Wolfpaw who had been in the apprentice den for awhile, chating with other apprentices, got up and walked out from the den. He saw his adoptive mother and padded up to her "Hi mother!" he meowed with a smile "When am I gonna do my hunting assessment?" he then asked and lashed his tail back and forth in excitement.
He sat down infront of her waiting for a answer.

A soft purr slipped from Splashwillow's mouth as she listened to Wolfpaw speak, her amber gaze glowing with a fondness as nuzzled him briefly in greeting. Pulling away and stiffly rising to her paws, the calico she-cat shook herself fiercely to spark some warmth back into her body before finally speaking. "We're going to do it today- while the weather is still nice enough for us to do so." She mewed, nodding towards the entrance in the woven reed wall. Slipping through the camp's entrance, the Warrior did her best to ignore how brisk the chill of the day was now that they were outside of the safety of the camp.

"Yes!" he meowed and quickly followed Splashwillow. It was a little cold but thank Starclan he had alot of fur so he didn't freeze that much. He sniffed around trying to catch the sent of some prey to catch later.

A small sheltered clearing was visible several tail-lengths ahead of the duo, and so Splashwillow hurried towards the little alcove with a briskness evident in her quick steps. Screwing up her face against a soft, chilly breeze, the calico Warrior eagerly ducked into the shelter of the Leafbare-barren reeds before turning to face Wolfpaw, who had remained close on her heels during their little trip. "We've gone over the rules of hunting assessments before, but I'm going to give you a little refresher regardless. As you know, apprentices have until sundown to complete their assessment- but they must stay within the territory during so. While I myself will not assist you during this assessment unless absolutely necessary, I will be following you and observing your progress throughout the procession. To complete this assessment, you must catch three pieces of prey of your choosing- but don't be afraid to branch out of your comfort zone whenever hunting." Splashwillow mewed softly, her gaze reassuring as she relayed the instructions to her adoptive son.

"You may begin whenever you're ready, but remember I'll be watching you throughout your assessment. Good luck, Wolfpaw!" The calico finished, her whiskers twitching eagerly as she spoke, before rising to her paws and slipping out of view of the young tom.

He nodded when she was done "I'll try my best to catch atleast 3 pieces of prey but if I have time left I'll get even more!" he meowed then he turned around and started sniffing around until he caught the scent of a frog.
He got into a hunting crouch and started stalking towards it. When he where close enough he pounced on it.

But with it's help of it's slimy body it manage to escape and run away into the bushes. He sighed and walked deeper into the territory.

Splashwillow drifted silently several tail-lengths behind Wolfpaw, well out of sight and strategically positioned so that he had no clue she was actually so close to his whereabouts. Slipping beneath a clump of half-wilted undergrowth, the calico Warrior watched with intent eyes as the young tom began to stalk what appeared to be a frog, her ears swiveling forwards as he continued to carefully purse the slippery amphibious creature. Her breath stalled in her chest as she watched Wolfpaw lunge, but a soft sigh was soon slipping through her mouth as she watched the frog scuttle away.

Waiting for Wolfpaw to pad away once more, Splashwillow silently followed behind after several heartbeats, hoping that StarClan would be more kind with his next attempt.

He saw the river and thought about cracking some ice and fish a little because it was easier but then he thought about what Splashwillow had said and he decided to wait with fishing. He walked a bit closer to the river anyways and saw a water vole on the other side of the river. He watched it turn away and start to walk away from the river. He got into a crouch. He creept after it with light and swift steps. When he got to the vole it had stopped.

Before he could pounce on it he gave away his position and it ran away. "This is not a good day to hunt" he wisperd.

A soft, seething breath of disappointment rattled through Splashwillow's mouth as she watched Wolfpaw lose another catch once more, her amber eyes unreadable. The calico Warrior remained poised several tail-lengths from the younger tom, her shoulders lightly twitching beneath her fur. Despite the faint tremor of worry within her, she still remained quite optimistic- she herself had struggled greatly during her own assessment, so it was that unusual to lose several potential catches.

Quietly rising to her paws once more, Splashwillow patiently stalked after Wolfpaw once more, her ears swiveled forwards in a hopeful manner.

He turned back to the river, he sat down on the river bank and unsheated his claws once again. Then he started to swipe on the ice until some of iet broke "A fish or two can't be to hard to catch" he growled.
He waited for awhile until he saw a fish. He quickly dipped his paw in the water and dug is claws into the fishs shinning skin.

He got it out of the water and grabbed it with his mouth and snapped it's neck.

The half-dead reeds that Splashwillow took refuge beneath rattled softly, but the chattering of the partially frozen river easily drown out the slight disturbance. Crouching down against the thin grass that decorated the river bank, the calico watched with interested eyes as Wolfpaw began his hunt for the fish that lurked below the surface of the water. The calico Warrior's nose twitched with delight as Wolfpaw finally managed to wrangle up a fish and swiftly kill it.

Wolfpaw decided to wait a little and see if he could catch another fish.
After sitting and staring into the water for awhile without any succes he got up and grabbed the fish, he walked over to a patch of reeds and put down the fish then he cover it with snow.
He looked around and sniffed a little, he caught a vague scent of Splashwillow but ingnored it as he caught the scent pigeon and followed the scent swiftly. He stopped about a fox-leap away from the pigeon. He waited a little and then he pounced on it.

When the pigeon felt Wolfpaws claws brushing against it's feathers it quickly flew away before he could digs is paws into the bird. He sits down and sighes "I can't hunt land prey.. How will I ever be a good warrior if I can't even hunt land prey?".
