Muddy waters hide treasures [Closed]

At the edge of the Deep Marshes, Violetshine stood in the wet earth, her pelt colouring brown as she waited patiently without a single moment. With the cover of night, she was almost impossible to spot, only the faint scent of ShadowClan gave her away. If she wanted to hide that, she would have rolled in the mud, but she now had an apprentice to train. It would do no good to be impossible for him to find, so she waited with her scent flowing in the breeze.

Scorchpaw held his head and tail up high as he padded confidently along the softened ground. He wanted to make a good first impression on his first outing with his new mentor.

Ugh. Of course Magpiestar had to choose Violetshine to be his mentor. Sure, she was a ShadowClan cat -- the best Clan to be born into, obviously -- but that was about it. He didn't know much about her, but he did know that she was a she-cat. That was all he needed to know that she was just as soft and emotional a cat as any other cat that wasn't a tom.

However, he felt happy and excited today, so he decided not to mention any of his thoughts about Violetshine to her. Who knows? Maybe she'll be adequate in training him to become the best warrior he could possibly be. ...Yeah, maybe not, but he had to think of something to make this outing with her a little more bearable.

Scorchpaw stood before his mentor, his bright orange eyes glowing in the moonlight like amber orbs. "I'm ready to begin my training," he meowed formally.

"Hm." Violetshine dipped her head in acknowledgement of his presence, but said nothing more. Logically, she knew that she should be a little more vocal, warm and inviting like Firestone was to his apprentices, but being inviting and friendly wasn't really in her nature. Rather than waste words on pleasantry, she focused on what she was best at, her skills as a warrior.

Being half the size of most warriors, she wasn't the strongest, but she was quick and silent. Which was what she would be teaching Scorchpaw. How to move through the land like a wraith, slipping past the enemy unnoticed until it was too late for them to react.

With a flick of her tail, she called for her apprentice to follow. "Keep up, and be quiet. That is your lesson today."

For a second, it looked as though she was jumping into the bog to drown. The thick viscous liquid often trapped prey in it's sticky pits, but their was a hidden secret to the Deep Marshes. Hidden beneath the surface, there were a few rocks and roots that provided footholds. That was what she'd teach him today, along with being silent in his movements.

She landed on a hidden platform quietly, barely causing a splash before she leapt to the next. After the third jump, she waited, watching. It was time for Scorchpaw to follow.

Scorchpaw rolled his eyes. Violetshine was treating him like a kit who had never been out of the nursery before. Apparently she had no idea he had already been here once before as a kit. He even caught a frog to prove it!

Holding his tongue, the young black tabby leaped into the suffocating sludge, finding he had landed on a root underneath the ravenous mud threatening to suck him in. He pushed his way through, placing his paws gingerly and carefully with each leap. However, he wasn't exactly graceful when he moved through the mud, each jump causing powerful splashes that rippled out, gently causing reeds, caught branches, and other objects in the marshes to sway.

Violetshine frowned at the noise her apprentice made, the sounds echoed throughout the wide open marshes, sending frogs and waterbirds alike scurrying away from the noise. It was... unpleasant. She had to teach him to be a quiet, but how? She didn't really know how to be quiet, she just was quiet. She was silent, forgettable, tiny. Scorchpaw was none of these things, his mere presence was loud with his confidence.

"Stop." She meowed, pondering their next step. He was the right colouring to be stealthy, but just wasn't. "Our advantage is our knowledge of how to move silently through this land. No other cat can match us here, we know where to step, how to step. You are simply following, not learning. Move smartly, quietly."

The bicolour she-cat leapt a few more footholds ahead, then waited to see if he got her.

Scorchpaw growled lowly with irritation as her mentor spoke to him as if he were a stupid little kit. He'd show her. He would be even stealthier than her. He slipped to the next root underneath the surface of the muddy water, this time pushing himself forward instead of upward, gently sloshing through and making only a little noise this time. Once he regained balance, he shot her a look that seemed to dare her to criticize him again.

"Better. But you are still not watching. Watch where I step. One misstep will cost you prey." Violetshine meowed again, a little more sternly now as she was getting a bit annoyed. She scented prey in the distance, and she disliked missed opportunities more than anything else. Quietly leaping from place to place, she dropped into a crouch when she spotted a frog nearby.

She successfully pinned the frog in a leap, severing it's spine in one quick bite.

"If I had made noise, the frog would have run away. You must be quiet. Now, try again."

Scorchpaw wasn't able to hold back a hiss. His mentor was really starting to get on his nerves! Did she have no idea he once caught a frog before he was even apprenticed? How dare she treat him like a senseless kit!

Scorchpaw was quick to find another frog nearby, and he began gently pushing his way through the mud towards it, biting his tongue to hold back the growl that rose in his throat. Perhaps if he caught something he would be able to show her he wasn't a stupid kit.

Scorchpaw pounced at it through the mud and gnashed his teeth into its spine before it could flee, its high-pitched squeal cut short. He glared at Violetshine, holding the prey in his mouth and holding his head high, as if indignantly showing off his skills.
