Hunting Patrol Time

Jaystream left his den early like he always did and waited until his apprentice come to him. Then, he told Vixenpaw that she should eat something before they were leaving while he stayed there, thinking. The deputy waited in the center of the clearing, seeing how slowly some warriors and apprentice woke up with the dawn appearing on the horizon. He wrapped his tail around his paws, nervously. He was going to organize a patrol as a deputy for his clan for the first time of his life... and he was insecure about what was going to happen. What if no one wanted to join him because they didn't trust him as the future leader? The gray tabby tom shook those thoughts of his head and took a deep breath. This is not the time to panic... Ivyfall made me her deputy, right? I have to do this.. there's no place for hesitations of doubts" He said to himself, finding the courage to stand up and raise his head, more confident but still scared. "I-I'm going to organize a dawn hunting patrol. Any warrior that is willing to accompany us please come and talk to me at the entrance of the camp." He said loud enough so the cats in the camp could hear him clearly. With his tail kinked to his back, the tom told Vixenpaw with that sign to follow him to the place where he said they were going to meet. He sat down and waited for any clanmate to join him and his apprentice.

Vixenpaw rose unsteadily to her feet and slowly walked out of the apprentices' den. Seeing her mentor, she walked over to him and purred in greeting. At his instruction, she went to the fresh-kill pile and picked out a mouse. She was extremely nervous as to what this patrol would entail and didn't have much of an appetite, but she forced the mouse down.

She heard Jaystream adress the Clan and saw him beckon with his tail. Getting up from her place near the fresh-kill pile, she followed the tall grey tom nervously.

Batfang’s ears perked by the calling of the deputy. Taking a moment to think about it, the charcoal tom approached the gray tabby tom and the young apprentice. A hunting patrol would help him to distract his thoughts from Mapleshade for a little bit and just focus on his clan. ”Morning, Jaystream. Can I go with you?” He said sitting. Despite his young age, Batfang strangely trusted in the new deputy without many doubts or critics. He was loyal, good and strong enough for the rank. Ivyfall did a good choice choosing him.

The tom nodded to the newcomer, glad to see that at least one of his clanmates wanted to follow his lead. "Of course, Batfang. You're always welcome. I don't know if you met before but she is Vixenpaw, my apprentice. She's also coming with us for her training." He said proudly as he looked back at the ginger she-cat with a smile. It's been a while since he had his last apprentice and he enjoyed the idea of having one. The warrior always looked after them as they were his own kits even if he wasn't a father yet. Every time he saw an apprentice he remembered his old lonely life or Cinderpaw... he really wanted to make sure that they didn't have to suffer like them so that's why Jaystream worked so hard giving them the confidence and knowledge they needed to grow and be good and happy warriors. That was what he wanted for Vixenpaw...

Lakepaw rose to his paws the moment he heard Jaystream’s announcement. He needed to get out of camp before Snailbelly assigned him more boring apprentice duties. Smiling as he noticed his sister making her way over as well, he dipped his head in greeting to the young deputy. “Mind if I come?” he asked, not exactly waiting for an answer before turning to his sister. “Hey, Vixenpaw! How’s training so far?” He asked inquisitively, his amber gaze bright.

Vixenpaw looked up at her larger brother and smiled softly. "H-hi Lakepaw," she meowed quietly, "My training's going really well, Jaystream's an amazing mentor." she said, looking up at the tall grey deputy.

The tall gray tabby tom smiled happily when he saw Lakepaw approaching. Standing up, the tom turned his head to the exit of the camp, more confident. "Good morning, Lakepaw. I'm glad you're here too. I believe we're ready to go then." He said guiding the patrol into the reeds of his territory.

After some time walking, the tom stopped his steps when he reached a large clearing next to the river. The deputy looked back at the patrol with his tail held up. "I think we're good here. You're free to go and hunt whenever you like but please stay near this place so we can meet later." The cat nodded to the group like he was saying that they had the permission to go now and then approached the calm water of the river. He leaped toward a rock and then jumped again to another one, choosing that spot for his fishing. Crouching down, the tom waited over there until the common silver flash was in his range of reach. With a quick move, the tom tossed the fish out of the water and caught it with its jaws when it felt on the rock, killing it fastly.

Vixenpaw trotted over to a large rock, from behind which she surveyed the area. A small shift in the grass alerted her senses and she instinctually dropped to her belly. Crouching, she slowly crawled to where she sensed the shift. Mouse, she could smell it now. She hadn't learnt this with Jaystream yet, but decided it wasn't too different from 'hunting' feathers and moss balls in the nursery. Then a small brown patch of fur appeared through the long grass. Narrowing her eyes, she crouched even lower, bunching up her muscles. Then she stretched her muscles, propelling her onto the small brown shape. The small apprentice unsheathed her claws, preparing to strike the tiny brown creature. At that moment, a crow flew by above her, distracting her for long enough for the mouse to escape. Looking down at her paws, Vixenpaw realised that the mouse had run away. "Aw, drat." she sighed, looking around for more prey.

The young warrior followed his deputy quietly, enjoying the peace of the territory. When they finally arrived, he nodded to his words and then walked away a few steps to start his hunting. For now, he wanted something different from fishes and he son found what he wanted when his eyes caught the movement of a toad hiding in the reeds. Crouching, the tom approached his objective and the jumped toward it with his claws ready to kill. However, just like Vixenpaw, he failed to reach the slimy body of the animal who escaped before he could reach it. Batfang growled annoyed but tried to not let his feelings control his actions. Sometimes you win and other you just lose but he was sure he would catch something no matter what.

Looking around for easier prey, Vixenpaw turned to the river. She pushed through the reeds and unsheathed her claws, preparing to grab a fish. Once she saw a shimmering silver shape beneath the surface, she reached out and plucked the fish from the water. Throwing it into the air, she grabbed it in her jaws and dropped it by the shore, deciding she would keep her prey in a pile.

Jaystream returned to the rock after leaving the fish he caught on the ground and smiled when he saw how her apprentice also caught something. However, his attention got distracted by a strange smell. Leaping back to the shore, the Riverclan noticed the presence of a bushy tail behind a rock. A squirrel! Feeling lucky for finding one on Riverclan territory, he crouched down keeping his tail up and waited until he was ready to jump. With a strong leap over the stone, his claws crashed the back of the squirrel that wasn't unable to escape. The tom ended its life with a quick bite on the scruff and walked back happily with the squirrel inside his mouth.
