Splashpaw's Assessment [Closed]

Amberpelt sat in the middle of the RiverClan camp, giving herself some prideful licks as she straighten down a small tuff of chest fur that was refusing to lay flat. Her tail was curled around her paws as she waited for Splashpaw, letting her eyes can the camp in the meantime. Amberpelt took great pride in being able to aid any of her Clanmates in any way she could - training, patrols...Assessments if need be. Simple tasks in the present but would mean much more in the future. Her Clan above all else of course, giving up what time she had for the good of it all was no hair off of her back. But...Perhaps some of the glee she took from it was the way that the young apprentices would look up to her - make her feel special. After all, like most RiverClan cats, she was something to be marveled.

Splashpaw slipped from the Apprentices den and gave herself a quick double take, making sure that her fur showed signs of the meticulous grooming it had just endured, before hurrying towards Amberpelt. Her chest still felt heavy from the losses of both Sparkwillow and Snowpaw, but the prospect of finally becoming a Warrior drew her attention away from the stinging wounds. If Otterleap ever came back he would be so proud to see his daughter finally a Warrior. "Hi Amberpelt!" Splashpaw chirped, unable to hide the excitement in her voice. "Can we start now?"

Amberpelt eyes glimmered as she saw the lucky apprentice step from the den, getting to her paws as she stretched out in a luxurious manner before flashing her a warm glance. "Hello Splashpaw," she greeted with a faint dip of her head, her motherly heart warming to see the apprentice in such high moods despite all that she had suffered lately. She chuckled lightly as she turned, flickering her tail in a motion to follow as she led the apprentice from the camp and into the territory. "We will start soon, once we get to the river I'll explain the rules and then we can start."

"Alright." Splashpaw nodded in agreement, feeling a bit apprehensive now that the Assessment was actually starting. The she-cat eagerly headed after Amberpelt, hurriedly running through everything Fallowstripe had taught her during the duration of her Apprenticeship, doing the best she could to fully gage whether or not she could pass.

The rest of the journey was made in more or less complete silence until the river came into view and the warrior halted. Amberpelt turned to look at the apprentice, smiling at her with complete faith that she would do perfectly. "The rules of the assessment is simple - you have until sundown to catch four pieces of pieces of prey. During this assessment, I will be watching your progress and judging how well you do on your hunting." There was a small pause as the warrior gave a thoughtful look, trying to think of what pieces of prey she wanted Splashpaw to get. "For your assessment, I want you to catch two fish and two land prey - any will do - to show that you can also hunt on land if the need ever arises." The warrior paused to let that all sink in as she raised her gaze, taking in the position of the sun before she gave a small nod of her head with a swish of her tail. "Start." With that, she brushed past Splashpaw and into the reeds - only going so far before she stopped and turned, ready to watch Splashpaw's attempt at her assessment.

After listening intently to Amberpelt's words, Splashpaw scrambled alway from the Warrior and down towards the riverbank, practically tripping over her own paws in her nervous anticipation. Exhaling quietly, she forced herself to take several deep breaths to slow her thudding heart before sitting down close to the water, her tail twitching in a mixture of anxiety and excitement.

After a few moments of tense waiting, a flash of silver caught her gaze and her paw quickly flashed out to swipe at the unsuspecting fish. Splashpaw felt every hair on her body quiver with excitement as she quickly scooped up the fish before flinging it to the riverbank, a triumphant squeak escaping her mouth as she quickly killed the creature. She lifted her head briefly to hopefully scan for Amberpelt before returning her gaze to the river. One fish closer to becoming a Warrior!

Amberpelt crouched in the shadows of the reeds, her green eyes barely noticeable between the gaps as she stared at her apprentice. She wasn't surprised that Splashpaw's first thing was to head for the river - it was the path that all RiverClan cats were most familiar with hunting. She leaned forward with a flicker of excitement as she saw the apprentice lash into the water only to bring up a fish moments later, killing it swiftly. Good! The pride that flickered in Amberpelt's chest grew larger at the sight, a grin flashing across her face as she waited to see what was next.

Splashpaw continued to sit close to the softly rippling water, eventually dropping into an impatient crouch as she waited for another fish to swim by. After a few long, excruciating heartbeats another flash of silver caught her attention and she was quick to react. Practically plunging into the river in her haste, Splashpaw was quick to pull out her second fish with another triumphant huff before quickly depositing the fish on the bank. Killing the wriggling fish with a slightly shaking paw, she was quick to hide the two fish safely away from any other creatures before hurriedly setting off to find her next two pieces of prey.

Amberpelt wasn't surprised when Splashpaw had little issue catching the second fish, straightening up as she watched the apprentice hide the two fish before padding away from the river. It was time for the tougher part of her assessment - catching any two pieces of land prey. The warrior was expecting some failure in this part as no RiverClan cat was all that skilled at it but as long as Splashpaw caught the two needed before sunset, then Amberpelt was more then happy to call this assessment good. But it was time to see how luck favored the apprentice.

Splashpaw trekked further away from the river, feeling her stomach give an chest-wrenching twist as the soothing sound of the river died away. Swallowing heavily, she paused to scent the air in search of any close by land prey. She could do this- just two more pieces of prey, how hard could it be? The fishy, muddy scent of a nearby frog caught her attention before she could further tangle herself in her thoughts.

Splashpaw slowly crept towards the unsuspecting frog, fighting the urge to let her tail twitch eagerly as she closed in upon the next potential piece of prey. Dropping into a neat crouch, she was slightly surprised to see the small creature hop away before she was ready to properly pounce. Letting out a little yelp, she darted forward after the frog, but it easily evaded her clumsy attempt at a catch. Whiskers dropping in disappointment, Splashpaw scuffed the ground with a huff before setting off once more.

Amberpelt stalked after Splashpaw through the reeds, her movements slow and careful not to cause any noise to alert the apprentice of her presence. Her green eyes flickered as she caught sight of a frog, her ears perking as she waited to see how Splashpaw did. She barely made any movement when the frog escaped from the poor apprentice, her ears flickering with slight disappoint. Splashpaw had rushed, panicking when the frog had made that movement. Patience was needed not just for catching fish but also for land prey, rushing like that led to mistakes. But she was certain that Splashpaw would do better....Hunting on land was a bit of a nerve-wracking thing for a RiverClan cat.

Why couldn't she had just been assigned to catching fish? That was the only prey RiverClan liked anyways! Still feeling a bit rattled from her loss, Splashpaw spent an extra amount of time dedicated to searching for prey other than frogs. After a few moments of searching seemingly in vain, it looked like her prayers for a different piece of prey to hunt were answered in the form of a plump sparrow.

After a moment of careful stalking, she hurriedly flung herself from the reeds before the sparrow had time to notice. Leaping out at the bird, Splashpaw's paws stretched wide as she attempted to grasp the bird. However, the Sparrow was just the slightest bit faster, and it only just managed to evade her swiping paws. Dropping back to her paws, Splashpaw let out a muffled groan of embarrassment and frustration- Sparkwillow would of never missed two pieces of prey like that!
