The first chapter [Open]

She was the spitting image of her father, sleek fur that was a patchwork of black and white. She was slightly fluffier than Silentstorm, but however the deep gaze that they shared was unmistakable. Violetkit, that was her name, named after the flowers that her mother apparently birthed her near. She was nothing like the sweet flower of her name sake though, even as a kit, she was stern. Violetkit lacked the innocence of youth, carrying a sadness in her.

It was though she was a reflection of grief, mourning violets.

Her mismatched eyes look out onto the camp, whiskers twitching as she looked over her clan. She felt like an outsider, but this was her home? Wasn't it?

Blazeflight was walking by the fresh kill pile, hoping to maybe eat a toad or something of the likes, considering she had done some decent hunting and patrolling today, and she had just checked to make sure the elders had eaten. She gingerly picked up a fairly average sized toad, and she was going to go lay down near the warriors den, but when she saw the younger, newer kit to Shadowclan, she decided to take her meal over to her. "Care to share a meal, Violetkit?" She mewed, placing the frog down and sitting in front of it, her head tilted slightly.

Ashkit caught sight of his sister, and pressed through the nursery's entrance, eyes locked on her dark pelt. It was strange, in their litter of four; two were light-furred, halfway white, and the remaining were black, like the swamps at night. They didn't look like siblings. The only sign that Ashkit was Silentstorm's son were a few black marks across his forehead and ear.

"Violetkit!" he mewed brightly when he reached his younger sister, nudging her side affectionately. She was strange—not like him or the other peppy kits in Shadowclan; she had a spark of something he couldn't explain or understand. He felt himself settle beside her, his white-and-ginger fur tickling the tips of her pelt. Though he was only born just before Violetkit, he protected her instinctively.

At the sound of another voice, he glanced up and met the russet fur of Blazeflight, a warrior he admired. Scars laced down her back, and he'd always been curious as to what happened. Shaking his fluffy head, the tom kit smiled up at her. "Can I have some too?" he blurted. His mouth began to water at the sight of the plump frog.

Willowkit tumbled into view, her fur wild to match her personality. Her bright amber eyes focused on her younger sister- her twin.
The small kit suppressed a laugh. Although her sister's fur, features and eyes (except for one) were identical to her own, they couldn't be more different. Violetkit was so quiet. It made Willowkit feel the need to protect her, to shield her from the world. She nudged her gently with her head and settled down on her other side, purring in a protective way. This was her only sister, and by Starclan she would keep her well.
She looked over her back and offered her younger brother a bright grin. Although Ashkit could be annoying, she felt just as protective towards him as her sister. He was so sweet- no she-cat deserved to break his heart.
"Hi Blazeflight!" She chirped, preparing them for her normal barrage of questions. "Ashkit is that your first piece of prey? I've already had mine. Violetkit, what do you think of the camp?"

Silentstorm padded into camp with a lizard and shrew clasped firmly in his jaws, when his eyes grazed over his kits and his sister, Blazeflight. After setting his prey down on the fresh-kill pile, he made his way towards them, an affectionate smile playing on his muzzle. "Hello kits. How has your day been so far?" He asked, curious as to what they had been up to while he was out before settling down beside Blazeflight. After Sparkwillow's death, Silentstorm had tried keeping an eye on them at all times, and when he couldn't, he had Littlebrook watch after them. Maybe he was a bit overprotective, but he couldn't risk something happening to his beautiful kits. His last piece of his mate. On the outside, he seemed to be dealing with Sparkwillow's death quite well, but that couldn't be farther from the truth. Every night, he would jump at any chance to patrol the borders in case of catching a glimpse of her. He knew it was impossible in the back of his mind, but nevertheless, he still hoped she would be just around every tree, or every bush. Plus he wasn't sleeping very well, if at all. He'd lay awake at night wondering what Sparkwillow's life would've been like had she not met him. Had he just walked away when they met at fourtrees. That led to his guilt. It was obviously his fault that she died. If they hadn't met, if they hadn't broken the code and had kits, she would probably still be alive and happy. Clearly it was his fault. Now, here he was with his precious kits, without their mother. They never got to know her and never would, which was probably for the best. How could they miss something they never had, right? Sighing inwardly, he licked his kits each on the head, and settled down to groom his fluffy black and white fur.
