Friends in Laurel's Nectar (For RainyHeart)

Nectarpaw basked in the sun outside the apprentice den, wondering what he should do with his time. The first thing that came to mind was play a game, but he should probably hunt or battle train instead. He remembered playing with a few kits right before their apprentice ceremony and right after his, and meeting up with one of them at the gathering while talking to that RiverClan apprentice. He smiled at the memory and decided to go find Laurelpaw now. He pranced happily into the apprentice den, hoping she was in there.
"Laurelpaw? Do you want to go hunting or something like that? I'm kind of bored."

Laurelpaw was lying down in her nest, batting mindlessly at a loose sprig of moss, when she heard someone enter the den. Looking up, she purred a friendly greeting to Necterpaw, before nodding and jumping up out of her nest. "Thank StarClan, I thought I was gonna be stuck in this boring den all day! Let's go!" Waving her sleek tail excitedly, Laurelpaw slipped past the tom and exited the den, purring as the warm sunlight soaked into her fur. Turning, she asked curiously; "So, where do you wanna go?"

"I don't know. Hunting in the open moor?" Nectarpaw suggested, wondering what Laurelpaw wanted to do. "Maybe near the outlook rock?" Nectarpaw paced excitedly back and forth on his paws, slowly making his way towards the camp exit. He wasn't in too much of a hurry, and he wanted to savor the feeling of having some free time.

"Sure, that sounds fun!" Eyes alight with excitement, Laurelpaw waited for a moment until Necterpaw caught up with her before trotting out of camp, onto the open moorland. Taking a deep breath, the white and black-ticked apprentice relished the scents carried on the breeze; of heather and gorse flowers, and wind-blown grass. She loved being out in her territory, and the thought of exploring it more always thrilled her. Turning, she looked back at her bi-colored friend and meowed; "I haven't been on the outlook rock yet, but I've heard that it's really cool." Cocking her head curiously, Laurelpaw asked; "Have you gone on it yet Necterpaw?"

"I haven't gone on it yet, but I have walked past it once or twice," Nectarpaw replied, taking in all the scents that greeted him at the camp's entrance. As the two of them walked out, he felt a tingle of excitement at the prospect of going hunting with Laurelpaw, in territory his mentor hadn't even shown him around in yet. Though the breeze was a little cold, the landscape showed signs of Newleaf everywhere. Sighing contentedly, he mewed; "Isn't it a nice day for hunting?"

The pale she-cat's eyes sparkled with curiosity, smirking playfully at her friend.  Purring, she waved her tail before meowing; "Well, what are we waiting for?  Let's climb it!"  Catching sight of the huge boulder in the distance, she decided against just dashing off; they could hunt on the way there.  Falling into step beside the tom apprentice, she nodded and replied "Yea, it's great out today.  Perfect to lure the-"  Her sentence was interrupted by her next words; a hare hopping out of it's warren.  Eyes narrowing, Laurelpaw began to sneak up on the creature, making sure to stay downwind and silent. Finally, putting on a great burst of speed, the lithe she-cat began to bolt after her quarry. The hare noticed, and tried to dash back into it's hole, but the young she-cat was too quick. It's life was ended with a snap of the neck. Head raised proudly, Laurelpaw carried the freshly-caught animal back over to Necterpaw, pride reading clearly on her face.

"I guess so," Nectarpaw said, but Laurelpaw had already chased after the hare by then. Sighing, he guessed they would be hunting on their way to the outlook rock. He saw that Laurelpaw had already caught something. 
"Nice catch!" Nectarpaw called to Laurelpaw, searching the moor for prey. He spotted movement closer to the outlook rock than he was. It was a rabbit, not as tasty as a hare but still, prey was prey. He padded after it silently, crouching a little so Laurelpaw could tell that he was hunting and not scare it off. As soon as he was as close to it as he dared to go, he dashed to it, and it started to run. He was faster than it though, and was soon over the rabbit. He struck it with his paw once before lunging and biting the back of its neck. Triumphant, he picked up his catch and trotted towards Laurelpaw.

"Great catch Necterpaw!" After setting her hare down on the ground, she had sat down to watch her friend pursue his quarry, ears twitching with intense interest. While he was walking back over to where she stood, the lithe she-cat looked around for a place to keep their prey while they explored the outlook rock. Catching sight of a gorse bush, she dragged her hare over to it and tucked it safely underneath the blossoms and thorns. Turning, she gestured with her tail and called for Necterpaw to do the same.

He smiled proudly at the other apprentice's praise, and wondered how much more he would catch for his clan. For a second he imagined catching so much prey the whole clan could be fed, then snapped back to reality at Laurelpaw's call. He trotted over to her and buried his rabbit deep inside the thorns, impressed at Laurelpaw's ability to find this spot so fast.
"Nice idea. Our catches will be safe," he told her after he was finished placing down his catch. He started towards the outlook rock again, eager to get there before too long.

After her friend had stuffed his catch in alongside her own, the lithe she-cat smirked and followed Necterpaw as he began to pad towards the Outlook Rock, a plan forming in her mind. Suddenly putting on a burst of speed, Laurelpaw dashed forward past his and yowled excitedly, "Whoever gets there last has to clean the nursery!" Laughing, the black-ticked she-cat turned and focused her attention on running, eyes narrowing in concentration.

Nectarpaw's eyes grew wide, then narrowed and dashed towards Laurelpaw. His calico markings were dappled by the sun as he ran after Laurelpaw, creating quite the scene. He would pass her, he had to! He put on another burst of speed, enough to catch up to Laurelpaw. But now he was breathing heavily, and was slowing his pace a little no matter how hard he tried not to. "You be knee deep in moss!" he managed to taunt.

Laurelpaw shifted her gaze as she sprinted to make eye-contact with Necterpaw before purring haughtily. "I won't, but you'll be!" Putting on a last tiny burst of extra speed, Laurelpaw tried to keep herself ahead of her friends but exhaustion soon began to set in. Slowly, her speed dropped back so that she and Necterpaw were neck and neck once again, and the large rock loomed closer with every paw-step. Even though it was only a friendly competition, Laurelpaw had always been a very competitive soul who couldn't bare to loose. Right now, at the risk of tying or even loosing, she gritted her teeth and narrowed her greenish-yellow eyes, trying to summon enough energy to push ahead.

Nectarpaw was noticeably lagging from tiredness. His extra burst of speed at the beginning had taken quite of bit of his energy, and he couldn't regain it.  He pushed forward again, nearly managing to regain his normal running speed. He could tell Laurelpaw would beat him, but that didn't stop him from trying.
