Honey, You've Got a Big Storm Coming [closed]

It seemed as if another issue had caused a rift in Windclan- although this time it was an internal issue. A few sunrises ago, Smokepelt had came barging back into camp with a former Windclan apprentice in tow. Initially, it hadn't gone over well, but after a day or so of frostiness and glares, it seemed as if everyone's fur had finally flattened. Well it seemed to of settled down before it was suggested that she take Goatpaw out for a little refresher in all things Windclan, and Brindlewhisker seemed to be as sulky as Smokepelt had been whenever Ashstar had publicly scolded him- but could you really blame her? Goatpaw would always seem like a stranger to her. She hadn't been the most welcoming cat whenever Goatpaw had initially returned, and currently she still lacked the whole 'welcoming' attitude- but if Ashstar wanted Goatpaw here, then she wouldn't openly protest her leader's decision.

Trailing through the short, soft grass that filled the hollow, Brindlewhisker stalked towards the flattened patch of grass that she had observed Goatpaw bedding down in on multiple occasions. Reaching the spot where the apprentice usually seemed to linger, she let out a short, cold 'mrrow' of greeting to announce her presence. Giving an impatient nod of her head, she simply ground out the impatient phrase, "Come on, I'm taking you out on patrol." 'This'll be even more painful that spending the day talking about feelings with Mottleheart.' She reflected, partly wishing she could be with her former friend than Goatpaw- although either way she could already feel a blinding migraine coming on as a result.

"Okay," replied Goatpaw, not wanting to make a bad impression. She got up swiftly, taking note of Brindlewhisker's impatient tone, and hustled out. She almost made eye contact, but shied away. She could see the stretch of land that moored before her, and each step she took ever tentatively. She was afraid of messing up, but not much had happened when she was a loner. She was small, but she wasn't much smaller than Brindlewhisker was. Should I start a conversation? wondered Goatpaw, but answered her own questions at each outcome. No, no, no. Goatpaw seemed to feel awkward around everyone now, impervious only around Smokepelt. He probably had a mate, though. Goatpaw looked up at the sun, but her eyes soon fixed on the ground as she walked. She felt a rattled aura around Brindlewhisker, which made Goatpaw uncomfortable.

The moor seemed to be unseasonably warm- green grasses shooting up everywhere, with moorbirds darting to and fro everywhere. Despite all the warmth and birdsong, the silence hung heavily between the pair of she-cats. Brindlewhisker continued to pad forward and quickly pulled ahead of Goatpaw, pace brisk as they followed a well-worn rabbit track. The fresh air and soft breeze helped lull the build up of irritation that she had felt over the past few days- it was putting her in a slightly more tolerable mood. 'Although if I go an entire patrol without speaking, I'm sure Smokepelt would be hard on my heels for not welcoming Goatpaw.' She reflected with a sharp eye roll, grateful that she was in front of the apprentice.

"So when do you expect to be returned to apprentice duties?" Brindlewhisker questioned, tone still frigid, "You being trapped in camp and getting soft won't do anycat any good." She continued, swerving abruptly to lead their duo towards the Gorge- the troublesome site hadn't been brushed up since a few days prior. Her voice and words were tightly clipped as she did her best to remain civil- after all there was no reason to send the apprentice wailing to Smokepelt just yet. 'Although I'm sure he'll give me a dirty look or two just for taking Goatpaw out without him supervising us.' She reflected, eyes rolling once more, although that thought sent a twinge of amusement through her.

"Extremely soon," she mewed in response, glad to break the growing tension. "I don't need anyone thinking I'm lazy as a vole." They already do, she mused unhappily. Goatpaw was scarcely able to look up at Brindlewhisker; a hard glare she expected would greet her. But her pinkish gaze was flitting about, looking for prey. She'd done a fair share of hunting while she was a loner, and seldom talked to anyone. It felt odd. Having caused the uproar in camp when she returned, she was extremely wary of her actions, especially around Brindlewhisker. She noted how spiteful the other she-cat looked. She felt no peace as the clouds inhabited the sky, blue drowned by grim patches of grey. Leafbare, thought Goatpaw. Trees sprung up from the ground a while away, but it was just flat moorland for now.

Brindlewhisker nodded absently as Goatpaw spoke, continuing to pad towards the Gorge, which was now in plain view of the she-cats. As they approached the gaping gash in the earth, she slowed the pace greatly to avoid tripping over outcrops and thickets of heather- although at this point she wouldn't really care if either of them tripped and plummeted into the Gorge. The sharp stones that littered the earth surrounding the Gorge pricked her pads in an irritating manner, but the occasional twinge of pain they caused was the furthest thing on her mind. 'I think I know who'll take over the trouble of being her mentor.' She reflected with a scowl, continuing to edge along the jagged cliff that made up Windclan side of the Gorge.

Opening her jaws slightly to taste the air, Brindlewhisker picked up the pace once more once it became evident that RiverClan scent was incredibly faint. 'At least there's nothing here to keep us out longer than necessary.' She mused, undeniably relieved at the thought. "We'll hunt for a bit once we're a little bit farther from the Gorge, and then we'll be free of each other's company." She mewed briskly, not even turning her head to gaze at Goatpaw as she spoke. After finishing her sentence, she broke out into a quick jog, eagerly galloping ahead- at this point she just wanted to return to camp.

Goatpaw branched off as well, an irritable look on her face. StarClan, that she-cat, she thought disgustedly, beginning to move farther from the gorge. She saw it fall away, letting her breath go. She trotted, gaze scanning the rocky area for any prey. Why'd she even want to take me out here? To berate me? she wondered sourly, barely ruffling the grass as she narrowed her gaze to a sliver to spot any hidden prey. Her muscles weren't exactly as lean as they used to be, and she wished she had never left. Then maybe no one would hate me, and I'd be the perfect little princess they want me to be, she reflected with a scowl.

Brindlewhisker continued to pull ahead, allowing Goatpaw to circle off on her own to search for something to catch, padding over a short, rocky ridge that was known to frequently hold rabbit warrens during the Newleaf season. Hunting in pairs was usually not something of her preference, no matter the cat she was hunting with. 'At least her hunting skills won't be slacking.' She reflected with a soft hum, continuing to pad along the crest above the shallow valley. For several heartbeats, nothing came into view despite the strong scent of rabbit, and she continued to strode along the rocky ridge quietly. Spotting the short, stringy shape of a rabbit, Brindlewhisker watched the small creature hop along absentmindedly, clearly unaware of the cat watching.

After stalking the scrawny rabbit for a few more heartbeats, she darted forward after the small creature, hardly giving the small creature anytime to flee. Giving a brief chase, she was easily able to snag the squalling rabbit in her claws before killing it through a sharp, painless bite to the neck. Grasping the limp rabbit in her jaws, Brindlewhisker padded back to where she had last spotted Goatpaw, sitting down with the stringy creature hanging from her teeth, patiently waiting for the apprentice to make her own catch so they could return to camp.

Goatpaw spotted something similar—a hare. The white she-cat stalked up on it, shutting her eyes and praying to StarClan that she would catch it. Praying won't help you catch a thing! she scolded inwardly, claws flexing. Her hindquarters wriggled silently, and she bared her fangs at the brownish smudge in the tall grass. She was already anxious enough to return to Brindlewhisker, but it would be worse if she returned empty-pawed. The sleek apprentice crouched so low that she was a complanate feline, like a melting patch of snow in the thin tussocks. She then crawled forwards, but felt herself volatile; she took a deep breath to calm herself down, and then pounced.

She then swiftly snatched the hare up in her mouth with fleet, pink jaws. She could hear the crunch of its tiny bones, but instead of glowing with pride, she padded back wordlessly. She stepped into the clearing, expecting a remark that would hiss into her ears to catch more. She prodded the ground delicately as she walked back up, making sure to look alert so that Brindlewhisker wouldn't dislike her as much. She dipped her head to the she-cat as an act of respect, suppressing a sigh of relief that the warrior had caught the same amount as her. The previously malleable snow had melted into hard ground.

Brindlewhisker's ears twitched as Goatpaw approached, hare grasped firmly in her jaws, tail tip twitching with a glimpse of approval- at least they wouldn't risk being caught out hunting if a storm broke. Snatching a brief glance up at the sky, she noted that the sky had become even more heavy and dark- a storm was definitely on its way. "Alright," She mewed, tone impartial as she addressed Goatpaw, "That should be enough for today." She finished, dipping her head back down to grasp the rabbit back up in her jaws. Rising to her paws, she nodded her head in the direction that they had originally trekked from before beginning to pick her way down the rock-crusted slope, narrowly avoiding the sharp rocks that broke the surface of the dry moorland. "We can head home now before the weather breaks." Brindlewhisker called, words slightly muffled by the prey that was swinging from her jaws once more as she began to pad back to camp.

Goatpaw nodded, toeing the ground carefully. She didn't want to say anything in fears of unnecessary discipline. The glimpse of approval in Brindlewhisker's eyes had cheered Goatpaw. She carried her prey in her jaws tightly to arrive back to camp, where she knew she'd only be met with many more scornful reproaches. The petite white she-cat saw the moorland stretch lazily in front of her, and the rabbit, whose life had just been met with a brutal end, had once inhabited it. Goatpaw silently gave thanks to StarClan that she'd gotten a chance to even hunt... no matter who it was with.
