Maplepaw's Assessment

Pinewhisker breathed in the cool air of morning, scanning the clearing he had led Maplepaw into with a smile. In this exact clearing, his former mento had announced the beginning of his assessment. He wondered whether his appprentice could feel the same persistent sense of glory, or it was just inside his brain. He purred before turning to the silver tabby with a mysterious grin.

"Maplepaw, you are now close to becoming a warrior, but before you may get your name from Darkstar, you will have to go throuh your assessment. Your task is to catch me three pieces of prey by sunhigh." he meowed, looking up with a squint at the sun rising just a little bit over the treetops. With an encouraging nod, the brown tomcat vanished in the underbush, ready to stalk upon his apprentice and see her progress.

Nodding her head as she padded into the clearing behind Pinewhisker, she felt proud that she had come thus far and was ready to become a warrior. I hope to do you well on this assessment. She thought as Pinewhisker rushed into the underbrush, nowhere to be seen. Shooting off from where she was, she slowed her pace down and sniffed the air for prey. Scenting a small mouse from her left, she turned around slowly and crouched down, tail hitting the snow and snapping the mouse's head in her direction. While it sat in horror, she lunged at it, watching it shoot off into its tiny burrow. She attempted to reach her claw in, and smashed her face into the side of the tree that the mouse had made its burrow next to. Shaking away the feeling of dread, she padded away from the area, knowing any prey within the area would be scared off, and that she would have to try another area.

Pinewhisker noted the mistake in his mind, before retreating more into his ckver and waiting for the scent of his apprentice to be far enough to follow without being seen or heard.

Sniffing the air once she was out of the previous area, she could smell a squirrel lurking nearby. Once she locked onto it, she crouched down, remembering her mistake from before. Leaping onto the fast moving prey, she landed square on its back, biting its neck and killing it within an instant.

Pienwhisker nodded pridefully as his appprentice succeeded in correcting herself and catching her first piece of prey. Still nervous for her, he continued his quiet pursuit.

Sniffing yet another squirrel, Maplepaw figured that there must be a family of them nearby. Stalking the small piece of prey, she waited for the right moment. Leaping from the underbrush, she batted the squirrel on the neck, and with a hard blow to the neck, killed it. Burying it with the other squirrel that she totally buried (;-;), she dropped her jaw to scent the air once more.

Sniffing out a mouse, Maplepaw crouched down low on the ground, not a single peep from her. Knowing Pinewhisker was watching, she felt nervous that she would mess up again. Praying to Starclan, she leaped upon the mouse, sucessfully catching it and killing it with a single blow. She had done it. Three pieces of prey. Digging uup her buried prey, she padded back into the clearing where she had started, she awaited Pinewhisker to show so that they could go back to camp with her prey.
