Recovery Patrol [Closed]

Larksong was in high spirits, her eyes glimmering as she sat by the entrance of the camp with her tail wrapped around her paws. Her pelt was neatly groomed, not a hair out of place other then for the group of scars that ran down her side - left from the badger attack that had almost taken her life. But the the wound was fully healed, she had made a full recovery thanks to Honeydrop and she was finally allowed to leave the camp without fear of her wound reopening or somehow infecting it. To celebrate this moment and the fact that she was now a mentor, she had decided to already start Emberpaw's training.


Smokestripe yawned as he left the den, shaking his head as he glanced at the night sky that hung above. It was early for a ShadowClan cat, even if the rest of the Clans were settling into their nest for the night. The air was crisp with the leaf-bare chill as he took in a deep breath, glancing around the camp to see Larksong waiting at the entrance of the camp. He blinked, happy to see her looking so high in spirits as he trotted over to her. "Are you planning to go on a patrol?" he asked his denmate, smiling softly at her.


Larksong turned to look at the gray and black warrior as he came patting over. She paused as she thought about how to res ponce - this was a patrol for Emberpaw but having another warrior to watch her back was always a good idea. While she was fully healed enough to leave the camp she wasn't in top shape. "I was going to go out with Emberpaw and do some training. Would you like to join?" Her voice was chipper, her amber eyes gleaming.


Emberpaw, huh? Remembering that Larksong had been named a mentor not long ago, he nodded. "Sure, I'll be happy to tag along," he said as he sat down next to the older warrior. Not they just had to wait for Emberpaw.

Emberpaw quickly get up and tried to found her new mentor. She was very exited and she even forgot that some mentors don˝t start with training next day. But it was her lucky day, because Larksong already waited for her with another male cat. Emberpaw said very loud greetings, so she even disturbed other cats which were slepping: "Hello, Larksong! Hello..." Then she immediately asked, as almost all aprentices do: "What will we learn today?"

Larksong smiled softly as Emberpaw came patting up, quickly getting to her feet with Smokestripe following after her. "Emberpaw, this is Smokestripe," she said with a dip of her head to the young warrior. She figured introducing the two would be important if Smokestripe was going to be tagging along. "He is going to be joining us for this patrol."


"Hello Emberpaw," Smokestripe purred as he looked at the younger she-cat. He was happy that Larksong was allowing him to tag along, wondering indeed what Larksong would be teaching her young apprentice today. His whiskers twitched as he waited for the tortoiseshell to speak.


"I'll be teaching you how to hunt," she said with a small dip of her head as she spun and with a flicker of her tail, led Smokestripe and Emberpaw into the territory. "As your mentor, I am tasked with many things to teach you. How to act like a proper warrior, how to interact with cats of the other Clans, how to deal with intruders. To many apprentices, the most important of these many lessons are hunting and battling. But, out of the two, I see hunting as more important. Battles are not likely to happen - they will happen one day but hunting is a main focus of every cat in the Clan. We need to feed everybody in the Clan and so hunting is the most important as it is needed for day to day life." She glanced over her shoulder as she led the two to where she - with Smokestripe's help if he decided to lend a paw - would be teaching Emberpaw how to hunt, wondering what the young apprentice's reation would be to what she had just said.


Smokestripe could only nod in agreement with Larksong's statement. He knew how important knowing how to fight was after having to save Ravenclaw from those rats as an apprentice and when he had to save Ravenclaw - again - and Larksong from that badger with the help of his patrol. But those were situations that he wasn't sure he would have to see again. But hunting, he did it almost every other day to help feed his Clan. Truly, out of the two, it was the most important. The fact that the idea of fighting another cat still terrified him didn't help either.

Emberpaw noded with same excitement and it was clear, that she would be also happy, if Larksong would teach her how to clean warriors dens. But this was better than cleaning stinky dens and looking for fleas; this was hunting. She would caught her first prey, maybe, if she would had enough luck. She would learned many positions in which she could hunt. When Thrushstar would called: "Let´s all cats, old enough, to catch their own prey gather..." she would be able to join them. She quickly remembered, that she was on her hunting lesson, so she must listened to her mentor. She said, to announced that she is ready: "I am listening."

Larksong came to a stop in a small clearing, a good area to teach Emberpaw. She turned to face her apprentice, catching Smokestripe sitting down to watch. She took a deep breath before launching into her teaching. "Alright, first thing first - when it comes to hunting, you need to know the hunting crouch." She easily fell into it, her body posed ready to sneak along quickly along the shadows as she kept her eyes trained on her apprentice. "You want to keep your weight evenly across your paws to remain quiet. As a ShadowClan cats, we prize our ability to hide in the shadows due to our mostly dark colored pelts. This is as useful for fighting as it is for hunting. We need to remain unheard and unseen by our prey until its to late, even if they do take notice." She opened her mouth to say more but paused, before shaking her head. "Drop into a crouch and we will go further from there."

Emberpaw listened with tension, but when Larksong stoped talking she immediately began to made best crouch. She tried to reminded all steps, that Larksong used in creating such wonderfull crouch. She was scared, because she didn´t want to disappointed her mentor, and they were not alone, so Smokestripe could also saw her failure. Emberpaw first took a deep breath. But when she tried to continue next steps, she coughed because of lack of air. She tried again. And again. Forth time, she finally managed to continue. So she bend down a little and then tried to walked. First was walking very heavy, because all her weight was in her legs. She looked at her mentor with look, that said: "How can I take weight from legs to other body?"

Larksong frowned with concern when Emberpaw couched only to cough when she tried to move until she finally got it down. The warrior padded over to her apprentice, studying how the apprentice was crouching as he paced around the she-cat to get a taste of what was wrong. Then, she came to a stop. "Its a good first attempt but you need to relax your body," she spoke softly as she flickered her tail over to Smokestripe. "Having your body tensed up makes it harder to move and also makes it harder to breath. As for your stance..." she paused as she leaned forward slight, hooking her paw gently around one of Emberpaw's legs as she tugged on it gently to make the apprentice's stance just a bit wider.

"Move your paws out a bit more so that you can easily hold your body down lower and put your weight there but make sure not to hold your body down so low that you are dragging your fur though the mud and snow. Use your tail to keep your balance but don't wave it widely or have it stick up into the air - the prey will be sure to notice you if you aren't low to the ground and if you are making wider movement." She paused as she flickered her tail over to Smokestripe. "Speaking of which...Smokestripe, are you up for a hunting example?"



The black and grey warrior had been watching with interest as Larksong paced around her apprentice, correction her apprentice in a gentle tone. He had been so distracted by watching the older warrior correct Emberpaw that he found himself startled when his named was call. He jumped to his paws, nodding quickly as he tasted the air. Luckily, he caught the scent of some prey as he dropped into a couch as he stalked across the clearing toward his scented prey. It was a frog, sitting on a log on the other side of the clearing - just barely hidden enough that it didn't seem to see the cats as a threat. His stalking was perfect but when he decided to leap for it - he was just a bit to far away. The frog noticed him and quickly hopped away, leaving Smokestripe with empty paws. The tom frowned with a sigh, shaking his head as he turned to head back to the two. "So...Perhaps that isn't the best example," he said with a small smile.


Larksong purred gently at the tom with a shake of her head. "It was good all the way up to the jump, Smokestripe." Her gaze flickered back to her apprentice. "Did you see what Smokestripe did wrong? He jumped from to far away when the frog could still see him coming. You want to get as close up to it as you can to avoid that, to make sure that they don't have the time to escape before they are in your paws." She tasted the air, catching a hint of another piece of prey lurking around. "How about you give it a try, Emberpaw?"


OOC: Alright. On WCC, we are currently using a Hunting System to decide if we catch prey or not. In normal hunting topics, you do not have to use it but for your warrior assessment, you must use it to show an understanding of how the system work. It should be noted that this system is in beta and may be changed in the future (or possibly removed even). The first thing you need to know is that the hunting system relies on a dice-based system. To know how to roll dice, you more or less know how the system works.

Under the area in which you write the post, is the preview button. Upon clicking on that, you will notice something - under the preview of the post is a 'Rule' post with a bunch of information, we will be coming back to that in a second. Under the 'post a reply' section is a little thing called Dices roll with two clickable boxes on it. The first one, labeled Dices rolls #1. Clicking on the box will pull up three things - Big dice, effect dice and hunting dice. Big dice is unimportant while effect dice is for battling (I'll be teaching Whitepaw how to fight. Expect that topic soon) We, of course, will be using the hunting dice. Next to that, is Dice rolls. Those are the number of dice you are rolling. For hunting, you will always be rolling two. One to find out what you found, one to find out if you caught it. Once you have it set to Hunting Dice and 2 rolls, you just type up your topic and post normally. When you do, a bot will post after you and give you the two numbers you rolled. Using these numbers, you find out how well you hunted.

The first number corresponds to what you have found - using the Rule section that pops up when you make/preview a post outside of the Camp RP section. Lets say for example you rolled a 4 on the ShadowClan territory. Using the list above, it means that you have found a frog. The second number corresponds to if you have caught the prey or not. Using this post (Currently found in every RP section due to it being a global announcement but will be found under the Rule section when it becomes a normal post) you can figure out if you caught it depending on rank. For example, if you rolled a 5, Emberpaw would fail to catch it as, for an apprentice, a 1-3 is a catch for them while if Smokestripe, a young warrior, rolled a 5, he would instead catch it.

You may notice on the Rule section that there is a battle encounter. If you roll a 1 on the encounter (first) die, you are attacked by a creature depending on where you are. In the ShadowClan territory, its a badger but for WindClan territory, they are instead attacked by a hawk if they roll a one. Hopefully, the dice will be in your favor and you will avoid rolling a one on the encounter die. (Lets hope I avoid it as well)

I know this is a bit much but hopefully this teaches you how to catch prey here on WCC~ For your post, I simply want you to try catching something. Once you roll your dice, simply go back and edit your post to reflect what you rolled.

Emberpaw slowly breathed, she was scared because of this unexpected mission. Small amount of her already small courage was tapmted, because of Smokestripe, who also caught a prey. Warrior, much older than her and much trained than her didn´t caught a prey. How can she do this? But she knew that hesitation wouldn´t helped, cause her mentor expected that she will tried and failure or won and bring a prey in the ShadowClan camp. She quickly noded to Larksong and continue searching for some smell or voices of little legs and nose.  Emberpaw tried to be in position, similar to Larksong´s. She relaxed her body. Her paws were light and nose smelling for tempting smells. Emberpaw watched also, that her stance is not too high and not too low, so she didn´t make noises with thrashing the leaves below her.
Then she finally smelled something. It was soft and tempting smell, which managed to brought Emberpaw closer to his source. But she remembered Smokestripe mistake and she stoped enough far from a prey. Then she thought. She must did some steps and then just jumped. If she would be lucky, then killing bite will continue.
But then something unexpected happened. It was a prey, who attacked her!

IC: The scent had hit Larksong to late. Badger. Her whole body froze, her breath quickening as the scent overwhelmed her. She could almost feel the pain in her side again but in a sudden surge of protectiveness, she darted forward. "Emberpaw! Back away!" Her voice screeched, terror flashing in her eyes as she saw the great black and white beast appear from the undergrowth. It was the same one...Her steps slowed down for a second, terror almost causing her to stop completely but she couldn't - she would happily take the same blow she took for Ravenclaw for her own apprentice. She laughed into the air, soaring over Emberpaw's head as she landed on the badger's face, her claws digging into it as she hissed. The large creature swayed under her grip, no longer interested in the apprentice but the warrior that blocked its view. Its paws swiped upwards but Larksong scrambled out of reach, keeping it distracted for now.

Larksong used Leap-and-Hold on the badger. Deals 9 damage and costs 10 stamina. The badger is stunned for 1 turn.

Smokestripe didn't move when the badger appeared, its form looming over Emberpaw. But then Larksong darted past him like a mother protecting her kit as she launched herself right at the creature's face. If she wouldn't let her fears stop her, then he couldn't either. "Badger!" he yowled as loudly as he could, hoping that one of his Clanmates could hear him as he darted forward. "Emberpaw, do what you can!" he breathed as he passed the no-doubt terrified apprentice. Emberpaw didn't have any battle training, did they? He could only hope that the apprentice could grasp the basics as they took on this creature.

Smokestripe used Run-and-Tackle on the badger. Deals 12 damage (9 base + 3 for unfocused opponent) and costs 10 stamina.

OOC: Alright. Well, this is unfortunate but I guess it does mean saving me having to make a battle topic. Other people will be joining to help bring this badger down however. This will also most likely be the end of the topic due to this attack but we can still count it as a patrol due to this unforeseen event.

You did good on the hunting by the way~ Looks like you got that down (also for record, normally those who rolled the 1 would RP the badger and whatnot, but because you are new, I'll just take over it for now)

Battling is a bit more simpler then hunting, dice rolling barely needed. Every cat has a rank - kit, apprentice, newly appointed warrior, young warrior...Ect. Each of these ranks has health and stamina and a certain amount of moves that they can use. As an apprentice, you have 20 health and 80 stamina while Larksong and Smokestripe, as young warriors, instead have 45 and 160 stamina. The health and stamina of each rank can be found here. More health means that you can take more damage, and the stamina means you can more moves before you run out. If either of these hit zero, then you are out of the fight. Either you faint, or you run away. Your cat doesn't die unless you want them to do so you never need to worry about that.

Each rank-up expands the amount of moves you can use along with increasing the damage that each of them does. The list of moves with damage and stamina cost are found here. The stamina cost remains the same for every rank, its simply the damage that changes. Certain moves have special effects, such as dealing more damage to an opponent not focused on you (such as here, the badger is distracted on Lark at the moment so Smoke's attack deals more damage) or some of the stunning such as the move that Lark did on the badger.

Stunning moves means that the opponent cannot attack for a certain amount of turns. Most stunning moves have a certain amount of time, such as one turn while two requires a dice roll with the number rolled (using the Effect die) decides how long they are stunned. If you use one of the dice-rolling stun, its always a good idea to edit your post after rolling to say how long your opponent is stunned. Also, a turn lasts until you post again. So if your opponent is stunned for two turns, they they have to post twice before they can attack again.

Also, keeping track of your opponent's health (like I did in my post) along with your own is standard practice to keep things from getting confusing. You simply list what their health/stamina looks like after your post is done and damage is taken into account. Uh...I don't know what else I need to say. Here is also the Battle Rules. They are important as well.

Off in the distance, Ravenclaw led her apprentice, Marshpaw, throughout the territory. It was difficult to try and hunt in the middle of leaf-bare and she knew, better than most of the clan, that hunting was nothing to take lightly and that the young tom could have used all the practice and training that he could have gotten. "Let's see if you can hunt down a lizard today," the she-cat meowed, taking in a deep breath and pausing to search through the scents around them. "I think I smell... I..." The she-cat stopped, a colder chill rushing through her spine than anything leaf-bare could force on her. "Badger."

The warrior narrowed her eyes, glancing back. "Marshpaw, stay close." No matter what, she'd protect the young apprentice. Ravenclaw ran off, running towards the source of the scent, the sharp pitch of caterwauls hitting her ears. Larksong! Smokestripe and Emberpaw! She bared her teeth. "Rotten piece of fox-dung!" That thing just didn't learn it's lesson, did it?

She rushed in, unsheathing her claws and sliding across the mud. She twisted around, throwing her weight into the clumsy creature's side.

Ravenclaw used 'back kick', costing 15 stamina and dealing 10 damage to the badger.

Marshpaw moved slower through the territory than Ravenclaw. His nose to the ground in an attempt to smell prey better. When he noticed Ravenclaw stopped moving, he paused as well, then scrunched his nose as a an unpleasant scent reached his muzzle. At his mentor's order, he ran to her side. The pace made his legs burn.

The sounds of his clanmate's calling out gave him the push to run faster. Adrenaline rushed through him as he watched Ravenclaw attack a huge black and white creature. He skidded to a halt, taking in the beasts form and large shape. Eyes wide in panic. He didn't know what to do! Marshpaw looked to his mentor, she seemed to have it's attention for now. A flash of colour caught his attention. He turned his head to see Emberpaw, Larksong and Smokestripe. They were fighting too.

The five of them could take one mouse-brained badger. He gathered his courage and lunged. He didn't know any real battle moves, but he had claws, which he used to rake against the creature's back legs, far from it's glinting teeth.

Shadewillow had been out on a solitary stroll- enjoying what little free time he had now, while also doing a bit of hunting. He had just rounded a bend when the faint sounds of yowling and snarling reached his ears, as well at the rank stench of a badger, causing his blood to run cold for a moment. After standing there for a moment, he shook himself and rushed forward, weaving through the sparse undergrowth, Shadewillow was met with the sight of Larksong, Smokestripe, Ravenclaw, Emberpaw, and Marshpaw viciously defending themselves against the looming, muscular shape of a badger. "Can't any cat go out of camp without running into a badger? I swear Larksong, Smokestripe, Ravenclaw and I just attacked one as well!" He reflected with a lash of his tail.

Dropping into a crouch, he continued to observe the fight for a few seconds while running over a few possible attack scenarios, quickly deciding on what was best as Marshpaw rushed to attack the Badger. Darting forward with a yowl, Shadewillow exploded from the undergrowth, hurling himself forward towards the Badger. Rearing up in front of the striped face of the badger, he lashed out viciously at the Badger's face, aiming purposely for the creature's small, bright eyes. "It sounded like you guys needed some help!" he called, grunting slightly at the effort of keeping himself upright. "It's only Emberpaw and Marshpaw's first time out of camp and they're already fighting a Badger." He thought with a scowl as he continued to rake at the Badger's face before dropping back down onto all fours and darting away.
