Birds of a Feather [Ravenpaw's Hunting Assessment] (Closed)

Ravenpaw ran deeper off into the territory, catching the slightest hint of lizard off into the distance, but she couldn't make out where. Instead, she paused elsewhere, trying to catch a fresher scent nearby and closer to her.

Another scent of lizard, the same one perhaps, but still a little stale she noted. It was hard to distinguish the different scents between the mud and snow. Ravenpaw had to close her eyes, concentrate, try and find something she could work with.

Larksong watched as Ravenpaw strolled away, waiting a bit before she followed after the she-cat. Keeping to the shadows, she followed as the apprentice. When Ravenpaw missed the first frog she frowned slightly. Ravenpaw hadn't even had time to catch it before it was gone. She knew the pain of missing prey - she had failed so many times in her own assessment that could only hope that in Ravenpaw burned the same spirit. Next was the toad and she watched as Ravenpaw went for it twice only to miss it both times. Her eyes flashed with worry as she watched the apprentice grumble something under her breath. She wanted Ravenpaw to succeeded but if the she-cat gave up, there would be no chance of it. But when she saw the apprentice get up to continue her search, Larksong sighed in relief as she kept following the apprentice. Then, Ravenpaw did it. She caught a frog. She heard the she-cats responce to catching it and smiled softly.

Then Ravenpaw seemed to have hit a hard spot. She stood there, searching for the scent of anything. Larksong thought it was odd, noticing the lack of prey as well. She tasted the air with a frown, before picking up the scent of something. It was...Odd, she didn't recognize it and knew it didn't belong to a cat or any prey she knew of. Her eyes narrowed as she moved forward slightly, trying to locate it when she saw it. Black fur intermixed with white - heading straight for Ravenpaw. The memory of tales came to her mind and her breath caught in her throat.

A badger.

She spun and darted in the direction of Ravenpaw, bursting out of the shadows with a gasp. "Ravenpaw! Run and get help!" she hissed sharply as she slid to a stop, the scent of the badger growing stronger and stronger. "There is a badger coming right for-" She cut off as the badger came crashing into the clearing. It came to a lumbering stop, staring at the two cats with black beady eyes as Larksong stepped in front of the apprentice. "Go get help, Ravenpaw," she growled under her breath with a lash of her tail. "I'll distract the badger."

Without waiting to see if the apprentice had done what she was told, Larksong charged forward with a hiss. She rammed into the beast as hard as she could, making it take a step back as she slashed at it with her claws. The beast roared at her and before Larksong could move away, she felt the strong limb of the creature ram into her side. She yowled in pain as claws ranked at her body but it was cut short as the the strong blow scent her flying right into a tree. She could not have expected how strong the badger was.

She collapsed to the ground as all the air left her lungs, blood dipping down her side as she struggled to get to her feet but found herself far to dazed. She fell into a heap as the shadow of the badger fell over her. Dazed and weak from the blow and the deep wound the badger had inflected, there was little she could do to defend herself.

Larksong used Run and Tackle on the badger. It deals 8 damage and costs 10 stamina.

The badger used Heavy Blow on Larksong. It deals 25 damage and costs 20 stamina.

Ravenpaw opened her eyes, the wind changing direction and blowing her way. The strangest scent caught her nose. It was nothing like she'd ever smelled before and she wasn't sure what to make of it. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see a large shape parting the grass, rumbling in the distance and coming closer, closer, closer...

It was Larksong's sudden yowl that had snapped her out of her short daze. The she-cat was on her feet in an instant, hairs standing straight on end. "A badger? How?!" She took a few uncertain steps back, watching as the warrior stood on bravely, urging her to run for help and facing off against the creature. Ravenpaw could hear her own blood roaring in her ears.

At first, she'd started to listen, turning tail and running off - and hating herself for it, like she were some sort of coward. In desperation, the apprentice dared to look back, watching as Larksong was quickly striked down by the creature. There was no doubt in her mind... If she fled now, then Larksong would die. She couldn't run.

The black cat barred her teeth, halting in her tracks and facing the badger again. "Hey!" She snarled, "Leave her alone!" She bunched up her muscles, sprinting back in and twisting as she leaped, narrowly avoiding the sharp snaps of it's jaws as she slammed her paws into the ground, sending heaps up mud flying into the creature's eyes.

Ravenpaw used 'Mud Slap' on Badger-kun, costing 10 stamina and dealing 2 damage. Badger-kun is stunned for one turn.

When it was clear that Ravenpaw had come back for her, Larksong tried to open her mouth to tell the apprentice to run. The badger could easily kill her but Ravenpaw bravely stood there, barely dodging the bite of the beast before blinding it with a brilliantly timed spray of mud. Larksong shifted, trying to get to her paws but the wound in her side sent agonizing pain though her and she collapsed into a pile once more. Blood oozed from her wounds and she feared that if she did survive, she would end up with a terrible scar on her side from the blow.


Smokestripe was nervous. He was leader his first patrol as a warrior and had decided to go patrol checking. He was tasting the air when something caught his attention - a scent that didn't belong. He waved his tail in a signal for the group to stop as he focused on the scent. He frowned before he turned and headed in that direction, feeling safe with his Clanmates at his back. As he drew closer he caught the scent of two cats but before he could figure out which was which the scent of blood washed over him. His eyes widen with surprise as he darted forward in panic.

It didn't take long to find them and he came to a stop in shock and fear when he saw Ravenpaw facing against a black and white beast that he realized was no doubt a badger. By the looks of it, Ravenpaw was unhurt but then he saw Larksong laying next to a tree, blood pooling from her side. He had grown close with Larksong - they had even become warriors together so seeing her so badly hurt with Ravenpaw putting herself in harm's way to protect her sent a wave of anger running though him. He would not see them die after watching the horror of Ravenpaw being attacked by rats when he was an apprentice. The badger looked stun, roaring in anger over mud in its eyes and he knew now was the best chance to attack. With a yowl, he darted forward from the shadows and sliced at the badger with all of his might.

Shadewillow had eagerly joined Smokestripe's patrol; enjoying his new found freedom. But after they came upon the sight of Ravenpaw facing off against a massive Badger, while Larksong was barely conscious and looking worse-for-wear. After glimpsing Smokestripe hurl himself from the shadows at the massive badger, he quickly slunk around to the opposite side of the creature before leaping out in front of the creature; claws unsheathed and face twisted into an enraged snarl. Making sure that Blazepaw was out of the way, he darted out in front of the creature, and quickly reared up onto his hindlegs before wildly lashing out at the creature's striped face, before bounding away and out of reach.

Shadewillow used Rear-Up To Slash, Dealing -9 in Damage, Costing -15 in Stamina.

Skidding to a halt next to Smokeface, the warrior watched in horror as a badger stood in front of the patrol. Where in StarClan's name had it come from? Before Mudfoot was able to do anything, Smokestripe and Blazepaw lept forward and took some blows at the creature. Raising his hackles, he wasn't going to just stand around and watch his clanmates get slaughtered. Running forward, the tom let out a yowl and reared up on his hind legs, slashing unsheathed claws at the beast's face.

Mudfoot used Rear-Up to Slash causing 17 damage and costing 15 stamina.

Swiftpaw was so excited to go on this patrol! He had never been with an official patrol before, so this was a whole new experience, especially since he was with other cats he didn't know. And they were all warriors! However, he froze in his place as they came across Ravenpaw and her mentor fighting off a badger. What was with all of these animals in the territory? This time, though, he was not going to stand by and watch others fight for him. He was going to get involved! "Leave my sister alone!" he yowled, running toward the large animal.

For a moment, she thought that was it, that they were both done for. Larksong looked on the verge of passing out, there was no way she could run. Maybe, just maybe, that was it for the both of them. Ravenpaw bunched up her muscles. She never wanted to go down so soon, it would have been nice to have earned her warrior name before she met StarClan, but there was no way she was going down without a fight. The she-cat was near ready to strike again when she heard a sharp caterwaul at the edge of the clearing.

Her heart leaped up into her throat. A patrol! Smokestripe and Shadewillow, Blazepaw, old, stinky Mudfoot, and even her brother, Swiftpaw! She could have cried out in relief then, but there was no time. She sprang out of the badgers reach as one after another, her clanmates dove after the badger. Driving it back.

"Piece of fox-dung!" She shouted at the creature. It would regret ever stepping foot into ShadowClan territory. Soon as she had the opportunity, Ravenpaw slashed her paws out, aiming for the creature's shoulder.

Ravenpaw used 'Front Paw Strike' on Badger-kun, costing 10 stamina and dealing 6 damage.

The badger was in the middle of trying to wipe the mud from his eyes when attacks came from all directions. Claws slashed at its pelt and bodies rammed into it. It roared in a mix of anger and pain, stumbling backwards as it glared at the cats that surrounded it. For a second, it thought about fighting but quickly decided that it wasn't worth it. It spun and lumbered away, wishing to live another day.


Smokestripe sighed in relief as the big creature lumbered away. He would have to inform Thrushstar about this - they would have to keep an eye out for it encase it decided to stick around on their territory but there was more pressing matters at the moment. He spun to look at Ravenpaw in worry as he studied her. She looked to be fine, no damage done and while he wanted to ask her to make sure - he knew Larksong was the one truly in danger. He hurried over to the fallen she-cat, worry prickling at his pelt. She wasn't moving...Was she...? No, he caught the rise and fall of her chest and as he drew close, she moved her head slightly to look at him.


"Smoke...Stripe?" Larksong coughed, surprised to see the warrior standing over her. She was relieved to see that help had come and tried to weakly push herself to her paws only to fall once more. Her head was dizzy and she knew that they needed to bring her back to camp quickly so that Honeydrop could take a look at her. "Is...Ravenpaw...Alright?" She had to hope that the apprentice was fine - she swore she had heard her voice.


"Ravenpaw is fine," Smokestripe soothed, shifting on his paws. "And so will you, we'll get you back to camp and Honeydrop will fix you right up." He blinked, trying to hide the worry in his eyes as he glanced over his shoulder. "Mudfoot! Shadewillow! We need to get Larksong back to camp now!" He called out to the other warriors. He wasn't sure why the Larksong and Ravenpaw had been out of camp by themselves at such a time but there wasn't any point to ask. Right now, they needed to worry about Larksong.

Relieved that the badger had been driven off, Mudfoot rushed over to Larksong. "You're going to be fine, we'll get you back to camp," the tom meowed to his sister. Giving a nod to Smokestripe, the warrior grabbed the she-cat's scruff ready to drag her back to camp. Though she was a bit heavy to drag, he wasn't going to let a little weight stop him from saving his clanmate. "Welb de back to famp woon," he mumbled through a mouthful of fur.
