Birds of a Feather [Ravenpaw's Hunting Assessment] (Closed)

Larksong poked her head into the apprentice den. It was so cramped, she was so happy that she was no long an apprentice mostly at her age. All to eager to help her Clanmates in any way she could, she had decided to help her nephew Waspstep by taking care of his apprentice's assessment as he had been busy these last few nights. She moved as carefully as she could around the sleeping cats until she found the black apprentice and gently poked her away. "Ravenpaw?" she whispered. "I'm taking over your assessment for Waspstep, come along." She quickly turned and left the den without waiting for the apprentice, settling down near the entrance of the camp.

The black she-cat grumbled as she was stirred out of her sleep, raising her head groggily and gazing up at the shape above her. She'd expected to see her mentor, or Mudbutt, or anyone who was normally sent to deal with her - but instead she picked out the scent of Larksong in the darkness. "Ah, I'm up... I'm up..." Ravenpaw nearly whined under her breath, stretching her limbs and dragging herself out of her warm comfortable nest. The sharp chill of leaf-bare had snapped her out of her daze the moment she stepped outside, dismissing it with one final nod and padding up to the entrance.

"My... assessment...?" She muttered. It had taken a moment to hit her. "... My assessment! Now? Where are we going to have it?" Please don't say Carrionplace.

Larksong smiled from where she sat as she saw Ravenpaw come dazing out of the den, the cold waking her up along with her finally putting together what she had been awoken for. She purred as she stood up,  motioning for Ravenpaw to follow. "We are going to use the territory in general for your assessment," she said as she scanned the swamp. "This way you have a large area to hunt." After a while, she came to a stop and turned to look at the apprentice. "You need to catch three pieces of prey of any type. I will be watching you from the shadows to judge your progress and once you have caught all three, your assessment will be complete.

Ravenpaw's eye brightened, shaking the nervous chill off of her pelt and setting off, mouth wide open to catch the scent of any prey.

She'd caught the scent of frog on the air, but little too late. It had already leaped off into the pond before she could get into proper position. "Mousedung," Ravenpaw hissed under her breath. Hunting was never her strong-point, and she had the scars of rat bites to prove the mess she could drag herself into it by trying, but there was no way she could become a warrior without picking out something. If only she weren't so left-footed, or if it weren't the middle of leaf-bare...

She took in a deep breath, continuing her search.

Out of the corner her eye, she spotted a toad, but far too off and already retreating deep into the grass. Irritably, she dug her claws into the damp earth, padding off in search of more food. The warrior was out there, somewhere, watching her. She couldn't just sit around and wait for the prey to just jump into her paws, right?

She spotted the same toad from before, quickly hopping out of the corner of her eyes. In a rash decision, she had made a silly dive for it, watching as it easily leaped back into the tall grass and out of her reach. The only thing she got out of it was a nose-ful of mud. "StarClan, you're laughing at me right now, aren't you?" Ravenpaw grumbled under her breath.

Finally, she was able to catch the scent of a little frog nearby. It was a tiny thing, but hey, food was food, right? She did her best to keep herself composed, crouching down low and spreading out her paws to balance better on the slick dirt. Once she was finally close enough, the she-cat made a leap of faith, catching the frog between her paws and ending it's life with a swift bite to the neck.

"Thank StarClan!" She smiled. Perhaps StarClan had been watching and laughing after all. She showed them! Or, they took pity on her. She'd been so excited about her catch, she'd nearly forgotten to bury it before she moved on.
