A Patrol for the Bored [Closed]

Mudfoot padded over to the apprentice den, and pocked his head in. "Speckledpaw, get up,"  he meowed softly and exited the den. He thought it would be fun to go on another patrol, hopefully with Leopardfang and Frecklepaw too.

IC: Frecklepaw stuck her head out of the apprentice's den. "Can I come on your patrol, Mudfoot?" she asked respectfully. She knew Mudfoot was the warrior that Leopardfang respected most.

Mudfoot turned his head around, hearing another voice. "Of course you can, the more the merrier, right?" The tom chuckled with a smile.

Speckledpaw silently padded out of the apprentice's den and over to the group of cats, nodding to Mudfoot and Frecklepaw.

Leopardfang left the warriors' den, face grave and steps light. He nodded to Mudfoot, then turned to look at the two apprentices. He recognized Speckledpaw as his granddaughter but didn't say anything. "Are you ready?" He asked the group with a deep meow. "We have a schedule to keep."

"Yes, let's get going," he meowed, padding out of camp. He understood that Leopardfang was deputy and had duties to fulfill, but he wondered if the older tom ever had ever laughed and enjoyed a day patrolling before. Then again, what ever that tom did to get respect clearly worked, for Mudfoot always felt somewhat nervous when around him. Giving his fur a shake, he tried to shake away the thoughts and focus on the task at hand. "We'll patrol the borders first, then do some hunting practice," he suggested as they neared the borders. A lot of weird stuff had been going on between the clans and rouges recently, and he hoped they didn't run into anyone that they'd need to fight.

"Okay" speckledpaw mewed in in reply to the idea as they walked into the territory.

Frecklepaw nodded; it sounded like a perfectly reasonable idea. She wasn't one to manifest her enthusiasm widely, so she was content to trot alongside her mentor in companionable silence.

"Sounds like a plan. Should be quick and hopefully painless." Hopefully, of course, assuming that no one crossed their borders, took their prey, or anything else of the sort. Leopardfang stopped short of the WindClan border along the Thunderpath. He gave the typical lecture about not crossing it because it was dangerous and regaled the young apprentices with stories of cats who got hit by monsters and died or were unable to finish training."Now, tell me what you know of WindClan. It's best to know our enemies, or those who may be our enemies in the future." The deputy knew that most kits overheard stories of the other clans in the nursery, so Leopardfang was never surprised when new apprentices had at least some knowledge of them. However, sometimes they were exaggerations and he had to make sure that they knew the truth and not silly stories.

Listening to their conversation, Mudfoot padded over to the border and marked it in several places. Might as well kill two birds with one stone, right? After he finished, the tom made his way back to the apprentices to see how they were doing with the deputy's pop quiz.

Frecklepaw nodded thoughtfully. "Well, they're known for being blood purists. They won't let any other cat into their Clan. Or at least, their old leader was like that." The ginger flecked she-cat remembered a conversation with Shimmerheart, the elder. "Their leader now is waaaaay more peaceful. I dunno about the deputy." She looked anxiously up sat Leopardfang. Maybe he wanted more general information?

Speckledpaw folded her ears back at the need to speak, seeing as it was difficult for her. But it was needed so she would try her best. She took a deep breath before saying, "They are very fast and agile... They live on the moors..... They were recently very aggressive towards Skyclan...". She took a deep breath and sighed as she finished her statement.

The spotted tom listened to the apprentices without expression and nodded when they were finished. "Yes, good. It's always good to know the relations the clans have with each other so that we may know the best action for our own clan. It's also important to know about the cats themselves. They are indeed very fast, and are also the guardians of Highstones. In ordinary times, the leaders and deputies would travel through WindClan territory to share tongues with StarClan, though that is not such a common occurrence now that... things are different." He didn't want to scare the young apprentices, so he was reluctant to tell them that their fabled ancestors weren't present. It didn't worry him much, however, as he didn't really believe they existed. The only other cat who knew that was Thrushstar. But he understood why cats would want such a symbol of comfort, so he let others believe as they wished. Leopardfang turned and moved on in hopes of reaching the next border quickly.

"Things are different?" Frecklepaw asked in a quavering voice. StarClan had always been there! "What do you mean, Leopardfang?"

Mudfoot didn't want to interrupt their conversation which seemed to be going pretty well, so he decided to wait. Besides, no need to ruin the momentum, the apprentices were doing really good with answering Leopardfang's questions, though he was also curious as to what the deputy said about things being different.
