Skunkpaw Was On The Wrong Path (Close)

The first time out of camp was bitter and a blessing in one. While the enjoyment of being out of camp brought him happiness, his dissapointment from not becoming medicine cat gave a blanket of depression over him. Was he not good enough because of his paws? How could he even be a warrior if he couldn't walk right? Neutrally, he followed behind Ashwing as she led him out of camp. They were headed to the gorge and then the rest of the territory for his first patrol.

Ashwing looked at the gorge, shuddering. It had claimed the lives of so many. "That's the gorge there," she told him. "You can see it if you want, but stay as far away from the edge as possible. "

She didn't warn him in time. As he lumbered to look at the edge, his big paws stumbled over a rock in his path that he had not noticed. He squeaked, regaining his balance in just enough time for the edge to crumble, giving away under his front paws. With a wail he fell forward, tumbling tumbling in a single screech. About halfway down his claws managed to grip a ledge. "Help me Ashwing!" he cried in desperation, his claws seering with the pain from holding him up like that. Fear was all he felt as he dangled over furious water.

Ashwing gasped in horror as her apprentice slipped. She rushed over and tried to grab hold of him. "Hold on, Skunkpaw! " she yowled in fear.

"Ah! Heeeelp!" Skunkpaw screeched as one paw gave way. He was there, dangling by one paw. At the edge of his eyesight, he saw a blurry form. You were on the wrong path, Skunkpaw. whispered the cat. What did it mean? Was he meant to be a medicine cat? Or was he always meant to die? Did they mean a physical path? He wouldn't ever know. His last paw slipped, and he fell back in silence, staring up at the sky, mouth parted slightly.

Ashwing screamed as Skunkpaw fell. The blood of yet another cat on her paws... She was a horrible mentor. And a horrible deputy. She fell to the ground, tears sliding down her face. How could she let this happen? She hadn't gotten to know the young tom well, but she had sensed his spirit, his intelligence, his will to learn... And now he was gone forever. Why, StarClan?

IC: Ashwing, after crying herself out, looked for a safe way into the gorge to retrieve the young apprentice's body, still saddened. What would Sablestar think?

As Skunkpaw hit the water, his spine snapped. He didn't feel anything. Just died in silence that could only be death. His body was thrown mercessly through the water, slammed against rock after rock, shattering bones. It would have been painful if he was still alive.
