Leafpaw's Assessment

Reedstar dug his claws into the soft earth outside camp. Torrential rains lately had made the soil loose and damp, and each dawn he woke up to a downpour or a wall of mist outside. RiverClan dens, thankfully, were all woven air-tight so no water could enter. He'd heard that the other Clans were not so fortunate, and they had little more than wild bramble bushes to cover them as they slept. Yet he still didn't feel glad or lucky. H missed the feeling of being surrounded by his Clanmates. He'd grown distant from them, in more than one way. They no longer treated him as Reedheart, their fellow warrior, they treated him as Reedstar, their ruler. Every conversation was formal, serious, and deferential.

He sighed, and his breath billowed in the cold air. It was only the solace of cold early mornings like this that kept his melancholic thoughts away. Leafpaw was nearby, he knew, beginning her hunt. The leader would leave to watch her soon, but for now he just watched as the world began to wake.

Leafpaw was glad, she had already caught a thrush- which never always showed up. She smelled fish by the river- Two to be exact- and smiled as she went over to catch them. Licking her lips, she shot her paw into the water, hooking both fish.

Leafpaw hissed as both got away, but she smelled a water vole close by. Turning, she saw it scuffling in the rocks. Creeping up, she did the formal hunting routine.

Leafpaw muttered to herself, and sniffed the air. There wasn't any prey out- except one thing she pin-pointed easily. It was the rare occasion that now, a rabbit had came across. She looked in it's direction, and saw in munching on the grass. On silent paws, Leafpaw hoped to get it. She slipped right behind it, and leapt for it. Her claws only a heart-beat away from fur.

Surprisingly, the white furr-ball hadn't escaped in time, as she had killed it with a swift killing scratch. Her eyes showed pride, as she knew this would feed quite a few warriors, elders, or queens.

Dragging the large rabbit over to a safe place, Leafpaws' ears twitched when she heard scuffling. It was another vole, but it wasn't alone. There was another right beside it. Leafpaw hoped she could get two for one, but it may not happen. Swiftly, she crept up, but one had darted away, only to return a couple of heart-beats later. She came up, to the point where she was literally standing over them, and with unsheathed claws, grabbed them, tossing both into the air.

One had died with a shrilling squeak, but the other lay there, slowly inching away. Using this to her advantage, Leafpaw came, and with sharp claws, dug into the rodents' fur.

This time, she felt her claws rip through muscle, and pierce its heart. Dragging it over with her rabbit and other vole, she counted her prey. Three... Should I get more?

"Well done." Reedstar mewed from behind her with a twitch of his whiskers. She'd put on an impressive display with her hunting skills. "That rabbit could feed the whole nursery. Let's take these back to camp, and get rested. You'll be having your vigil tonight."
