this week on keeping up with the dawnspawn [c]

ooc: decided to make this a hunting patrol so it can be a double req for those who need it :)

ic: As oblivious as he was, there was some very obvious tension going on with his immediate family that even Brackenpaw couldn't miss. They'd never exactly been the image of a perfect happy family, well actually they'd been very far from it, but they were clearly at an all time low for their dysfunctionality. It seemed that for once it wasn't his fault, which... was relieving. He guessed whatever had happened was more than likely the culmination of all the massive changes that heralded his return. When he returned he'd hoped, if all his siblings had survived, there would have been some sort of party or celebration but... The family patrol he'd begged them into going on would probably be the closest he got to that.

A sigh escaped him, and he leaned against Honeydew "Everyone's grumpier than the badger I fought up at Highstones," he whispered to her, with a low chuckle. His eyes glanced from Falconmoon and Shatteredsky who wouldn't even look at each other, Shatteredsky's movements extremely pointed. Blue orbs then fell to Harespring who just seemed sad, and was also avoiding Shatteredsky, and even Honeydew didn't seem particularly happy. Brackenpaw frowned, he just wanted to spend time with his family, it had been moons, but they could hardly look at each other. How was he the only one who didn't have any form of quarrel? Was he the mature one now? Maybe they all needed a vacation from the clans as well, where they were forced to hang out with each other lest they wanted to die. He couldn't deal with this any longer, a frustrated growl rose up in his throat.

"Enough!"

"You're all acting like moles caught in the sunlight!" he huffed, pelt bristling as he stalked through the patrol. "I don't know all the details of what happened, as I wasn't here, but this is beyond miserable. Can't you just get along for a few hours?" Bracenpaw scrunched his nose up, tail lashing. Did he have to play mediator here? "Let's have a hunting competition, that way we don't even really have to spend time with each other, while technically hanging out. Plus, if you win you get to stick it to whoever you beat, doesn't that sound a little appealing?" He glanced hopefully between his siblings and father, giving Honeydew an especially pleading look. If she joined in surely the others would follow, plus she could also just pull rank as deputy and make them participate in his game. "We'd also be helping SkyClan, it is like a win, win, win situation."

OOC: I tried to figure out how to best even out the stats for the mock battle at the end of this topic, but ultimately decided that it would be more fun to focus more on character development instead of even stats. name. uwubers timezone. EST discord. @ uwubers code.kiikko

Falconmoon was content to keep quiet and listen to his kits talk for now. His eyes and ears focused attention on one kit, then another, then the next. He padded along, calm and content for the time being. Shatteredsky's outburst from the post war meeting was a fuzzy, distant memory at this point, and he had no grudge or grief toward Shatteredsky for it. He watched Honeydew organize a hunting competition and nodded once, calmly, at her instruction. She may have been much much younger than he was, but he understood and accepted rank.

"Easy enough." He responded, but Shatteredsky had to be difficult, as always. His ear flicked and he barely stifled an eye roll. This boy sure is dense... Falconmoon thought to himself, but held his tongue. He instead looked at Honeydew expectantly. He'd see how she handled this. If it looked like she was needing assistance, he would step in, but only then.

Harespring had followed along with the rest of his siblings. He didn't really want to be out here, at least with Shatteredsky. The tom didn't deserve to be around the deputy, especially after his threat to Wolfblossom. It was only a matter of time till he snapped and hurt someone within the clan anyway. He didn't know why the tom had such a fascination with their sister, but whatever it was it was detrimental to everyone in Skyclan. And then came the "bonding" idea by doing a competition. He wasn't entirely pleased with the idea, but at least he didn't have to go back and potentially see Sunfire, or be on Shatteredsky's team.

"Oh but it's already been considered dear brother. Besides Honeydew is deputy now, when she gives an order you have to follow it." Harespring couldn't help but sneer. "But I guess I could always take your place, then maybe I would gain favor with our dear sister. Plus Father has the most experience out of all of us, it would be an easy win on our part." He said with a shrug, a smug smile on his maw. He was going to push all the buttons he could today, knowing if he irritated any one of them at some point he would consider it a win.

Since when had Honeydew been so big on fighting? Brackenpaw blinked in surprise, but made no move to object. Spars were fun, he use to spar with Shatteredsky all the time, this would be like old times and it'd be good to see where his siblings were - Harespring especially. Brackenpaw was moving to voice his support, but before he could Shatteredsky was already loudly voicing his discontentment. Couldn't he suck up hanging out with their father? Maybe if he saw how capable Falconmoon was his opinion would change. Once again, the apprentice opened his mouth to clap back at the stubborn tom, but his other brother stole the words right from his mouth. It was like they were connected, until he started messing with Honeydew's idea. "Uh, no." he mewed, eyes drifitng to Harespring "Honeydew already decided the teams, lets not mess with them. Even with his experience I don't think father could beat all three of us and Honeydew's on our team...You know the deputy, on our team. The brindled tom turned back to his family "Maybe Shatteredsky doesn't want to join in the competition as he's scared of losing to an apprentice." Brackenpaw raised an eyebrow at his sour-faced brother, then yawned. "Okay, I'm going hunting so I can win sooner. You moles can stay here and bicker if you want." With a flick of his striped bushy tail he bounded away from the group.

Once far enough away from their little gaggle, Brackenpaw slowed his pace and zoned in. Being away from so long her really wanted to prove himself, that he was just as capable as everyone else even if he was still an apprentice. He felt certain they all thought he was a bit useless, but now he had a chance to prove himself and he would deliver. Further downstream, he spotted a hare. Funny. He could bring his brother's name sake back, and they were notoriously hard to catch. He just needed to the element of surprise -which he had- and to be faster. Brackenpaw grinned as he exploded into action, chasing down the hare with an incredible pace. The tom bowled over the rodent, slamming it into the ground, with a paw to the neck holding it in place as he delivered the killing bite. He was quick to bury his prize and move onto his next target.

It didn't take him long to spot his next piece of prey. A bushy red tail poking out of a bush, completely unaware of his presence. Sometimes prey were so stupid, a squirrel that wasn't paying attention and was hanging around on the ground. Brackenpaw rolled his eyes, tensed then punced, ending the creature with a swift nip to the neck. He dropped the limp squirrel to the ground ready to bury it, when he heard a hissing sound.

Brackepaw let out a surprised squeak as his blue orbs met with serpentine eyes. "Hey!" he hissed loudly Fox off, snake this is my squirrel." The apprentice let out a low growl tail lashing. The snake obviously being unable to understand, just bobbed its green body back and forth, rearing up in attempt to threaten the cat. You look stupid." Put off by the slippery reptile, Brackenpaw smacked it repeatedly, claws sheathed, but enough to leave it thoroughly concussed. Realising the cat wasn't going to back off the snake slithered off. Maybe he should have killed it to earn more points, but he needed to save some of his energy for their planned spar. Panting, and deciding best to return to where he split off from his family, Btackenpaw picked up the squirrel and grabbed the hare. He placed them in a pile and waited for the others to return, hopefully Harespring were more successful than he was.

"Wow, can't even understand what I say. I knew you were always so dense Shatteredsky, but then again you don't ever listen to anyone but what your own stupid brain says. Not even your own sister without her reinforcing her wants." Harespring scoffed out before turning to go out on his own to hunt. He didn't want to be out here.. His family was a mess. That much was clear. With a sigh the tom focused down on hunting.

The tom was quick to catch a rabbit, something uncommon in the territory. He thanked the stars he managed to have skill for once in catching this piece of prey. Next up was a bird. A simple robin. Nothing special but it was better than nothing. After he made sure the others were buried he attempted to catch a squirrel but the loud squawk of a raven spooked it away. With a sigh the tom returned to his siblings, catches in his maw. The steel eyed tom sat away from the others, desiring nothing but to be away from them.

Falconmoon stared at them all, looking mostly tired but slightly amused as well. He was too old to get into a tongue wagging contest with any of them, but he was content to just listen anyway. "Well for your sakes I hope you are all superb hunters." It was all he was going to say and gave a playful smirk over his shoulder as he turned away to go hunt. Falconmoon ignored the birds and squirrels, as they were easy prey and most Skyclan cats could catch them. No.... he was going to see if he could still tap into that ancient Windclan cat training he had so so long ago. Even before that, he'd been good at catching rabbits...

How about now?

Falconmoon tracked down two rabbits and a hare in his venture... and he did a combination of attacking from branches as well as flying across the landscape as fast as his paws could carry him. His legs pumped and his feet were practically aflame. He would either win big or lose hard. It was all he knew.

Falconmoon hunting, in this order:

Of course it had been too long to really remember the Windclan tactics well enough to catch fast rodents... but the eagle had also missed the rabbit so whatever. ... Oh foxdung... an eagle... He thought when he realized that he should probably just leave aaaaand nevermind the eagle decided cat was delicious too. Falconmoon sighed, loudly... then engaged the predator knowing full well he could not escape the wings of an aerial predator.
