Birdstar
The fresh snowfall from earlier in the morning glittered under the weak afternoon sunlight. Birdstar had to squint slightly just to face it, otherwise the bright refractions made her head begin to pound. She stood in the low boughs of a thick old tree in their temporary camp, a place which had become their gathering spot for now. Having to name a warrior now felt... odd. There felt nothing worth celebrating in this season of sickness and fear. But just to spite her pessimism, reason to celebrate came, even if the relief was only fleeting. Inhaling wheezily, Birdstar called out, "All cats old enough to climb the trees, gather below me for a Clan meeting," and searched the faces of her Clan for the apprentice she would soon call on.
Harepaw didn't quite feel like he belonged among the crowd. Despite being named an apprentice not that long ago he felt like he was still stuck in the medicine den, not allowed to do much. His body still felt weak, not as weak as he was but still weak. Did he really deserve a spot among warriors? The tom sat at the back, wrapping his tail around his paws, crouching low. Not really wanting to be see by others too much.

The day had come, he was sure. As sure as the day he stepped forth to become an apprentice. Warriors tend to gossip amongst themselves, and with such a large Clan all it took was to listen carefully to get the latest news. Shatteredpaw knew that his skills were up to expectations, and that there would be no point in holding him back in the apprentices den. Not when so many of their warriors were still sick. The tabby settled down near the front and turned his cool gaze up to Birdstar.

Mintglade hadn't been far behind her apprentice gathering to Birdstar's summons. She'd been more than proud of how hard he had trained, always there to meet or even exceed her expectations. With her tail twitching happily, she gave Shatteredpaw a massive grin before turning to also look at Birdstar expectantly. If they ever met gazes, she'd tip her head in confirmation. She certainly felt her apprentice was ready.

The Clan wasn't long to gather under her call. Birdstar noted Shatteredpaw first, as he came straight to the front of the crowd and looked towards her with expectancy, though she spotted his brother near the back as well. When her eyes found Mintglade amongst the present faces, Birdstar's eyes rested there for a moment, as if to ask her confirmation a final time. Privy to this silent want, Mintglade gave a nod, and Birdstar was satisfied. Returning her focus to the waiting apprentice, she raised her voice again. "Shatteredpaw, please step forward." Birdstar gave him a moment to do so, though he didn't have far to go, and another moment longer for the crowd to quiet fully. "I call upon our warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. He's trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend him to you as a warrior in turn." Birdstar bitterly thought their ancestors ought to do something more to help if they could listen in on warrior ceremonies, but when she coughed the thought was gone. "Shatteredpaw, do you promise to uphold the Warrior Code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?"

It was as he expected. Birdstar's silent question to his mentor was not missed by Shatteredpaw, nor was the satisfied glint in the leader's eyes once she got her silent confirmation. Almost immediately, he was called forward, and he stepped forward promptly. The ceremonial words were repeated, and though he found little meaning in them, he knew he'd have to pledge his loyalty, no matter what he personally thought. "I do," He confirmed.

Shatteredpaw took his place swiftly. He'd clearly been expecting this. There was no delay in answering, either, and Birdstar dipped her head at his acceptance of the vow. Eyes trained on him, she went on, "Then from this day on, you will be known to all as Shatteredsky. SkyClan honors your determination and bravery." Leaving the perch she'd claimed, Birdstar padded forward until she reached the new warrior. She refrained from moving close enough to touch, not wanting to trade or worsen the circulating illness, but Birdstar bent her head in a meaningfully prolonged gesture of respect. When she looked up again, she said, "Congratulations, Shatteredsky." Birdstar could muster nothing else to say, only able to give a hazy look of pride and grief for the circumstance. "Have a peaceful vigil. ...please. And rest well after." She nodded once more before stepping back to let others congratulate him.

Honeypaw
Honeypaw had arrived to camp just in time to hear the summons. She quickly dropped her bundle of moss off at the nursery entrance. I'll get to you later, she silently promised, and turned on a dime to race over to the crowd, settling herself next to her newly-apprenticed brother, Harepaw. Honeypaw's eyes lit up with excitement when she watched Birdstar approach the cat at the center... Shatteredsky!
Honeypaw cast a sideways glance at Harepaw and nudged him encouragingly. She could see that her brother still felt a little unsure, and she couldn't blame him after spending so much time in the medicine den. I'm just happy he's out here with us now!
She lifted her head and called out Shatteredsky's name as loud as she could! "Shatteredsky!" she yowled. "Shatteredsky!"
Afterwards, she padded up to her brother through the group of cats, beckoning Harepaw to follow her, and rubbed against Shatteredsky affectionately. "I always knew you'd be the first of us," she bragged, "You were the first apprentice, after all!" She gave him a friendly headbutt, her eyes sparkling, giving nothing away of the worry and doubt that clouded her mind. "And talk about the coolest warrior name out there! It's like you're destined to be famous."

Brackenpaw was in a foul mood today, nothing had been going his way. At Birdstar’s summons he made his way over to his siblings. He took a seat beside, Honeypaw gaze flickering to Shatteredpaw who looked more smug than usual. His temper began to rise realising this was Shatteredpaw’s warrior ceremony. Red hot jealousy coursed through the apprentice, and his blue eyes narrowed coldly. Brackenpaw sat silently as the ceremony continued, not meeting anyone’s gaze. Best to get another slight against him and his dedication over with.
He joined in as the clan chanted Shatteredsky, but his voice felt like it wasn’t his own, and he hardly realised he was following Honeypaw to Shatteredsky’s side. “Well done, brother.” he said coolly “At this rate you’ll be an elder before the next gathering.”

Where, oh where, had the time gone? She had thought that Falconmoon and Sunfire's apprenticeships had gone by in the blink of an eye. They had had each had kits... And it seemed as if it were only yesterday that Wolfblossom remembered curling around Falconmoon and Thornstalker's litter protectively.
And now the first of them was becoming a warrior. Wolfblossom sat among the crowd as Birdstar called the clan together, tail curling over her paws. A warrior ceremony would give them all a bit of respite from the doom and gloom, and it was a well-deserved one. Shatteredpaw seemed expectant, and his mentor seemed confident. All good things, Skyclan needed new warriors and their apprentices had been working hard despite everything.
"Shatteredsky! Shatteredsky!" Wolfblossom's voice rose with those of her clanmates in cheering for the newly named warrior. She was careful not to touch the tom as she stepped forward, still sick after all, but a purr rumbled in her throat as she spoke. "Well deserved, Shatteredsky. May your vigil be a peaceful one tonight." And with that, she turned... And gently shook her head at Brackenpaw. "Stars forbid." Cats younger than her in the elder's den... Truly a horrific thought.

Shatteredsky felt a slight flash of distaste when he was given his new name. Shatteredsky? Why would he be named after his Clan? He felt nothing for his clanmates-- in fact, the thought of ever rely on them brought a bitter taste to his mouth. He'd never be that weak or pathetic. Unless... Shatteredsky meant the shattering of the sky. That thought pleased him, and though he knew it was never Birdstar's intention to give such a fitting name, her choice had been "guided" by StarClan, so surely her oh-so-amazing ancestors must see the potential in him? Shatteredsky was also pleasantly surprised by his littermates greeting him. Honeypaw was as sweet as ever, and he gave her a fond look and would have nuzzled her cheek if it was not for Brackenpaw's words. Brackenpaw was always so easily jealous. Did he really think he was better than Shatteredsky? Well, two can play this game. "And at this rate, you'll still be an apprentice by then," He replied, tone just as cool, and eyes shining with a passive-aggressive light.
When Wolfblossom stepped forward, he dipped his head in greeting. Wolfblossom was the mother of their sire, Falconmoon, a tom he still disliked calling his father. Still, Wolfblossom had cared for them plenty since Thornstalker's death, and he knew how much she cared for them, so the least he could do was thank her for being here despite her obvious sickness. "Thank you," He replied simply.
Mintglade's whiskers twitched with pride as her apprentice, now former apprentice, officially was announced by his new name. Shatteredsky. There was no end to the pride that she felt in response to now having had an apprentice that had fully completed their training, and her tail twitched with that glee. Allowing other cats to approach first, the former mentor now came forward, giving a nod to the newly-named warrior. "You've definitely earned it, Shatteredsky. If you have any questions, don't ever hesitate to ask, alright? I look forward to getting to see you in the warrior's den." She beamed, giving a happy prrt~! before stepping away to allow others to once more interact with the tom.
