Cedarstalk

Gender: Male
Rank: T2 Warrior

Cedarstalk stumbled into the mostly empty camp, his amber eyes glazed over with pain. The adrenaline of his fight had more than worn off by now, leaving in its wake gut-wrenching pain that was enough to make the red and white tom nearly pass out. He held it together, though, afraid that if he fell asleep, he may never wake back up.

Grub had led him to the camp after helping him fight back the fox and Cedarstalk would be forever grateful to the mangy rogue for stepping in and saving his life. He wasn't sure if the other tom had followed and didn't look back to check. The fox had been young, foolish, but not weak. Its fangs had torn deep into his hind leg, severing the muscle and sinew from bone and rendering his leg basically useless. One of the bones in his lower leg was broken and after the arduous journey home, Cedarstalk was too tired to keep it off of the ground, leaving it dragging behind him.

A trickle of blood ran down into his eye from a gash on his forehead and the young warrior swung his head to the side, peering around from his other eye. Ah - there. He half-limped half-dragged himself in the direction of Fawnshine's and Echosong's den, breath coming in short, pained gasps. He remembered his moonstone journey, back when Echosong was a -paw, and hoped that the tom wouldn't think too little of him for getting into this situation.

What would Copperlark think? And Shrewpaw? Would they be worried? Would they miss him if he didn't make it? Cedarstalk collapsed after just a few steps, his leg crumpled painfully beneath him. The tom let out a wheeze, nose twitching as the metallic scent of blood filled the air. "H-Help-!" He called out, hoping to get some cat's attention if he hadn't already.

While he did worry for the red tom, a part of him wanted to finally see inside of one of these forest camps. Whether he was allowed to or not, he followed the mangled forest cat through the brambled entrance, still ready to catch the tom should he fall-

Until a warrior with a nasty scar on her face bolted towards him, a snarl the last thing he heard as he was forced to the ground, claws deep in his mottled pelt.

The call for help had Firefly on her paws in an instant, her first target being the scraggly tom that had followed Cedarstalk into the camp. "Fawnshine, Echosong!" A desperate cry for either of the ThunderClan medicine cats as green eyes stared helplessly at the mangled leg and gash on Cedarstalk's head. Stars... There was so much blood.

Acornstem's head shot up at the smell of blood that rolled into the camp - it was thick, heavy. It wasn't odd that a cat would return with a scratch but it was never this bad...And the voice that followed caused her heart to sink as she spun from where she had been double-checking the fresh-kill pile to see Cedarstalk standing - barely - in the middle of the camp.

There was another cat following her - but with the speed that he was pinned by Firefly...It was as if he didn't exist as her eyes were locked onto her blood-soaked apprentice. "N-No," she barely managed to breathe before she darted forward - her tail puffed as she rushed over to Cedarstalk. "No, no, no - you need to lie down, Cedarstalk. W-We need to get pressure on your wounds-" she started to ramble, drawing back on her paws as she lifted one but it hovered uncertainty as her tail lashed back and forth. There was so much blood, she wasn't where to start. His leg was...

Even if he survived, she wasn't sure that leg was- No, no he had to survive! He had to - he was. "E-Echosong! Fawnshine! Please hurry!" she cried over her shoulder, before she turned to nudge Cedarstalk to the ground. "Yo-You need to lie down, but you have to stay a-awake. St-stay with me, is that clear?" she murmured into his fur, already feeling the corners of her eyes prickle with heat and pain as she fought back to let himself see her like this. "Please, you need to be okay. I can't- I can't lose you, not when you are..." She pressed her head deeper into his fur, biting back a sob. "Please, my boy...Stay with me."

And did the twin flame bruise paint you blue?
"So you were never a saint and I've loved in shades of wrong. We learn to live with the pain, mosaic broken hearts."
Fawnshine had been just outside of her den, coming back from a recent herb gathering to replace the damaged herbs with newer, fresher ones. Though, before she could've made her way into the den—the sound of wheezing, gasping breaths calling out for help along with Echosong's name combined with her own echoed out in the air. Alarm set into her instincts rapidly, fur bristling in preparation for the worst. To hear her name being yelled out so urgently and with fear sent her head into a spiral, horror seeping into her veins. Still, despite everything, she forced herself to remain calm for the sake of the others at the scene. They didn't need more panic.

Darting in the direction of the injured Cedarstalked with a worried glance, Fawnshine felt her eyes widen, ears pulling back in dread at the sight before herself. His leg was torn—almost off completely. It was a wonder how such determination led the young warrior back to camp despite being in such a state of pain; she couldn't imagine how horrible it must've been for him. Blood was pooling everywhere onto the ground, following back where the tom had first limped into camp. Cats were quick to gather around the scene, the fear evident on their faces.

"Just pressure wouldn't do any good. He's losing too much blood." Fawnshine narrowed her eyes, setting the herbs she'd gathered from a quick run into the medicine den and back down on the ground. Thank the Stars for her decision of bringing back new herbs—she wasn't sure how they'd deal with such a disaster with the use of torn, or wilted herbs left in the den. The medicine cat was quick to get to work, gesturing for Cedarstalk to ingest the poppy seeds to dull the pain before she'd begin to treat his fatal injuries. Stinging nettle, comfrey roots, and bindweed. Chewing on the stinging nettle and comfrey roots to produce a poultice, she gingerly plastered it over his mangled leg and wrapped the cobweb around the area. Propping the leg up on sticks, she kept the area bound with bindweed to make sure it'd be elevated while still possible.

She knew the chances of him making it were slim. Very slim, in fact. Though being pessimistic would cause nothing but tension to rise, anxiety already high on her responsibilities and their similar, worried clanmates. Such a nasty injury wouldn't heal, not even with time or magic—this was the worst case she'd dealt with, given that she had already treated Mottlestar's similar wounds before. Though the difference between them was that their leader had lives to spare, and Cedarstalk didn't. The desperate cries of grief coming from Acornstem were enough for her to at least attempt to prevent the worst from happening.

Chewing up horsetail, goldenrod, and marigold into another patch of poultice, she spread it across the gash on his forehead, securing cobweb around the poultice to keep it in place and to soak up any excess blood that would manage to seep through. Now that the dire injuries have been treated, it was time to help soothe his shock. She offered Cedarstalk some thyme, hoping the herb and her careful licks between his fur would help calm his anxiety down from the brutal injuries for at least a while. He needed to be soothed before she could properly take him in to rest in her den.

"Can you hear me alright, Cedarstalk?" Fawnshine asked him, her voice careful yet with a hint of urgency. She needed a nod, a shake of the head—anything would be fine, except for silence. No response would automatically be considered a 'no'. "I need a cat to help carry him into the medicine den with me, please." She let his weight lean down on one side of her body as she rose, hoping to shift it so that the pain would ease, and he'd breathe a bit easier. If Echosong wasn't here, anyone else would do. She wasn't letting a cat die today.

The thick scent of blood hit her nose just moments before a familiar voice called out for help. Fear had rooted the apprentice in her place as she watched her closest friend stumble into camp a bloodied mess, his leg nearly detached from his body. Something caught in Shrewpaw's throat and for a while the young molly thought she would choke on it forever, but as the tears finally came the pressure in her throat went, and the paralysis was over. Golden fur flashed through camp as she shot to Cedarstalk's side. "Cedar?" Shrewpaw's voice trembled as she spoke. "Stars... What happened to you?" Gently the molly placed her head on Cedarstalk's shoulder. Tears mixed with blood as she sobbed into the tom's pelt. Cedarstalk was one of the strongest and bravest warriors she knew, what could have left him in such a state?

Shrewpaw hesitantly lifted her head and positioned herself to help move the warrior. He's fine, he's alive, he'll recover. The young molly repeated those words to herself as she tried to raise the tom gently, just as Fawnshine had. "You're gonna pay me back, Cedar. You promised me nothing would happen to you, you owe me" Though she tried to force a bit of lightheartedness in her voice Shrewpaw couldn't hide the fear that it held. Just a few moments at the tom's side and she was already covered in blood. The more she thought about their current situation the more she feared for the worst.

Cedarstalk

Gender: Male
Rank: T2 Warrior

Cedarstalk lifted his head weakly as Firefly shot past him and threw herself onto Grub. His amber gaze cleared for a moment, and he opened his jaws, protesting her attack. "N-No! He helped..." Dizziness made the red tom's vision swim once more and he let himself fall back to the ground with a thud. "It was...a fox" Through the pain, Cedarstalk tried to maintain a clear mind. At the very least so his companion wouldn't have to suffer - especially after helping him earlier.

He heard a familiar voice, though distantly, and sluggishly turned his head, some of the pain leaving his face at the sight of Acornstem. The young warrior managed a weak smile, despite the situation, and tried to push himself to his paws to greet her. He felt light-headed and woozy. What was wrong? Why was every cat so worried? His leg couldn't be that bad...could it?

At Acornstem's gentle prodding, he lowered himself to the ground with shaky limbs, feeling as though he was listening to everyone through moss-filled ears. He accepted his mentor's fussing and watched dimly as Fawnshine hurried over, herbs bundled in her jaws and concern evident in her gaze. He'd never seen her like that before - was his injury bad enough to warrant such a look of horror. He watched as the medicine cat pushed poppy seeds his way and wondered why he needed those. His leg didn't even hurt anymore - it was like Starclan itself had taken the pain and pushed it somewhere very far away.

Regardless, he lapped up the little black seeds and allowed his gaze to trail down to where Fawnshine was crouched by his hind legs. Bright red greeted him and Cedarstalk choked back a frightened sob at the sight of himself. Was that his leg? It couldn't be - there was no pain so why was he bleeding so much? Was that why everything felt so fuzzy and too bright? Cedarstalk tore his gaze away from the mangled flesh and peered up at Acornstem, fear seeping into his face.

As Fawnshine worked to save him, he let his head fall against Acornstem, pelt hot with shame. It was his fault this had happened. If he had just been a little more careful - if he hadn't gotten so caught up in his hunt...maybe he would have noticed that fox sooner. Maybe he could have avoided all of this if he had just noticed. He should have known better than to go out alone and stray so far from the heart of Thunderclan's territory. Perhaps this all could have been avoided.

Despite the pain that coursed through his body, Cedarstalk managed a shaky purr and nuzzled his face into Acornstem's fur, tears welling up in his eyes. For a moment, he thought he caught a whiff of his mother's milk-scent. Was that a glimmer of starlight or just the sun reflecting off of her fur? "M-Mom?" His eyes filled with emotion and the red and white tom buried his face into Acornstem's side. He never thought he'd see her again. Then, Fawnshine moved from his leg to his shoulder and the jarring, tangy scent of herbs hit him, pulling him out of his momentary confusion.

Cedarstalk looked up, his fur prickling with alarm, and silently cursed the hot tears that ran down his face. "I-I'm so sorry." Suddenly, Shrewpaw was at his side and Cedarstalk felt a warmth come over him, almost like lying in a bed of soft, dry moss. He smiled softly at the sight of her tears and leaned his head back, brushing his muzzle across her cheek in an attempt to comfort her. "Shrewpaw...you're here." He grunted in pain as she and Fawnshine lifted him to his paws and attempted to help him to the medicine den, pain glimmering in his eyes despite the poppy seeds he'd been given.

He forced out a laugh, albeit a weak one, as tears flowed freely down his face. He felt so warm and light. "You - you always know what to say. I'm gonna miss you." Some part of Cedarstalk knew that he wasn't going to make it. He resisted it for as long as he could, but each moment felt like an eternity. With every painful step he took, he could feel himself weakening. If it hadn't taken so long to get back to the camp, maybe he wouldn't have lost so much blood. Ultimately, it wasn't the broken leg or the torn flesh. It wasn't the pain or tiredness that made Cedarstalk drop to the ground. His legs folded and the red tom slid to the ground between Fawnshine and Shrewpaw with a sharp gasp.

Blood loss. If the bite had been cleaner, it might have closed somewhat on his own. If he had been scratched or fled back to Thunderclan the moment the fox let go, he might have stood a chance of making it. But as it was, Cedarstalk had lost too much blood. He could feel his limbs slowing down and his heart thumping as it desperately tried to pump too-little blood through his weakening body.

The young warrior didn't try to get back up, it would only shorten the precious few moments he had left. "C-Copperlark? Is she here?" He couldn't smell her anywhere in the camp, couldn't see her beautiful pelt in the crowd. Where was she? Despair flooded the tom's heart but seeing Shrewpaw and Acornstem alleviated some of the pain. Cedarstalk tried to lift his head, but quickly found everything to be too heavy all of a sudden. The poppy seeds did little to block out the pain at this point, but thankfully, they didn't need to. He felt numb to it. With his clan and most of his loved ones at his side, Cedarstalk suddenly felt more loved than ever.

"Acornstem..." His attention flickered to the deputy and a peaceful smile made its way onto the tom's face. "Y-You were like a mother to me...thank you...so much." He had to say goodbye. He couldn't leave them here with nothing to remember him by. They couldn't remember his last moments being filled with screaming or agony - let them remember him as he was in life - not like this. "Shrewpaw, you mean so much to me. K-Keep an eye on Copperlark...p-please." He wasn't sure if Shrewpaw knew yet that he and Copperlark were mates - did anyone? It didn't matter though, not now.

"I..." Cedarstalk's throat spasmed as he tried to speak and panic filled his gaze. No! He had so much more to say! He had to tell them that he loved them! They needed to know! But he couldn't deny the heaviness that seemed to cement his limbs to the ground or the sudden warmness that enveloped him. Looking up at their concerned faces, he knew he couldn't leave them. It wasn't fair! But...he didn't have a choice. Cedarstalk's eyes slid shut for a moment before he blearily forced them open. They looked so scared...they didn't deserve this pain. Suddenly, a certain sort of calmness wrapped around the young warrior. Through the fear and sadness, they knew.

Breath slowing, Cedarstalk allowed his eyes to close and accepted it. He was so tired of fighting...he had already prolonged it for as long as he could, there was no more resisting. The red and white tom found himself remembering his adventures as an apprentice and all of the things he still wanted to do. However, knowing that he would be reunited with everyone in Starclan, someday, made his sadness melt away. For now, he would have to be happy knowing that he would see his mother again. Not Acornstem, but his birth mother. There was so much he wanted to ask her, so much time to make up for - it would be okay.

He would always regret not getting to spend more time with these cats in life. Looking back, he would have done so much differently, but he would never regret dragging himself back to the camp to say goodbye. Cedarstalk's breathing tapered off into silence as he laid there in the middle of the camp, surrounded by his family and though he hesitated to leave them, the starry pelt of a she-cat appeared in front of him, a gentle smile on her maw. "Will they be okay without me?" He asked. "They will miss you...but they'll find a way." She said softly.

Cedarstalk nodded slowly, glad to find himself free of pain and unable to move without the weight of his mangled leg slowing him down. His pelt was littered with starlight, showing no evidence of what had killed him. It was so surreal...he didn't want to leave, but knowing that he would see them again someday, made it a little easier. The scent of milk and the nursery washed over Cedarstalk and he looked at the transparent she-cat, eyes glittering with tears. She nodded and with that, Cedarstalk left his body and the Thunderclan camp behind, following his mother into the sky.

Acornstem pressed herself against Cedarstalk as his head rested against her flank, paws pressing down on what injuries she could as Fawnshine arrived - giving orders before she disappeared to grab herbs. "It will be fine, you'll be fine," she murmured as she leaned down to give Cedarstalk concerned licks - before her ears perked as he managed to find his voice to explain that the tom that Firefly had tackled was an ally - it had been a fox that had...

She swallowed - was the fox alive? She would have to send out a patrol to make sure - to take care of it if it lived or deal with the body if it was dead...It wouldn't serve to leave it to attract another predator. As Fawnshine arrived back, with Shrewpaw not far behind, she turned her attention from her work and back onto her old apprentice. Her tail swished back and forth nervously as she waited before Fawnshine ordered them to bring the warrior to her den. The deputy was starting to rise to her paws when Cedarstalk spoke...Calling out 'mom.'

Her heart jumped to her throat as she looked down, unsure if he was referring to her or... If he wasn't... "Cedar-" she started, but her voice broke as she fought back a building sob as the warrior turned his fading attention onto Shrewpaw, apologizing - he was going to miss them. "Don't, don't say that-" she barely managed as she dropped back into a crouch, pressing her head against his side. Then, he said her name once he realized Copperlark wasn't about, causing her head to shoot up as she met his eyes.

He...He called her mother. Her heart shattered at that, realizing the truth of the situation. He...He was right to say his goodbyes - but why had he waited until now? "No, no Cedarstalk, please don't- don't leave me," she gasped, curling in on him even as his gaze turned to Shrewpaw to say a few more words before a spasm cut him off and he fell silent - still. A wail tore it way through the deputy's throat as she pressed herself even more against him, silencing her sobs by burying her face into his cooling pelt.

She had never meant - there had been so much she had wanted to say to him. He...he had called her mother - and she had always felt the same paternal bond in return. She should have said so sooner - she should have been there for him like she had promised. But she had failed and he was gone and she... She didn't know what to do - he had meant the world to her in ways she hadn't expected. And so she sobbed - for the cat that she knew and for could have been.

"So you were never a saint and I've loved in shades of wrong. We learn to live with the pain, mosaic broken hearts."
The quiet murmurs of conversation that Cedarstalk had to himself rang a small pang of pain over her heart. She knew things wouldn't likely be optimistic, yet having to see another one of their clanmates pass away so abruptly seemed painful even if she didn't know him quite well personally. Fawnshine frowned, flinching as Cedarstalk collapsed between her and Shrewpaw's sides with an exhausted smile. Seeing Acornstem's reaction alone made her have to force herself to glance away, unsure if she wanted to interrupt the bittersweet moment between them while their clanmate was on the brink of death. No such herbs could save him in this crisis, not even if she tried. It was a melancholic truth she knew many cats would not be able to accept.

"I'm sorry, Acornstem, Shrewpaw. I've already tried my best." Fawnshine shook her head and gently rested her chin upon Cedarstalk's still body, feeling the traces of warmth slowly leave his fur. She whispered quiet condolences to the tom, feeling as if his fate had been too cruelly decided by the stars to have been cut so short and leave behind feelings of part-resentment, part-relief. "May Starclan welcome you with open paws. You've been a great warrior serving Thunderclan until your last moments." She pulled her head back and allowed the others to offer their goodbyes to him.

EOh, look who it is! The boy savior
Echosong was out of camp when his name was called, he arrived late - too late. Panic rose in his throat and guilty, sickly thick bile rose in his throat as he watched Cedarstalk collapse between Shrewpaw and Fawnshine. He should've been there, he should've helped. He had been looking for peonies, to place on Peonylights grave, and he came home to another warrior dead. Angry tears pricked at the corner of his eyes as he watched Acornstem cry for Cedarstalk.

The tom suddenly had flashbacks of their journey to the moonstone, for the wonderful conversations they had and the brightness in the then apprentices' eyes.

Echosong pushed his way through the crowd and sat close to Acornstem, his tail curling around both her and Cedarstalk as he leaned his head to rest on her shoulder - giving her as much support as he could. If he could give up his life to bring back Cedarstalk he would. If only just to never see this kind of pain written on Acornstems face. She didn't deserve this. He should have been there to help.

Quiet people have the loudest minds

Too late. She was too late. She should have known that something was wrong, from the very moment the scent of blood hit her. She should have been there with him... this should never have happened. Copperlark stood outside the warrior's den, her eyes devoid of any emotion as she watched the still body. Had he thought about her, as he took his last breath? Had he blamed her for not being there when he needed her the most? What kind of mate was she if she couldn't even be there? Even Shrewpaw had come to his aid before her.

The pale tortoiseshell padded forward slowly to her mate's body. Her chest felt so tight. Was this what they meant when they said that their throats went dry as they cried? But she wasn't crying-- her eyes were dry. Had she ever loved Cedarstalk at all? Had this all just been a lie, a play with his heart like a kit plays with a butterfly's life? Suddenly, Copperlark didn't know how to feel about the dark ginger body before her. There was no grief, no horror, just a storm of regret. Regret for what?

She recalled her first lie. How it had stung her tongue and burned her body. She had said it to Cedarstalk, when they were just kits. She had been horrified by the lie... but had she been lying this whole time? The knowledge of what she knew, of what she had been meaning to tell Cedarstalk, weighed heavy in her chest. How could she continue this, when he had been the only source of comfort she had ever really had? She had been able to tell him everything... but in the end, maybe she was just dumping everything on him. "Please don't go," She whispered, so soft not even a mouse could have picked it up.

She wasn't sad that he had passed, she was sad that she had lost her source of comfort. How selfish, and yet... knowing that his death didn't rack her body with sobs gave her just the littlest bit of satisfaction. It felt like having control, more control than her fellow clanmates who were crying. Oh, how selfish she could be, how poorly she could treat her loved ones. She was going to be a terrible mother, that was for sure.

The tortoiseshell held back a laugh as she burried her face in Cedarstalk's still body. She would miss him, however horrible their relationship had been. The she-cat stood back, allowing a single tear to fall for her fallen mate, then turned and stumbled past her clanmates to head for the forest. She needed to clear her head, and she wasn't going to be able to do that with the father of her kits' body in front of her.
