Lighttail was a bit apprehensive as she took her apprentice out on patrol. She hadn’t had a proper hunt with Applepaw yet, and he was nearly a warrior! Somehow predators, Twolegs, and all manner of other problems always came up. Now, she walked with the ginger-and-white tom at her side, realizing with a bit of surprise how tall he’d gotten. “Do you remember the basics I taught you?” she asked as they reached the Pine Grove.

Applepaw walked beside his mentor, scoffing as she asked him such a simple question. Of course, he remembered the basics, what kind of mousebrain did she take him for?

"Of course I remember, that stuff's easy!" He boasted. "I'm practically an expert by now, Nightstar should just make me a warrior already. I bet I can even catch more prey than you, Lighttail!" He was silent for a moment as an idea struck him, his eyes already lighting up at the prospect. "Hey why don't we have a competition?" He suggested. If I win, you have to tell the other warriors that your apprentice is cooler than theirs, and if you win, I'll like, spend a whole half-moon on elder duty or something." Applepaw was admittedly not as confident as he seemed, after all Lighttail had been a warrior since before he was even born, could he really out-hunt her?

Lighttail couldn’t help but chuckle a bit. “Okay, fair enough. To be honest I think you and probably Sunpaw and Cicadapaw are all more than ready. I just have to be sure, as your mentor.” At his suggestion of a challenge, she tilted her head a little. “Are you sure this isn’t just because my brother is training your brother? You know what? Actually, bragging to Sablestrike might not be that bad. You’re on!” And with that, the silver cat began her hunt. The scent of mouse had her attention in barely a moment, and Lighttail set out after her prey.

It was an easy catch this time around. The mouse didn’t even have time to raise an alarm before she was upon it.

Applepaw dashed off, already planning his victory speech for when he would undoubtedly and awesomely win. He could picture it now, strutting into camp with enough prey to feed the entire clan, humbly accepting praise from his loving, grateful clanmates. The scent of vole caught his attention and he was on the trail in less than a heartbeat, nose to the ground as he tracked his first epic catch of the day. And what a catch it was! The poor creature didn't even have a chance to squeal before Applepaw had snatched it, ending it with a swift bite to the neck.

Lighttail was already on the trail of her next mark. A frog had come through here, and not long ago. Tail low and swishing just slightly, she stalked along the trail. It wasn’t long before her prey was in sight. With a rump wiggle, she made sure her pounce was angled just right and leaped.

Another easy catch, the frog instantly dead beneath her paws. The silver cat padded back to where she’d laid the mouse, head held high.

After carefully scraping some dirt over his vole to protect it from hungry scavengers, Applepaw began to look for his next catch. Soon he was hot on the trail of a lizard, his belly growling at the scent of his favorite prey. As he caught sight of the reptile basking in a weak beam of sunlight, the ginger tom stalked carefully toward it, setting each paw down carefully as to not alert it of his presence. After patiently waiting for the right moment, he darted forward, slamming a paw down on the lizard and killing it instantly. He hummed quietly to himself as he carried the lizard to the spot where he'd hidden his vole, already pleased with how well this was going.

The enticing scent of another mouse beckoned to Lighttail, and she once again dropped into the hunter’s crouch. Green eyes locked on her target, she crept ever closer. Secretly, she hoped Applepaw would win but she knew if she didn’t play fair he’d probably find out. He asked for a fair challenge, so he got one. Taking a deep breath, Lighttail pounced.

Lighttail’s fur stood on end at the sight that met her. Another predator struck at the mouse, only to drop it upon seeing her. A snake.

Lighttail attempted to bite the snake first, not wanting to risk injury herself if she didn’t have to. Thankfully, the bite landed (physical die rolled 1) and the snake recoiled in shock and fled, though it took its mouse with it.

Applepaw was certain he could make this last catch. He crouched in the undergrowth, green eyes fixed on a mouse. It had it's back to him, completely oblivious to the fact that it was being stalked. The catch couldn't have been easier if the mouse had leapt straight into his paws. However, it seems as if he wasn't the only one who thought so. He'd barely registered the faint flapping of wings from above when sharp talons closed around his ear, slicing through his flesh. He looked up to find an owl staring down at him, clearly annoyed that he was making an attempt on prey it had claimed for itself. He growled in frustration, reaching up to slash at the owl with outstretched claws. He'd been this close to winning, how dare this feather-brain ruin his perfectly good catch!


The owl used Talon Strike, dealing -7 dmg and -10 stm. Applepaw used Front Paw Strike, dealing -6 dmg and -7 stm
