Swiftheart sat there stunned hearing the decision of to kill Redice. She didnt like this idea all that much but she trusted that Nightstar knew what he was doing. She always had his back and it looked like his mind was made up on this. There wasnt really anything she could say or do to change his mind. But when the warrior who had commited this crime started singing?? She backed away a bit confused even more.

Her good friend Snowfoot was on the council and she seemed to agree that this Redice deserved what Nightstar had sentenced him to... as well as everyone else on the council appernetly.

Redice kept singing his made up song and she wished she could mute him how could he be this lost?

She sighed... killing anyone was not something she liked especially not a clanmate. But she did not forget the order that had caused so much pain for their clan... was killing him preventing something like that from occurring again?

But did they really have the right to kill him? He was shadowclan just like all of them, the blood of their own.

He had made a huge mistake but was he truly irredeemable? She didn't know. She was once again so glad it was not her decision to make. She would support Nightstar in whatever he decided and right now that looked like death for Redice.

She had only "killed" once ever in her life and that was a dark forest cat who was only half alive... so did that even count as a kill? She had just sent her back to the dark forest so not really. Killing was a pretty dark path one she hoped she never had to go down.

She didnt necessarly want to watch this execution but in case things got messy she was going, she would not risk Redice's escape because then he might come back to hurt Nigthstar or any other of her clanmates.

She wished there was any other option... maybe they could drag him to a twoleg nest and have the twolegs take him away? At least then Red could live but the idea that he could escape and seek revenge was not something she wanted either. Hmm maybe this was the correct move. But if they killed him were they any better than he was? Well at least Nightstar wouldnt enjoy killing him... right?

As far as she knew, Night hadnt ever killed anyone at all would it change him? She feared that it might for the worse.

"It seems he enjoys the idea of being murdered directly by someone else. I say we deny him this pleasure and go with a deathberry" she suggested

the true reason she perered this was she didnt want any of her clanmates to have to be the one to kill someone. A deathberry was a cleaner way to do this and if it denied Redice some weird twisted sense of pleasure in his last moments that was all the better

Watching Redice and Nightstar return to camp with a seemingly dead cat in tow had startled him—he was sure he wasn't the only one. Word got around that the cat was from Skyclan and his worry spiked up. What in Starclan's name happened out there? From where he was, he could clearly hear Nightstar order for Burdockroot to treat him. Huh? So, the cat wasn't dead? That had eased his worry somewhat. However, when the dark-furred leader summoned his council, Forestbreeze knew things were graver than he had originally anticipated. Only moments prior, the tone of which he spoke to Redice left little to the imagination. The russet-colored tom had done something and he was most likely to receive a punishment soon. The tom was decently sure Redice had done something to the Skyclanner. To him, it was almost glaringly obvious and he wasn't what he thought about it all.

Left to their own devices while the council plus Redice was left to discuss things, Forestbreeze began to occupy himself with whatever in-camp chores he had left to complete. However, before much could be done, he spotted Sablestrike entering the den. He paused. What was the warrior doing? He was not part of the council. Did he have other news to share? Unless it was urgent, he should know to wait for the council to finish their business. He surely hoped that the younger tom wasn't intending to wedge himself into the meeting. Now was not the time—not when things seemed so urgent and grim. Forest blinked and awaited for Sablestrike to be told to leave. Surely enough, not long after said tom had entered, he noticed a very-not-happy Sablestrike walk right back out. He sighed as the stubborn cat remained seated near the entrance to the den, not hiding his intent to listen in. Forestbreeze shook his head and then left to continue his work. Nightstar will tell them all soon enough.

Time seemed to drag on and it was slowly fraying the grey-and-white warrior's nerves. He occasionally shot glances at the den in hopes of seeing someone exit signaling the end of the meeting. His tense shoulders loosened when he finally saw Nightstar exit and his eyes trailed him as the older cat leaped onto the Jaggedrock. He frowned as he made his way over to the rest of the gathering cats. Nightstar was good at masking his expression and scent but Forest wasn't sure if he was actually as composed as he seemed to be. Well, it was time to hear about the situation.

The situation was more complicated than he had realized and no less than terrible. His face cycled through many emotions before settling on resignation. Redice. The tom had always been an odd fellow and Forest never knew what to make of him. He had rarely interacted with him and most of what he knew was from hearsay. Apparently, his fellow warrior was more skewed in the head than he had noticed. A sudden sadness that had no right being there struck his chest. Why did he feel such an emotion for a seemingly heartless individual? 'He was your clanmate.' came the traitorous voice. It was never seeing his clanmates—ex-clanmate in this case—in such positions. Forestbreeze dipped his head to signal that he had no objections. It was best to end the problem before it escalated. A pang of unease hit him at the mention of Dawnhawk and his brood. Yeah, it was best to end it as early as possible. They couldn't afford to keep such a cat alive. Redice would just do the same thing later down the line. There was no saving someone who thought in such a way.

When Redice finally emerged, he could now clearly see how deranged the younger tom was. His mouth was set in a grim line. Redice's singing and lack of remorse told the clan that putting the tom to death was clearly the best option. In fact, the mentally unstable tom seemed to be satisfied with the turn of events despite the general consensus that he was the clear loser of the situation. He briefly scanned the crowd before turning his attention back to Nightstar, Redice, and the rest of the council as they emerged. He spotted Iceheart and briefly shot her a troubled look before keeping his eyes on just Nightstar and Redice. Well, he never thought that he'd ever bear witness to a public execution but here he was.

Swiftheart's voice had caught his attention briefly. Was she hoping to relieve Nightstar from having to take an ex-clanmate's life himself? Yet again sadness washed over the large tom-cat. He had forgotten how difficult it would be for the leader to perform such an action. He wasn't sure Nightstar would change his mind but at least his sister had tried. The leader was lucky to have such a thoughtful sibling by his side.

Silverkit

He’d been in the nursery when the usual buzz of camp fell briefly silent, then turned into an anxious hum. A strange, sharp scent filled the air outside too. Meadowlark had gotten up from her nest as soon as the air shifted, but Silverkit stayed in his own nest a little longer, lazily batting at a feather. He hadn’t been expressly told to stay in the den, but he could tell he was supposed to. Still… curiosity got the better of him. Abandoning the feather, Silverkit pushed smoothly to his paws and padded out of the den.

He came outside in time to watch cats in and out of Nightstar’s den– a few of the council members slipping in, and one of the warriors that had been missing as well, though he quickly came back outside. Silverkit’s ears turned forward, but he couldn’t make out anything the agitated voices were saying. The tang in the air was stronger outside too, thick and metallic against his tongue. His nose wrinkled, and his head turned as he followed the scent until his eyes landed on Burdockroot’s den. Whiskers twitching, he tilted his head curiously to the side. Did something bad happen?

The uneasy whispers rippling through camp made it clear that something had. Silverkit was starting to pad closer to the crowd, wanting to eavesdrop, when out of the corner of his eye he saw Burdockroot leave just as the conversation in Nightstar’s den was growing louder. He watched her sweep across camp until she too disappeared to speak alongside the council members. Silverkit’s ears twitched downward and he picked up his pace, brushing past warrior’s legs as he hurried toward the bulk of the crowd. He wanted to know what was happening!

He’d just started really listening and putting together snatches of SkyClan, and looked like crow-food, and must’ve been fed carrion as a kit when Nightstar himself emerged from the den. Silverkit was still immediately, sole focus on the scarred tom. There was no usual meeting call; just a bark for ShadowClan’s attention and a breath before recounting what had happened. The longer their leader spoke, the further Silverkit’s eyes widened. Hunting a cat? But you were only supposed to hunt prey… the connection between the thoughts made his stomach knot. Rat bait? How?

Nightstar was going to kill him?

Silverkit blinked foggily. A few objections broke over the rush that went through the gathered Clan. Silverkit wasn’t sure what to make of the announcement. His mind spun from the shock of his first exposure to violence, even if he hadn’t seen the bloodied cat brought to camp. The cold feeling creeping down his spine was fear. It made a shudder pass through him that he couldn’t repress. There was something arresting about the feeling, though; he felt compelled to follow, to see Nightstar’s words through.

Nerves bundled in his chest at the thought. Glancing through the gathered Clan to make sure no one in particular’s eyes were on him, Silverkit ducked his head and shuffled away from the bulk of the Clan. He was aiming for the small group stood off to the side, ready to follow Nightstar out to watch his punishment. But just when he'd thought he was out of sight and could sprint the last few paces until he was hidden among them, a tail swept in front of his nose and his shoulder was being gently pressed against. He started to bristle until he realized it was just one of the familiar queens, who'd caught up to him and swiftly turned him around. She cooed something about how his mother would want him to stay in the nursery, to which Silverkit only snorted and chose to pad away of his own accord. He did scan the crowd for Meadowlark as he retreated, and he'd caught sight of her for a moment– easily walking toward the spectating party. Ears flat and tail dragging, Silverkit sat down heavily outside the nursery. He didn't disappear fully inside though; from his distant spot, he stared hard at Nightstar, at the cats slowly emerging from his den– at the mouth of his den, catching glimpses of red fur as a grating song started to echo from within. Hair rising, Silverkit snorted and returned his attention to their leader, keeping an expectant eye to watch him leave.

Echomist had kept to himself, with everything going on since the return and the council gathering to speak upon what Redice had done.. Well he wanted no part. He never cared for the tom, ever since his reaction during the flood of the camp. So he stayed away, continued on with his duties and if he did have to interact with the tom, he kept it strictly related to the task at hand and nothing more.

So when Nightstar spoke of the event, of the execution, Echomist just shrugged it off. He wasn't surprised in the slightest. He knew eventually someone would have broken, and they were just lucky to catch Redice when they did. It could have been worse. Yellow green eyes turned to his mate, taking in her appearance, noting anything that was slightly out of place. How was she dealing with this? Agreeing to it was one thing but making it happen was another.

The tom followed the crowd, not really interested in the execution itself. Just wanting to be there for his mate if she needed anything, anything at all.

A problem not easily solved (Open) - Page 3 Empty
PostSubject: Re: A problem not easily solved (Open)   A problem not easily solved (Open) - Page 3 EmptySat 11 Mar 2023 - 10:43

Silence suffocated the clearing for a few heartbeats, Shadowclan as a collective whole seeming to go through resignation, horror, and anger amongst other emotions. Cicadapaw spoke up, and his gaze snapped to the small she-cat, Marshmallow was quick to calm her but she deserved to have a response from him, "You will get a new mentor. A better one." He meowed plainly, succinctly before he turned his attention to the familiar tone of his sister. "This is more than just him. Swiftheart." He wanted to say more, that this was an example of not only what happened to those that broke the law and caused problems that risked Shadowclan, but that he was a strong and capable leader that would stand by his words and actions. Even if he was resolute in his decision, it still made him question his abilities.

But he'd be ruined if he didn't do this if any cat found out that he was responsible for another Dawnhawk because he had proven himself a coward despite all of his posturings, Shadowclan would be at risk if he didn't do this. His inaction wouldn't poison the clan he loved so much, even if he was going to kill a clanmate with his own paws, even if it went against every belief, standard, and conviction that Nightstar had built for himself. All the love that he had for his clan even if he did not care for much of them personally, killing Redice was going against all that. But it had to happen.

In the silence, a lilting sing-song voice started to come from his den, and he watched as fur began to bristle among the clanmates that were in the clearing. It had to end now, before he or any cat had some bright idea and brought risk to every cat by giving them a way out. Any path in which Redice lived, seemed to be the wrong one to him. "Then let us be off. Any cat that is coming will help ensure that there is no escape." Jumping from the jaggedrock Nightstar peered back into his den, giving a nod towards the entrance, it was time.

He was quick to direct cats to where they needed to be, a cat covering every escape route that Redice could possibly take - he hoped. He kept his head high, taking the lead in front of the funeral procession of a cat to be put to death. Never in a million moons did Nightstar ever think that he would be taking cats out to kill them, especially of his own clan. A sort of numbness rolled over the Shadowclan leader as he padded into the marshes, the sun high in the sky as the sunlight stretched through the pine canopy like claws, lighting up the dark puddles. His jaw grew taut as he picked out the location, the fences of the carrion place visible and not far. Redice wanted to make a cat into rat bait? Nightstar would give him the opportunity.

"Into a circle, please. Then you may release him." Padding into the inner circle, uncertainty once more slowing him but for a different reason this time. He couldn't let his puzzlement show as he regarded Redice, unsure of how to proceed, how to end his life. Nightstar knew how to kill, he was trained to do it, but without the heat and passion of battle he found it so much harder. "Redice has been found guilty of attempted murder and as such for endangering the lives of his clanmates. I, Nightstar, sentence Redice to death, to rot in the mud, and to be denied a peaceful afterlife with our ancestors." He barked, his paws beginning to lead him to the red tom.

"But I'll at least do you the favour of making it quick." Nightstar growled as he got close, closing the last of the distance in moments as he shot forwards, going for the throat as he wrapped his paws against the young toms shoulders, claws digging in as his teeth sunk into flesh and blood vessels. He tore at the skin as he twisted, hauling Redice into the muck beneath them, adjusting himself quickly to pin him. Jaws loosened and readjusted as he bit down again, grabbing as much as he could, crushing his throat under powerful jaws and a paw crept up to clog his nostrils and mouth - either he'd crush something or he'd suffocate to death.

The news of Redice's crimes reached Thalia's ears, followed swiftly by his sentence. Part of her felt some pang of sympathy, but the tom's voice carrying from the leader's den quelled that slight feeling of kinship. Still she turned from the cats who left ShadowClan's camp, remaining by the entrance to guard those who remained and prevent an escape. She wasn't a kit, she knew that turning away didn't mean it didn't happen; but however painless or painful it might be to watch she knew she couldn't do it.

It dredged up memories that were better left buried, sharp claws and red blood and her own choked sobs; the voices that haunted her in her sleep. Redice had earned his fate, but she wouldn't follow to witness it.
Leopardsun padded out of camp with the others, forming one part of the circle that surrounded Redice. It was important for a Clan to show unity, and this cat had proven a danger to her Clan- she would do what she could to keep the others safe; even feeling Echomist's eyes on her, it wasn't her own safety she was concerned with.

Leopardsun was no stranger to the violence of death, to the bloodshed that so often accompanied it. And yet something about Nightstar's assault came across as another level of brutality- perhaps because this wasn't a battlefield, perhaps due to his thoroughness.

But she been born into a world where the dead walk the earth, and it was with suspicion that she regarded the tom's form. Even knowing that the Dark Forest had been defeated, that she had done her part in that battle, she couldn't help but feel that he might rise to his paws anew. It was only her own paranoia, but she kept an unblinking eye on the cats before her.

(And yet she still couldn't help but think that a quick death was more of a mercy than he deserved.)

Swiftheart understood his answer as much as she regretted it.  She understood that an example must be set and that this was his burden to carry.  She followed along slowly watching redice carefully.  It felt like the seconds were hours as they finally got to the spot.

She was unfortunately no stranger to violence but on this otherwise calm day it all felt chilling.  She forced herself to watch as much as she wanted to close her eyes for it.  If her brother had to be the one to kill this traitor then she would force herself to actually watch.  She wouldn’t know what it was like directly and honestly hoped never to have to.  But she wouldn’t shy away and hide while he had to do this.  When he clawed into reds shoulder and went for the throat, she winced slightly but never turned away or closed her eyes.

He was crushing the young warrior and smothering him at the same time.  She thought about reds song much to her not wanting to.

Night was doing just that. There would be no drop left for red after this and it made her sick thinking about it. But still she watched.

Redice needed no restraints. He didn't need much of anything. He, on some level, was getting what he wanted. His facial expression never showed fear, not even as Nightstar announced to everyone that he was putting him to death. Redice grinned at Nightstar's threat before he launched himself at him. Redice surged forward, chin high, and rammed his own throat into the back of Nightstar's molars.

"There you go! Bite harder, now twist! Come on Nightstar... spill blood you coward! Take a life!" Redice's normally high-pitched, scratchy voice was now even more of both of those things with the pressure around his neck. Into the mud they went.

Redice's claws, all four sets, sought the veins on the insides of Nightstar's legs. Oh how easily those vital spots were forgotten and neglected. The jugular vein was not the only vein that was lethal to strike. Actually, bleeding from the arteries on the inside of the backs of the legs was a much faster death.

"It's not just the neck veins that go pop! He he! Its either you or me! Ha ha!" Redice's tail twitched in excitement as he dug his claws in. Pressure closed around his throat, silencing him. The red tom was still cackling silently, red foam forming at the sides of his mouth. Redice's eyes rolled slowly to the back of his head... and the tom's life left him.

His cackling smile still remained as he exhaled one final time.

It was amazing, really. Harriertalon held no hatred for anyone in this forest, and even though Redice was... Cleary insane in more than one way, she couldn't bring herself to hate even him. Pity him? Yes. He was born this way, to no fault of his own as far as she could see. It was a mercy kill for all involved, including the red warrior himself.

As she watched the cackling creep slowly gurgle his way into silence between Nightstar's jaws, Harriertalon didnt flinch. Ugly as it was, maybe it could prove a valuable lesson to everyone who showed up to watch.

You've done what needed to be done, Nightstar.

Well, that was disgusting was swifts thoughts as Red gasped his final breath as he bled out and laughed while doing so.

What a sick freak... perhaps it had been the right call for all of this?

Well it was over now as red was gone.

She felt sick watching this all unfold.

Badgermask was relieved of her siblings at her side, her ears slicking back at Redice's lilting voice - no regret or fear that he had been sentenced to death. If anything, he was...Enjoying it? The whole Clan seemed to have accepted the situation for what it was - all but Redice's apprentice which was...Understandable. As Nightstar quickly turned to signal his council to follow, she found herself rising to her paws and padding after him - not looking back to see if Moondancer or Harriertalon were following as well. Instead, she moved to stand close to her parents as they reached Nightstar's chosen location and was signaled to spread out. Her claws were digging into the ground as she took her spot, swallowing bitter bile as Nightstar leapt at the tom - easily adjusting the two of them until the leader's teeth met the warrior's throat - but even that was not enough to silence Redice as the tom tried to push Nightstar on, as if it was simply a game and not the moment before his life was to end.

But then Redice shifted - his claws digging into Nightstar's legs just before he gave one more craized cry and his head finally went silent and limp. Her eyes widen, breath catching in her throat as she stared at the leader - trying to tell if the warrior's claws had struck true.

Following his leader, and prisoner, outside of camp, Tigershriek took a spot in the circle. It only felt right to be a part of it, as he was a part of Shadowclan. Those who hadn't followed... he wasn't sure how to see them. Maybe they were just warriors who had already seen enough, maybe they wanted it to be more or less painful than it would be. As his mixed emotions were forced downward, Nightstar announced Redice's sentence to the stars, and it had begun.

It wasn't long, yet Redice had still found a way to be disturbing. A flash of claws from the sentenced tom caused an exclamation of "D-" from Tigershriek, before he silenced himself. His leader could take care of himself. Redice would die either way, no matter what wounds he caused.

Lifeless eyes rolled back into their head, and Redice was dead. The warrior couldn't help but feel sick, in some way. Yet there was another feeling, like he wished he could have done it himself. A vengeance? No, a duty, maybe. Golden eyes watched Nightstar, looking over his dark fur for injuries. He couldn't see any, but with fur so dark, blood wasn't exactly easy to spot.

Leopardsun froze in horror as Redice lashed out at the leader in his last moments. It was only his limp form, falling at last to the ground, that kept her from leaping forward to finish him off herself; what reservations she'd had for sentencing a Clanmate to such a fate were vanished in an instant.

"Nightstar-" she spoke quickly, unsure if he would follow suit- "are you alright?"

She kept her gaze on the lifeless cat before her, some small part of her wondering if- despite the uncaring stars; though they didn't shine here, under the blinding light of the sun- he would rise to walk again, as others had before him.

As she kept watch for any sign of movement, she started to consider the other things that would need to be tended to. There was no time to be wasted when another Clan's cat lay injured in their own medicine cat's care. "I'll be visiting SkyClan as soon as you'll allow me to leave. Now that the matter is settled, someone needs to let them know what has transpired- and that they have no need to come seeking justice for their comrade."

For a moment it felt to the black tom that he was the one being suffocated and choked to death, fur tickled the back of his throat as all his teeth clamped around the red toms flesh. Had Nightstar been the kind of cat to control how he looked since kithood, had he not constantly put effort into how he presented himself, tears would have come to his eyes. Whether those tears were from the feeling of suffocation, his clanmate's eyes were no longer a comfort at this moment but a source of scrutiny as he himself was killing one of them in could only be cold-blood. He was feeling his fear ramp up again, so much so that he didn't quite feel the claws on the inner parts of his legs, Redice's shrill voice loud and impossibly clear - and then there was nothing. -

Nightstar held still, however, heaving breath from the black tom's nostrils as he held fast to the tom's neck. Nightstar pulled away, slowly, blood staining the white on his nose red, and blood and saliva mixing and dribbling against the black marsh. Leopardsun approached him, every other cat at a standstill and he hardly had the faculties to hear her- but he was her leader, she needed his guidance right now - "Go-" He choked out, "make haste, lest there are issues." He huffed, doing his best not to heave.

"We'll leave his body here. Let him be what he wanted that Skyclan cat to be." Nightstar ordered, though now it lacked at least some of his typical conviction. It was now that he was slowly becoming aware of his body, feeling the hot trickle of blood from his front legs and all he did was look at the wounds with passivity that perhaps should have warranted some level of panic. "And where is Burdockroot?" He meowed, clasping one of his paws around one of the wounds.
