At Sablestrike's appearance in the council, Rookfire sighed. "If you want to know what's going on, Nightstar will tell the clan what's happening later. Please leave." Obviously, he spoke up about Leopardsun getting her nine lives, but Rookfire read it as him wanting the best for the clan with a missing leader rather than him actively hating Nightstar. Of course, many of the cats around him didn't think of it the same way, so his presence would most certainly be a hindrance rather than something that would help.

As Redice spoke about his experience, Rookfire scoffed. "A 'basically full' hunting pile grows sparse by the end of the day," he grumbled, though he let the red-furred tom continue. What did hunting for fresh-kill have anything to do with an injured cat, anyways? It's not like he went out to hunt for a ca-

...He did not.

Apparently, Redice thought that Nightstar was playing a game with him, that a simple command for hunting was code for killing a cat, and it seemed like his only regret was not finishing him off when he had the chance. "If you wanted to hunt exotic prey, hunt a fox or something, not a cat! It's not explained because it should be COMMON SENSE to not hunt another cat!" The black tuxedo felt his hackles raising at Redice. Oh, he wanted to sink his claws at him so badly, to show him how it felt. However, he realized that this was still Nightstar's den, and that attacking a cat in this cramped space would not be good. Letting out a deep breath, the black tuxedo turned to Nightstar. "Nightstar, my recommendation is execution. It would not be good to let him roam free."

Nightstar's dismissal had the tom's fur standing on end. This wasn't a problem that could be solved with his group of assembled cats, the entire clan needed to be involved in something like this. Sablestrike opened his mouth to argue his point, but a glance at his mother stopped the tom. At once his fervor was gone, his fur laying flat again as the rest of the council members dismissed him too, even Locustcall. If not for that stupid look he'd have something to say to that tom, but now wouldn't be the time for that. That much was clear. Accepting Rookfire's words, Sablestrike backed out of the den. It didn't seem right to back down so easily, but if he had pushed further it would only serve to disappoint his mother as well. The moment he left seemed to be what Redice was waiting for. He could hear... well, a lot coming from the tom, though it was all muffled from his place outside of the den. Still, Sablestrike placed himself close to the den, angling his ears to hear anything he might actually catch.

A problem not easily solved (Open) - Page 2 VVKXCX7

Locustcall

You're the pretender,
what if I say I'll never surrender?

Sablestrike left and Redice began to speak. The story from the first few sentences was already odd. Who would assume the prey pile needed something new? While it was nice, warriors didn't need variety. Anything put in the pile was good enough...

or almost anything.

Previous assumptions quickly melted as the tale continued, spoken as though it was some grand achievement. Locustcall could almost justify the carnage if the Skyclan cat trespassed, even if they had gotten into an argument and fought on the thunderpath. He would call him stupid, but it was almost understandable. But this? Redice left camp with the explicit plan to commit murder and lacked the brains or the fear to even pretend it was anything else. There were no lies to try and cover it up, no attempt to appear remorseful... That somehow made it all worse.

Locustcall did nothing to hide his anger and disgust. His fur prickled and his musculature tensed beneath his hide. Rookfire was the first to suggest a punishment and Locustcall couldn't help but agree. "Seconded. No one would feel safe knowing a cat willing to eat other cats was roaming the forest and there is no way we are keeping it here." It. A cat like that didn't deserve to be referred to as a proper feline. "Either we take care of this now or some other cat dies because we did not act." The tom's eyes glared daggers at the would-be murderer, ready to pounce if they did anything stupid. Redice showed no fear over killing another cat, but they might over their own.

Leopardsun breathed the briefest sigh of relief as Sablestrike exited the den, though she swallowed it back down when Redice began to speak. He had been hunting, then- but not for prey. No, not for anything that any right-minded cat would consider prey.

And he had thought that hunting- catching, killing- a cat from another Clan was not only a good idea, but a way to...

Win?

Her mind raced as she processed the words. He wished only that he could have- used the other warrior as rat bait.

She had just started to open her mouth when Rookfire gave his verdict, and Locustcall didn't waste any time before seconding it. Though she had her misgivings about allowing a cat still so relatively new to ShadowClan (regardless of the fact that he had been a warrior of theirs before; she still hadn't quite come around to trusting him just yet) decide the fate of a ShadowClan cat- Rookfire raised a valid point, and she could only think of more the longer she thought.

"Rookfire makes an important point," Leopardsun began. "Murder, even attempted, isn't something we can take lightly. We could keep him under strict guard, but that would be wasting warriors who could be hunting actual prey to feed the Clan on a liability."

It hurt to say such things about a Clanmate, even one she didn't particularly like. ShadowClan was ShadowClan, community was community, but- actions had consequences, and Redice had certainly taken action. The complete lack of remorse, seeming eager to return to his day as if nothing had happened? That wasn't something she could brush off, justify, or forgive. It was cruelty, plain and simple.

Even his reaction now showed that he didn't understand the severity of it, the oath that every warrior spoke and the code they were meant to follow. There was no honor in what had transpired here.

"We certainly can't exile him- who knows what would happen? Not to mention that whatever he does if we do could easily be blamed on us, for not dealing with him ourselves when we had the chance. No, there's no easy solution... I don't like the idea of execution for a first offense, generally, but I don't see a better answer in this situation."

There was a pause, something she hadn't considered sparked as she thought over Locustcall's words. No cat could feel safe if they let him loose, but- SkyClan, whose warrior lay half-dead in ShadowClan's medicine den, would be more than displeased. Of that, she was sure.

"I'm not sure that we could avoid outright war with SkyClan if we were to keep him here. The weather is still cold and herbs are scarce. We would be at risk if they were to attack- the dogs invaded so recently, there's no way we could prepare for another assault. And even setting that risk aside, if he's shown such disregard for the code and no remorse for it there's no telling that ShadowClan would be safe."

She frowned, looking to her paws before turning to Nightstar.

"I wish it hadn't come to this, but... I third the call for execution. Redice has shown blatant disregard not only for the warrior code, but also for the trust a Clan places in its warriors. We cannot allow this to stand, and we cannot allow him to roam unchecked."

Snowfoot had bristled gradually as Redice told his story. This was no cat! This was a beast of the Dark Forest hidden in their ranks. And if not, then at the very least he had the same morals as the Dark Forest, maybe even poorer. To deliberately hunt down a cat unprovoked, attempt to kill them outright, and furthermore, to do so with the intention of eating them? Snowfoot was relieved when, one by one, her fellow council members called for execution.

“I fourth the motion. As others have said, exiling him would be dangerous for the entire forest and could be a repeat of the Dawnhawk incident. Keeping him here would waste valuable paws and invite the wrath of SkyClan. With WindClan already angry at us, we can’t afford more hostilities. Furthermore, I believe we would be within the Code to kill him, as we would be doing so in self-defense. Just think, who could this creature go after next? Could be your mate, your kits, you even. He shows no remorse, and clearly cares nothing for the Warrior Code.”

The SkyClan cat was stabalized. She had worked on him as if he was their own, as she was expected to. Anger burned under her pelt so with a clenched jaw she prowled to Nightstar's den. It wasn't the order Nightstar gave, it was how he spoke to her like his slave. She deserved more respect. Furthermore, the sight of blood was dripping off Redice and a kit could figure out what was going on. Slipping past Sablestrike - of course the tom was getting his nose into things - Burdockroot slipped into the back of the crowd as Snowfoot spoke. She missed the whole reason why, but she didn't need to know it to figure out that this wasn't a case of Redice attacking an intruder if execution was being called for, especially from Snowfoot.

Clearing her throat she spoke. "I warned you, Nightstar. Moons ago. I told you he needed to be watched carefully. Execution." She didn't bother glancing at Redice. He was nothing. She knew he was a monster since the day she laid eyes on him as a kit. If only Nightstar would have listened.

Nightstar considered each and every cat as they explained what they thought, and he listened intently. He wanted to use Redice as there was much potential in a cat that didn't care for any cat they could kill, that would do it without question... Nightstar could've used him but this was a mistake much too grave for him to try to explain away, besides, the memory of his mentor and his second mother was used as pelts for Dawnhawk's rogues backs, and the striking similarity had shivers running down his pelt. Leopardsun was right, Rookfire was right - much to his surprise - Redice couldn't be allowed to live. Perhaps this was the first time with a sort of resoluteness that Nightstar realized that he very well had cats rights to live within his grasp, that he had the power to fully decide if this tom walked free.

The amount of power that he himself had sent a shiver of something down his back, an emotion or a mix of emotions too complicated to dissect. His gaze hardened, there was something that he wasn't sure any cat had considered, and that was how he would die. Deathberries were quick and almost painless, he thought, but was he deserving of it? Not that any cat should suffer if they were to be put to death but... if Nightstar was responsible for his life, should he not be the one to end it? It only made sense, that if he could take his life after he ordered him dead, that would show him committed to the decision. Meanwhile, should he order it but not be the one to do it that would only be cowardice.

Amber eyes steeled themselves as he got to his paws. "Block him in. Pin him down if you have to. Shadowclan deserves to know what is happening. I won't be long." Nightstar meowed, passing by Burdockroot, resolutely not looking into his eyes as he felt a sort of nausea roll over him. He had no problem killing rogues, and he had attempted to do it without another thought, but a clanmate?

Steeling himself and settling his subtle quivers Nightstar leapt onto the Jaggedrock and gave a loud yowl, though most of the clan was already gathered, listening intently and curiously meandering. "Shadowclan! As some of you may have heard we have a Skyclan warrior within our midst. I will explain to you all what has transpired from the attack of the Skyclan warrior, to the decision the council and I have just reached. " He took a breath, and waited for the murmurs to settle before he continued. "Redice found this Skyclan warrior on the neutral territory by the thunderpath, there, Redice proceeded to hunt and attempt to gut this warrior and then would use the cat for rat bait. Redice has not expressed any remorse, empathy, or any regret for his action. So it is with the consult of the council, and our medicine cat, Burdockroot, and the memories of Dawnhawk and his kin, that I sentence Redice to death by my teeth." He was doing everything he could to school his expression, to not let the fear show in his eyes or let the scent drift.

"If there are any objections, say them now or forever hold your peace. Any cat that wishes to spectate the execution may follow us out after I hear what my clan has to say." Nightstar finished, waiting silently and apprehensively for what they had to say.

Badgermask had been quietly watching the entire thing - taking a post not far from the medicine cat's den once the injured cat - a SkyClan cat of all people, was brought in by Nightstar personally - thought Redice was also there and was the one with blood on his paws. She had said nothing, simply watching with curiosity as Nightstar went to his den with no word, followed by the cats that made up his personal council - and Sablestrike, for some reason.

And so she sat, gaze shifting between the Burdockroot's den and Nightstar's den - until finally Nightstar had slipped out and was now yowling for their attention. Her gaze snapped to the leader, her eyes flickering as he started to explain the details - of what Redice had done and his punishment - death. ...Huh. Her gaze fell towards the leader's den, tail thumping. The council had decided upon it...Her mother had. Redice was to die...So be it.

She had never been sure of what to think of the tom, but if her mother had voted for this action then it would be one that she stood by for that alone. It was simply a bitter reminder that she could not fully trust her Clanmates - everybody deserved to be held at tail's length until she could decide upon how she personally felt. If she truly found them trustworthy. Her ear however twitched at the offer to follow and witness it. Morbid curiosity clawed at her, and she knew at once that she would be part of the crowd when the deed was to be done.

Redice listened to each cat in turn, and unblinking... smiled. He sat calmly and began to groom. Nightstar had lost his game so badly that he needed to kill his adversary? Redice chuckled, making no attempt to escape whatsoever.

"Pin me down if it makes you feel better. I'm not afraid. I will not run." His eyes then went to everyone in the room again, unblinking, and he was no longer grooming.

"Put your paws on me. Bury your teeth beneath my skin. Peel back my fur from my body and gaze upon my bare bones." Redice said it so calmly it was like he was trying to soothe frightened kits in a thunder storm. "Show everyone that you are no different. Show everyone that you play this game too."

Redice finally gave a grin that split across his face and his eyes hardened into sulfuric yellow diamonds. They settled their gaze on Rookfire specifically and never moved.

"Force me to the ground,
O righteous one,
Bury your secrets in my skin,
Carve your justice into my bones,
You, Pure One,
Enrich the soil with my life's blood,
Make sure there is no drop left for me."

Redice sang in his high-pitched scratchy voice, a song that replaced the hole where fear should have been. His tongue slid slowly across his bared teeth and his tail tip twitched with excitement.

"Come, experience what it is like to take a life." And with that, Redice waited for Nightstar to return. If they were going to kill him, he didn't want them to forget it. He wanted his death to be burned into the memories of every cat here. He wanted them to see his body when they closed their eyes. He wanted them to hear his song as they dreamed and remember it as they died.

Nightstar finally emerged, and Tigershriek was digging his claws in and out of the ground in anticipation. What could he possibly say? Had Redice simply gone too far? Why was there only one Skyclan warrior in camp, had the warrior been patrolling alone? Questions swirled in his mind, and the tom swiftly gathered beneath the Jaggedrock, looking up at his leader. Nightstar's first sentence was mostly normal. The warrior supposed a lone warrior on neutral territory was stupid, and could certainly invite attack, but a smart cat wouldn't attack for no reason.

Then Nightstar continued, and Tigershriek couldn't help but feel rage build in his body at every word.

Every part of the tom wanted to go into that den and drag Redice out himself. What he did wasn't just wrong, it was downright monstrous. He had even gone so far as to suddenly get to his paws, before forcibly dragging his body back down to the ground, sitting with a lashing tail and burning eyes. He wouldn't do anything though. Despite his building emotion, he kept himself in check, because he would not disappoint Nightstar or Locustcall. He refused.

He also refused to let Nightstar bear the thought of this death alone. If he didn't see, didn't know, how could he truly say he loved his adopted father? How could he say that he understood without being there? Tigershriek had never seen a cat die, he had barely seen cats wounded, but he knew that it was supposedly a harrowing sight. Perhaps better to witness it within his clan, rather than on a bloody battlefield. He would follow Nightstar anywhere, and if it was to be just outside the camp, witnessing the execution of an attempted murderer, then so be it.

PostSubject: Re: A problem not easily solved (Open)   A problem not easily solved (Open) - Page 2 EmptyWed 8 Mar 2023 - 22:50

The commotion did not escape Harriertalon, who sat beside Badgermask. Her usually bright face held no smile. What Redice did to that SkyClan warrior... His punishment would not be light. Not with the council. Not with Nightstar.

Not long after the council had gathered, Nightstar left his den beneath Jaggedrock and stood atop it, yoweling for his clan to gather. The leader disclosed what everyone already knew: Redice had mercilessly attacked a SkyClan cat who was currently fighting for his life in Burdockroot's den. But what was new to her, was that he had done this for... Fun?

Her black fur bristled, thinking back on her interaction with him during her apprenticeship: he been picking apart his food, meticulously sorting its insides, blood dripping from his face. She had trusted him to rip the twoleg device off her neck, even after being witness to this strange behaviour.  She allowed him to bare fangs that scraped across her neck to do so. She had put trust in him. How foolish of her to be so naive just because this cat was a part of her clan. What in StarClan had been wtong with her that day? Especially when the warning signs that something was wrong with him were so glaringly bright. If he had truly done this for fun, the next cat could have been one of their own.

Muffled singing could be heard from within Jaggedrock, a haunting verse she had never heard before. No begging for mercy. No begging for a second chance. Redice truly held no remorse for his actions.

Her decision was solidified now, and she had no objections. Let the Dark Forest take him with them. Harriertalon would be there for the execution.

Batswarm did not know this tom, nor care to have ever known him. He was right to not interact with anyone outside his family: any one of these cats could be just like the red warrior.

He would not be there for the execution, but he had no objections.

Sablestrike listened silently as Nightstar spoke. He could feel the fur rising along his back, a mixture of loathing and anger bubbling to the surface. Ever since he had observed the tom laughing at his own clanmates in the midst of the flood Sablestrike had known something was wrong with him. Stars, he should have been able to prevent this. He had known that tom couldn't be trusted, but he hadn't done a thing to keep the warrior in check. No remorse, no empathy, no regret. The death sentence was earned, if not for those reasons then for putting Shadowclan in danger... Still, Redice was a member of Shadowclan, a clanmate, was there no other alternative?

Singing. He wasn't hearing things, Redice was singing. Even faced with death for his heinous actions, the tom was singing. It was as if he had no regard for his own life, just as he had none for others. Sablestrike's reservations about death of a clanmate quickly fell through, and he found himself wanting to be a part of the execution. There was no saving a cat like that. Sablestrike would join in watching his clanmate's execution. He needed to be there when it happened, it would be a solemn reminder of how his inaction had all but been the catalyst that lead a cat to his death.

Moondancer's nose had wrinkled in shock and disgust as the bloodied Skyclan warrior had been brought into camp, quickly taken to Burdockroot's den. She didn't know the Skyclanner and didn't really care beyond what their own clanmates must be thinking, knowing they would likely be looking for their missing warrior before long and this... This would not paint Shadowclan in a good light. Redice had blood on his paws and her mother had holed up in the leaders den with the others, and Moondancer had turned her attention away, sitting by her sister Badgermask. It wasn't her business really, not unless whatever happened affected Shadowclan.

After a time Nightstar emerged from the den, calling to the clan. Moondancer's eyes widened slightly as the tom told of how Redice had no remorse or empathy, had treated lives like a game. And the council had decided on execution. Her mother had decided on execution. Iceheart, two cats she respected. If they had decided such, that the strange, unknowable Redice was to be executed...

Then it was necessary. Moondancer did not object, understanding just how this news might upset the other clan. Better to deal with the problem cat now and get the Skyclan warrior back where he belonged, rather than risk war over a cat who didn't seem to care for anyone's life... Not even his own, it would seem. She had no need to watch the execution, and trusted that her clanmates would get the job done properly.

Snowfoot stepped out of the leader’s den, flanking Redice. She made sure to walk on his right so her weak leg wasn’t facing him. The black-and-white warrior remained stonefaced as the execution was announced, keeping a stoic and formal demeanor. But then her façade threatened to shatter as the creature began to sing. In a move that surprised even herself, Snowfoot spoke up. “If you need assistance, Nightstar, I would be willing to help you dispose of this filth.”

CICADAPAW and MARSHMALLOW
-

Cicadapaw had watched the cats flood the leader's den, Marshmallow had been beside her, they watched, and waited. The cats that were entering the den were the council, and not-so-strangely, Redice seemed to be in there as well. Now, obviously, Cicadapaw appeared anxious as she stared into the den. Her mentor had tried to kill a cat- or so she heard, and his punishment was surely being planned. The tortoiseshell's tail tip twitched, and her heart thumped in her chest uncertainly.

Nightstar left the den, and Marshmallow walked towards the rock, her gaze fixated on the leader's den. Cicadapaw only felt as if she was supposed to follow suit, but unlike the almost emotionless appearance of her mother, Cicadapaw was half crouched down, and her ears were flicked backwards. The pair took a position in the clearing, both gazing up to Nightstar, but with very different expressions. As Nighstar explained the situation, Cicadapaw only seemed to panic more, and as soon as Nightstar asked for objections, Cicadapaw ran out from her mother's side.

"No! Redice is my mentor!" Cicadapaw's thoughts raced, though she paused once she heard... something. Raspy singing. Redice was singing? To calm the nerves? To accept fate? She stared into the den, but she couldn't see much. Well, that looked bad, especially for herself. Mama told her to hold her ground, though, because that would surely convince at least a couple of cats. She stared at Mama... Why wasn't she supporting her? Why was
she just standing there?

Marshmallow felt her tail twitch as Cicadapaw left her side, and now she was yelling at Nightstar. I did not teach my own daughter to do such a mousebrained thing... She thought grumpily, and chose to ignore the singing coming from within the leader's den. She met her daughters gaze with a fierce look, almost disappointment. A part of her understood Cicadapaw's outrageous reaction, but she wasn't about to admit it.

She huffed, and padded over towards her daughter, grabbing and dragging her back to where they were sitting before. She turned to Cicadapaw, and whispered into her ear. "Don't draw such needless attention to yourself, that was a very mousebrained thing for you to do." Cicadapaw glanced away, almost shamefully. "I'm sorry..." The poor thing looked scared, like she was about to cry. Marshmallow only continued to whisper, quieter than before, and using her real voice. "Redice is mousebrained too, more mousebrained than anyone in this clan, or any other clan. You understand?"

Cicadapaw stared up, confused at her mother. "He should've killed it- the Skyclan cat- properly, and then buried it somewhere. Not flaunt it around in an area that he would very much be shamed for his actions." Marshmallow continued, and then lifted her head up away from her daughter's ear.

There it was. Cicadapaw had almost thought her mother became an entirely different cat for a second, but this wasn't at all comforting. It didn't seem like Mama knew how to comfort someone. Her tail tip and her whiskers still twitched as she watched Nightstar on the rock, and she couldn't help but glance at the leader's den every few moments.
