With the warming weather, the territory seemed to return to life... Even if the undead wandering the land made it smell as if it wasn't. With that new life came new challenges, for no season was simply easy, each had it's own difficulties to overcome, and Murkystar would happily take monitoring predators and chasing them away over watching her clanmates starve. This time she and an older apprentice, Icepaw, was making their way towards the hidden outcropping. There had been reports of a raccoon taking up residence, and while it wasn't an immediate threat... It would likely have young soon, and she would prefer to not have to deal with both an angry raccoon defending their offspring as well as any potentially hostile WindClan patrols. It had been peaceful for a while, but in her heart she knew it was only a matter of time before they tried to stake a claim again. As the two grew closer to the edge of the territory, Murkystar glanced at the apprentice. She had grown quieter after Ratrunner's death, and she didn't blame her. It was hard to lose a mentor, and a role model. This whole situation was hard, and she didn't know what to do with it. She had been so hurt and dismayed when Flintstar hadn't stood up for her against Asylum, but now... Well, she understood why he did what he had at least. And here she was doing the exact same. She bit her tongue lightly, trying to find the words to say, but everything just felt.. Hollow. Shifting to the task at hand as a source instead, she mewed softly. "Patrols haven't been able to fully determine where exactly the raccoon has made it's nest, so it will be up to us to find it and chase it off. Be careful, Icepaw. If you run into it, call for me - I'll be close by."
Icepaw grew lost in her own thoughts on the silent walk to the border. She hadn’t spent much time with any cats outside of her mentor Thalia and…the Dark Forest cats. Logically, she knew that she didn’t spend every moment with them, and in fact, spent a lot of time alone; but her mind often got away from her and it made time feel like it didn’t even pass. One moment she was leaving her training with Thalia and then the next moment, she was with a Dark Forest cat and while days had passed, it felt like no time had passed at all. She used to be present in every moment, studying everything around her, and now it was hard to simply listen to a conversation. Harder still to speak to any cats meaningfully. She wished Ratrunner were still here; he would know what to say to her to help her feel better.
When they arrived, Icepaw blinked out of her thoughts and looked to Murkystar. She nodded. “I’ll stay close,” she promised quietly. With the new task, she put focus to it to keep her thoughts away. She moved quietly, letting her paws press into the cool wet grass underfoot. The forest was quiet and she kept her ears perked for any suspicious sounds. However, with everything being quiet, and there not being something urgent to immediately focus on, Icepaw’s thoughts once again began to creep in and overtake her. She thought of Forestpaw, who she hadn’t spoken to since Ratrunner’s death; she thought of Ratrunner himself and the last image of his bleeding body before she’d fled; she thought of Duskflight and Swiftheart who had sobbed and mourned over Ratrunner’s dying body; she thought of her cowardice and how she fled, and how she couldn’t seem to stop thinking about that one stupid moment-
She stopped and shut her eyes tightly. This isn’t the time. When Icepaw opened her eyes again, she hears small shuffling. She followed the sound and peered under some brush to spot the raccoon in question that they had gone searching for. Icepaw looked back and when she caught Murkystar’s gaze, she flicked her tail to indicate that the leader should come closer.
