Emergency Herbs [Open Herb Hunt / Learning]

Dovefrost sat a little ways away from Windclan camp, the wind sweeping through his fur sending a chill down his spine. He still wasn't used to all of this. He was slowly adjusting to the open air, not really finding it as discomforting as he once thought when he first arrived in Windclan to help out. He still couldn't imagine living here on a permanent basis. He found the trees way more comforting than the open sky. At least he was closer to the Moonstone here.

"Alright! Spread out, find something you think might be a herb and if you do show it to me and if it's a herb, I will explain it's use and how to use it. This way, if I'm not here, you will be able to do some minor healing yourself." Taking care of two clans was difficult. He couldn't be in both places at once so this was to ensure that Windclan would be okay while he was checking up on Thunderclan.

"Dovefrost, right?" Swiftspirit inclined her head to the medicine cat that had been helping Windclan out while Berrypaw was ill. He'd invited some of her clanmates to come looking for herbs, and figuring that their herb stores must be low given the current circumstances, Swiftspirit was happy enough to tag along and try to help. She had little idea of what she was really looking for beyond the basic cobwebs, but she'd spend enough time with Softbreeze, Smallbean and Hentooth to know that without herbs, things wouldn't improve. And it was a chance to learn something new, as well. Her mother would have disapproved if she didn't take the opportunity to learn something when it was presented to her, and while Swiftspirit now considered herself a clan cat, there was wisdom in that.

At the Thunderclanner's instruction, she inhaled, then slowly picked her way across the open fields. Greenery was scarce in fields of white, but what little there was stuck out in the bleak landscape and Swiftspirit padded towards it and sat. "Would this be of any use?" She asked, eyes finding the white tom's as she eyed the herb dubiously. Tall-stemmed with almond-shaped leaves, something she wasn't familiar enough with to place a name to. She wouldn't try and harvest it herself, she'd leave that to the one who knew what he was doing.

Batkit was eager to stretch her legs and so the call for an herb hunt was very welcome.  She was told she was allowed to join as long as she did exactly what Dovefrost told her.  She nodded agreeing and followed the party out.

She listened to his orders and excitedly smelled around for interesting smelling plants that might be herbs.

She saw a dried up flower poking out of the snow it had lots of small dark seeds in it (poppy seeds) Would these help you at all Dove?
I remember that mommy was not supposed to eat these she asks waiting for his approval/disaprval of her find.

At the sound of Swiftpelt's voice, Dovefrost had looked up, green eyes catching on the herb that was in front of the she-cat. "That is Chickweed, a very useful herb especially in this weather. It's used to treat Greencough, the leaves are chewed and eaten. A good find Swiftspirit. You can use your claws to carefully cut off a few good leaves, and make sure to leave some of the plant so it can regrow." He said with a nod before looking over to Batkit.

"Those are poppy seeds my dear." He said with a slight purr rumbling in his throat. "They are rather useful, they help with a few things. We mostly use them for pain, so if you hurt your paw, or you hit your head, that is what you would eat to feel better. You can grab a few if you wish."

Swiftspirit nodded at Dovefrost's answer, glad she'd found something that was useful out in this weather. Carefully she did as instructed, stripping a few leaves from the plant cautiously and setting them to the side. She then turned in search of something else. With so many sick and leafbare being as harsh as it was, Windclan needed what they could find.

Swiftspirit was sure to keep an eye on little Batkit who had joined them. She didn't believe the Thunderclanner had ill intentions, but the same could not be said of anything else in this harsh territory. Were the kit to be hurt at all out here, she didn't know if she could forgive herself. The idea of the kit being outside of camp made her uneasy, but it had been agreed upon, so she didn't have the heart to shoo Batkit back into camp like she wanted to.

After some searchign, another plant caught her attention. "I think I found something else, Dovefrost." She called. The bush she stood in front of had purple-ish berries... Swiftspirit thought she'd seen them before in the medicine den, but wasn't quite sure.

She nodded listening to his answer about the Poppy seeds.  she picks some carefully they stood out clearly from the snow and were easy to grab.

Batkit kept close to the group, she knew that she was already granted quite a bit of freedom by just getting to join this.  She did not want to test the limit and risk getting sent back to camp.  Umm Dovefossstt? she stumbled over his name... R's were hard to pronounce for kits and being a shy kit who did not usually speak up her speaking skills were behind that of average kits.

What's Thundeclan like (again missing the r) she asked him looking up at him

Do chu guys have lots of kittens too? she asked

W-what's being a medicine cat like? Are you gonna move hee (here) with us foeve? she stuttered heavily while saying this and missing every single r.

She was usually very shy but having a foreign cat in their camp was an exciting thing for a kitten that even she was willing to talk to find out more about other places far far away... (well far for a kitten that is).

Her ears twitched as Swiftspirit found something.  Walking over she saw the berries. Ohhh they are sooo petty! she said in a whisper looking at the berries.

She looked up at her clanmate ... who also had a hard name to say

G-g-good find Swiftspiit she stumbled over the name even worse this time.  

(the lack of r with this name is gonna be fun XD)

she covered her mouth with her tail embarrassed... EEEkkk i'm so sowwy I just called you spit ... I didn't mean to she looked at her paws blushing.

she stumbled over this as well being flustered did not help her already poor pronunciation.

She saw something else under the berries and pointed at it with her tail

Dovefrost turned his attention to Swiftspirit at the sound of her voice. "Ah, Juniper Berries. Used for giving strength, or helping with belly aches. They also help with breathing, and calming the mind." He said, recalling their uses. He liked teaching them, it helped him recall all the uses and herbs he was taught as an apprentice.  It was good for his memory. "You can pick as many as you want." They would need to find a leaf or something to help carry them back, of course.

The white tom turned back to Batkit. "Thunderclan is different. We have a lot of trees, and cover from the open sky. As for being a medicine cat.. Well it's not like being a warrior. We follow a different code than warriors, borders aren't meant for us. We help whoever needs it regardless of clan. As far as moving here.. No I won't be doing that. Once Berrypaw recovers, he will be taking back over fully." He explained to the kit, before getting a closer look at the plant she had pointed out.

"That would be Chicory (I'm assuming). The roots is actually what we want from that. They help with hunger pangs, which is good during leaf-bare. We would have to dig them up. After we gather these, we can head back to camp, it's getting a little to cold for my comfort."

Her whiskers twitched in amusement as Batkit stumbled over her name. "It's alright, Batkit." She chuckled softly.

Swiftspirit was happy to do as instructed, being careful to not damage the berries as she picked them. She was glad that they managed to find useful herbs despite the miserable weather, though she couldn't help but be grateful when Dovefrost announced he was ready to get going.

"The wind makes the cold worse." She agreed, Dovefrost had a bit more fur than she did, and she'd rather get Batkit out of the cold, too. She padded over to the chicory that had been found, helping to dig up the roots. Today had been successful, as far as herbs went. Hopefully the hunting patrols would have similar luck.

"Alright, let's start heading back."

The little furball kitten relaxed seeing that Swiftspirt was not angry over the innocent mistake.

t-t--- th-- thanks she stuttered out.

she nodded at dovefrost's instructuions. She pawed at the hard ground trying to get at the root of the plant.... but the ground was frozen solid due to the extreme cold...

she clawed at it but made little to no progress her tiny fore-arms not really able to do much...

She blushed looking up at her two escorts ... umm--- c-could you pwease help me? ....Swiftspirit she meowed shyly. She slowed down as she said her clanmates name and made sure to get the hard to pronounce r in.

After she got help with it the trio returned towards camp... she walked very closely behind Swiftspirit making sure to keep close to the warrior

umm swiftspirit? can you be my second mommy? she asked shyly to the warrior.


OOC: I was pretty sure we were trying to wrap it up with my post? If not ignore the part about them going back to wc camp and continue on with the hunt.
