Neglected Space [C]

A tight-lipped grimace drew across Webshadow's features as he ducked through silvery vines, expression darkening when they snagged and pulled at his pelt. The smells of cool air and fallen snow were almost fresh enough, almost strong enough to mask the stench of rot, but nothing could truly bury the way Carrionplace reeked. Webshadow turned to his patrolmates, blinking apologetically as he surveyed them. "Sorry for bringing you all out so far. I figured maybe we could find... something out here." Feathery tail whisked this way and that, and with little more than a nod, he slipped off in search of prey.

It wasn't long before a scrawny rat crossed his line of sight, and Webshadow pounced towards it with claws outstretched– but he hadn't been the only one eyeing that rat tonight. Heartbeats before he would've closed his paws around it, talons pierced through his shoulder, bowling him over as wings beat against his ears.

Webshadow attempted to catch a rat... catch unsuccessful. -7SP.

"It's fine, Webshadow. Times are tough." Nightstalker responded simply, sniffing as they went along, hoping for any sign of life within the frozen marsh. The young warrior's ears twitched as he heard a faint flap of wings. He didn't take notice until Webshadow had gotten tossed into the dirt. Without much thought, Nightstalker turned on his heel and launched towards the older warriors aide, claws unsheathing as he launched himself at the owl, deadly silent.

Carrionplace truly wasn't the ideal place to hunt in. However, he wasn't the one to complain. Leaf-bare had its effects on everyone, and Duskflight nodded alongside Nightstalker as he made his way in. Suddenly, the familiar flap of wings and sharp talons caught the dark-furred tom aware, and he tensed, claws unsheathed as he looked at the predator. As Nightstalker took his turn first to attack, the warrior knew he too was to do the same. Bracing himself for any other attack of the talons, he dove in, helping to pin the owl down while the rest attacked. His claws dug tight in the owl, determined to keep it still until it was too risky to do so anymore.

Duskflight used Leap and Hold, using 15 SP and dealing 8 (+1 from Night Finesse) damage. Owl is pinned for 1 turn!

Ospreypaw wasn't sure why she was here. Out of all of the apprentices Webshadow could've picked, she was the lucky mope that got dragged along. Don't get her wrong, she was fine with actually being an apprentice and performing the duties that came with her rank. It was just that she barely knew anyone in the squad and she doubted anyone really knew her. She supposed that she knew their names...for now. She'll probably forget once this was over. She also kinda knew Duskflight and Nightp-stalker from a brief interaction during her kithood but that was besides the point. Ah well. She'll have to just suck it up like everyone else.

It took a while for the group to arrive at the infamous Carrionplace. She'd actually never been there and had only heard about it through listening in on conversations. Nobody really like to hunt there since the prey that scrambled around were usually disease-ridden and will probably kill someone at some point. Plus they were kinda gross too. Sadly, a harsh leaf-bare brought in the need to stoop to these level in order to acquire sustenance to keep on living. Anyway, she supposed obtaining this type of knowledge was a good incentive to allow herself to be rented out on these patrols. The more she learned, the better chance she had at not being dragged to the afterlife prematurely.

The apprentice was snapped out of her head at Webshadow's unnecessary apology. She kept her face carefully blank but only lifted a brow in his direction. "We need prey so we don't starve to death. Walking farther than usual should be the least of our concerns." she meowed with a shrug. It was cold for sure but they could tough it out to keep themselves fed. Gotta make sacrifices once in a while.

The dark-furred she-cat began to scent the air when through her peripheral vision she noticed the patrol leader go down and a mass of feathers following suit. What the-?

Osprey whipped her head around and for a brief fraction of time widened her eyes before her face took on her signature poker face. Oh. That was an owl. Nightstalker had been the first to react as he launched himself at the owl. Duskflight was next. He pinned down the bird effectively giving the rest an opportunity to sharpen their claws on the feathery beast. Osprey...should probably do something shouldn't she? Problem was, she'd never been in a battle before. Calm eyes scanned the scene before making up her mind. She'll do fine. She already had what she needed -which were her claws, teeth, and wits. Besides, she just saw the others go for it and had a few examples before her turn. No biggie.

With that, the apprentice rushed on over with a surprising amount of speed and snapped her jaws mercilessly closed on whatever she could reach of the pinned predator. She then leaped away and shrugged to herself. She did what she could. It was already dead anyway. Mission...accomplished?

This season required desperate actions, and one of them was taking prey where they normally wouldn't. The snow didn't care if it was too cold for your paws and stomachs didn't care if what you found was appetizing. Cicadashriek had already recognized this, so walking down to the carrion place didn't earn any remarks from him. Others had already spoken his thoughts on the matter as well, so he remained silent in his search for prey. Hopefully, they would be able to find something edible here.

The sound of a confrontation interrupted his hunt and Cicadashriek was quick to shift his attention. An owl, and one dumb enough to try and attack a patrol of clan cats. The rest had wasted no time in piling onto the bird, and he was the last to get a bite in. He took Ospreypaw's place as he lept back, thankful for Duskflight holding the predator down as he went for a bite to the throat. He had a clan to feed, he wanted this to be done quickly.

He'd hit the snow-covered rot hard, and the air had rushed out of him quickly. Warm blood pooled where the owl had struck him, and Webshadow writhed, wanting to strike back at it; but before he could, Nightstalker descended on the bird, then Duskflight– even little Ospreypaw jumped in, and Cicadashriek wasted no time in going for the bird's throat. Pale eyes flickered between the mottled warrior and the owl as it convulsed with the last of its life. You certainly were Burningwing's apprentice, Webshadow thought with a slight grimace as he gathered his paws back under him. "Thank you for the help. I'm sure we can drag that back to camp." He hummed, lapping away the blood still collecting. It was sore, and as he lifted his leg to take a step, he winced. Nothing he couldn't manage, though; they were going to catch something here, he was determined. "Now, let's try that again." And he limped off, nose to the ground in hopes something would turn up. As he drifted away from the group, another rat hauled its body out of a pile of filth. The jump was a little off-time, just a bit lame, and Webshadow was certain the rodent would bolt. Or, worse, another owl would swoop down and try to carry him off. But his claws closed around the rat, piercing through thin fur until it went still.

The owl was done and dead in an instant, and for that, Nightstalker was grateful. He did not wish to fight anything at the moment, after his stint with the foxes. Putting his nose to the air, he caught the scent of another rat, amongst all the rubbish and rank stench. He did not particularly enjoy Carrionplace but he knew the benefits to it, as because of all the foreign material seemed to attract them in droves. When he spotted what he was tracking, he moved into a crouch position, stalking ever closer. Once he was close enough, he leaped for it, but the odd terrain, mixed with Nightstalkers leg twinging on him, scurried away. Nightstalker held back a sigh as he stood back up roughly, his ears pressing against his head with irritation. He best just continue looking.

As quickly as the fight started, it was just as quick to end. The owl had picked the wrong prey; a patrol of warriors was certainly not easy to defeat. He sniffed the air, and though it was nothing close to pleasant— a few faint scents of rodents hung around. Webshadow made his first catch, then Nightstalker— just barely missing the target. With a small frown, he too decided to give it a go. His eyes scanned the place, two-leg stuff lying around at every corner. Some were dangerously sharp, while most of the others were oddly-looking. A rustle, slight clanging came from one of the silver boulders, and that alone has caught his attention. With paws kept light, the tom crouched, stalking it until it was close enough to give it a go— and leaped. Unfortunately, he rose with no catch in his jaws. Has the unfamiliar terrain tricked him?

As she'd expected, it was all over as quickly as it had begun. The perks of being in a patrol full of warriors she supposed. She watched as one by one her groupmates began their search for food once again. She had to give them props. They didn't seem like the type to give up very easily. Luckily for them, she didn't either. Once everyone was heading off on their own, the black and white molly began to walk away as well, senses alert to begin her own search for prey.

It didn't take her long to spot an average sized rat sniffing about in the rubbish. She sighed at the prospect of eating a filthy rat before slowly stalking it, paws always mindful of where they stepped so that she wouldn't scare any potential meals away. After only a few moments of sneaking up to the little creature, the young molly bunched up her haunches then pounced. A part of her was skeptical of her catching the darn thing but she was going for it anyway.

In a surprising twist, the apprentice actually managed to catch the rat. It struggled under her paws so she quickly dealt it a killing bite before her shoulders relaxed. Wow. Alright then. She apparently had luck on her side today -which was rather rare. She snatched up her prey and began to walk over to where they had all separated from.
