Bird Watching and Other Activities (closed solo)

Juniperlight’s single yellow eye glinted from the shadow of the Halfstone, trained on a bird just a few rabbit hops away. This bird was no ordinary bird; it was a great owl with tawny spotted feathers, and it was greedily guzzling down a mole it had just landed on. It would be gone in a flash - Juniperlight knew owls didn’t stay on the forest floor for long. His chance was disappearing along with the mole. He lunged as silent as a shadow but much more deadly. The warrior aimed for the halfstone instead of the owl, using it as a springboard to launch himself high in the air and right on top of the owl. It was definitely startled and he sunk his teeth deep into its neck, meeting mounds of feathers and flesh rather than finding a spine. He stifled a growl of frustration as blood filled his mouth.

Though the large bird struggled and screeched, his grip was sure. He clung on with his forelegs and ripped away at it with his hind claws, ripping clumps of blood-coated feathers out effortlessly. His mind was not so focused on the attack. Instead, Juniperlight was thinking about how he’d like to take this plump, bountiful catch back to the elders. They would be grateful and it would be an amusing story for his friends.

His absent mind allowed the bird to scramble free, hooting and screaming loud enough to scare away any nearby prey that hadn’t scattered at the start. It didn’t matter. The predator was his prey on this fine morning. Juniperlight was not terribly concerned when a talon struck him on the face: his blind side, not likely to cause much more damage than had already been done.

He twisted nimbly, only vaguely aware of the stinging cut along his cheek. His teeth sunk into the owl’s shoulder. It could snap and peck at him rather harmlessly, but with his solid grip, it was unable to reach him with its wickedly curved talons. Juniperlight’s weight also prevented the great bird from lifting off the ground despite its many attempts. It would weaken soon, he just knew it. For now, he stayed focused so that it wouldn’t slip away so easily as it did the time before.

The owl’s panicked flapping was beginning to weaken and Juniperlight could feel its muscles straining in vain. The wing that was attached to the shoulder his teeth dug into was moving significantly less than the other, and although Juniperlight’s heart was beating rapidly, he could tell he would easily outlast the owl in this fight. He drew his claws along its back to quiet it faster as well as strengthen his hold on it.

Another several heartbeats passed. He could feel his toes growing sore from being clenched and his claws extending farther than they were meant to. With one last surge of force through his jaws, Juniperlight kicked himself away from the owl to ensure it couldn’t nick him with a talon before he regained solid footing. It appeared startled to suddenly be free, but is was unable to lift off from the ground. The end was fast approaching.

The owl is no longer stunned.

The creature’s writhing was pathetic. The black tom felt a pang of sympathy; he hadn’t meant to drag this out. He regretted not cleanly killing it in the first bite. Though he competed with owls for prey and had his own nasty scrapes with them in the past, he didn’t believe this animal deserved to suffer. Now he would finally end its pain. Juniperlight lunged, this time connecting his longest teeth with the front of the neck and clamping down hard enough to cause the owl’s final gasp to fade out. It went limp in his mouth. He sent a silent prayer to StarClan in thanks, grateful to have stumbled upon the perfect opportunity to bring home prey and prove his value as a warrior in one clean swoop. Now all that was left was the short journey back to camp.
