Simple Times:

"Wolfblaze? Are you up for that hunting patrol I mentioned at your ceremony? If not, we can certainly do this some other time."

The day had gone normally for Kestrelswoop, rather quick if he thought about it. The sun was now beginning to slowly go down, however, there was still a decent amount of time before night approached. He'd already managed to complete all his necessary duties at a reasonable pace. He'd been feeling more energized than normal due to the cooler breeze that's been present since dawn. Cooler temperatures meant that he was focusing less on the irritating heat and more on his tasks, which in turn had him finishing them earlier than he normally would. Thankfully, he was now free to do as he pleased and what better way to spend the time than to go on a little outing with a good friend of his.

He was now standing in front of said dark-furred she-cat awaiting her response with a friendly, lopsided smile. He didn't know if she was even free to do hunt with him but it never hurts to ask. Secretly, however, he was hoping for a solid yes. It's been a good day so far and hanging out with Wolfblaze would make it even better. Spending time with those closest to him often had him feeling rather chipper. The refreshing breeze was certainly amplifying those feelings.

The day had been filled with tasks for the newly named warrior, all sorts of new tasks that warriors did and apprentices didn't and it was just crazy. Yet she had figured it out eventually, and Wolfblaze was ready to do something familiar. So when she saw Kestrelswoop approach, her face broke out into a smile. "Hey! I am very up for that hunting patrol!" Her words were joyful as she began to stand, giving him a playful shove with her shoulder. "No time to waste!" With her exclamation, she began quickly making her way to the entrance to camp, looking back over her shoulder to make sure he was actually following before leaving.

As usual, the she-cat's energy was infectious and he couldn't help but grin at her playful demeanor. He returned the little shove with one as jubilant before shaking his head with an amused snort as he watched her speedily make her way over to the entrance. "Alright, alright! I'm coming! Don't leave me behind in the dust!" Kestrelswoop rushed over to her and once he caught up, they both began their little outing.

Kerath felt... free. It had been quite a long time since he'd been on a fun trip to the territory with little to no worries. It's been even longer since he'd been on one with other clanmates that wasn't a serious patrol. This was just a carefree hang out and nothing more. It's times like these that had him sorely missing his younger days. When days were simpler and with less... worries. At least he could try to recreate those memories and feelings in different ways.

They've been walking in a relatively comfortable silence and even though this was what Kestrel preferred, it was probably best to offer the she-cat a bit more excitement. It didn't take long for a devilishly playful smile to make it's way onto his face. He tried his best to hide it as he slowly picked up his pace and once he was at the right distance, he lifted his tail and playfully swatted her head with it. He sped up before she could piece together what had happened. He kept her in his peripheral vision, watching and waiting to see what she'd try to do. He also kept his senses open to finding prey for them to catch.

Wolfblaze enjoyed the territory, she had since she first went out, and she hoped she would forever. She also enjoyed Kestrelswoop's company, he had always been someone she enjoyed hanging out with since she first met him. So being out and hunting together, was certainly one of the nicer things she could be doing. In the silence, though, she had begun thinking of ways to goof off. Hunting contest? Nah, that's too serious. Sparring instead? Nah, still too serious. Maybe- Her thoughts were then interrupted by the thwack of a tail on her head. Her eyes were wide for a moment as she looked to Kestrelswoop, who had sped up to a few tail lengths away. "Wow!" she said in disbelief, suddenly speeding up, "I'm gonna get you. You'll regret this!" Once she had gotten close to Kestrelswoop, she started trying to bonk him in the side with her own tail, but soon she realized that it was difficult, so she decided to go for something much better! Wolfblaze slowed down a bit to get behind Kestrelswoop instead, quickly said, "You're going down!", and leaped at Kestrelswoop, trying to bring him down. Then she realized that she would also go down, and thought for the briefest moment, Wow, this was a bad idea.

The tom couldn't stop the little smirk that grew on his face as he watched her try to reciprocate the whack he'd given her. He kept a brisk pace and only speeding up when she was getting too close. He'd been so caught up basking in the amusement that he hadn't realized what the she-cat was planning. He should've known something was up when she began to slow down just enough to get behind him. The only warning he got was her quick exclamation before she leaped at him.

Kestrelswoop tumbled down with a surprised 'oof', genuinely caught off guard, which was a rare moment for him. The tom huffed as he tried to calm his breathing. He couldn't believe it. He should've seen this coming yet, he allowed himself to be distracted. He grinned as he eyed Wolfblaze with amusement. "Oh! Now you're asking for this!" he growled playfully. That was the only warning she got before he jumped up back onto his paws and used that little moment of surprise to once again whack her head with his tail. He scampered off but not before teasingly calling out a "C'mon slowpoke! The prey aren't going to catch themselves." He was hoping she'd be down for a bit of a friendly hunting competition. Now that they were in a more lively mood, their little hunting patrol would hopefully be twice as fun and entertaining.

Shaking her head as she slowly rose from her position on the ground, Wolfblaze felt her head get whacked again. Laughing, she couldn't help but call out after him, "Man you're impossible! I can't believe this is the treatment I get for hunting with you!" Smiling, she began to trot after him, catching up after a little while. "Ok ok, since you clearly are asking for a beating that I cannot legally give you, I'll beat you another way! Hunting competition. First to what, two prey, three prey? You can help with the rules I want this to be fair so that way every bragging right I earn is undisputed." A cocky smirk appeared as she uttered the challenge. She wasn't about to let Kestrelswoop get away with this...this assault of her! Like being smacked with a tail repeatedly demands retribution! Also, this was a good way to bring back some prey for the clan, which was the whole point of a hunting patrol. But the tail smacking, she couldn't let him get away with it!

He didn't think his grin could grow more but it did. His green eyes sparkled with mirth as he listened to the she-cat propose a hunting competition and bragging rights as retribution. Perfect! She was thinking the same thing as he'd been, well, somewhat. This should be a doozy... and Kestrel was actually looking forward to it!

"Settle down Wolfblaze!" he laughed. "I'm down for a hunting competition, for sure. Let's do 'first to three wins'. However, one of those catches has to be either a frog, a toad, or a lizard. The other two are up to our preferences. There will be no limit as to how long we take to complete this but the winner will obviously be the first one to get it done. There will be no penalty if we lose a catch but it'll only slow us down so we'll have to try our bests to hunt well. Apart from getting bragging rights, I think that the winner, for a moon, should be allowed to have the loser complete one chore or duty of their choice that they don't want to do each day up until the moon's over." He allowed himself to take a breather. Gosh, setting up rules for a competition is a chore in and of itself. He nudged the she-cat with a gentle yet playful paw. "What do you think? All this fine for you?"

Laughing with Kestrelswoop, Wolfblaze couldn't help but reply, "When have you ever known me to calm down?" With a smile, she listened to his arguably much better rules, and nodded along with them. "Those are great! You're very good at this, you sure you haven't planned hunting competitions before?" With that said, and a wink, she ran off without his reply to hunt, because she really didn't want to do chores for a moon despite her outward appearances.

Within a short time, she caught the scent of a frog in the underbrush. It...was not like the scent of a squirrel or mouse, or anything with fur. Not something she really wanted to be catching in the future if she could avoid it. Crouching to the ground, she stalked for a moment before spotting the thing, sitting quietly on a rock. Once she spotted it, she pounced, grabbing the frog in her claws and digging them in. With a slash, it was dead, and she promptly buried it. That was one!

Kerath snorted and shook his head. "Nope. Although, if I'm actually as good as you say I am then maybe I should start planning more. Could be fun for the clan." The tom stretched his limbs and was about to count them down to start the competition but he was only met with the dust that Wolfblaze left behind as she rushed off to begin. He couldn't help but laugh harder and roll his eyes. Okay then. She was waaay ahead of him it seemed. Better scamper off and start before she beats him in the race to complete the competition.

The warrior wasted no more time and rushed the other way. He kept his ears and eyes in high alert as he carefully scanned his surroundings, mentally urging the prey to appear so he can hurry and catch them. After minutes of searching, he was struck with luck as he spotted a toad not too far from where he stood. He sucked in a breath and dropped down into a hunting crouch and very cautiously approached the bumpy critter. As soon as he was at an acceptable distance away from it, he pounced.

He smirked as he caught the creature and killed it before it could even move an inch. Good! That's one of three. He buried it and hurried off again in search of his next prey to snatch.

Wolfblaze wandered for only a short time before picking up another scent, the scent of a squirrel. At least she was almost certain she could catch a squirrel! Frogs were kinda slimy sometimes, but at least a squirrel had fur. After a little while stalking, she finally caught sight of her prey, chewing on something. Its back was turned, it was completely unaware. Wolfblaze stepped forward, inching ever closer, yet as she did so, something cracked beneath her weight. The snap caused the squirrel to start running. Despite the chase that ensured, squirrels could climb trees, and Wolfblaze was not nearly as adept at it as a squirrel. "Foxdung!" She murmured as she began the process again. She might lose this after all, but she wasn't out yet.

It didn't take too long for the tom to encounter another small creature to catch -thank goodness- and he stepped back a bit as to make sure he didn't spook it. This time, it was a plump mouse. A pretty good size. He'd be very proud if he managed to catch this one. Speaking of catching, he began to wonder how Wolf was doing with her hunting. Honestly, both of them were probably pretty equal with their abilities. He wouldn't say that out loud lest he inflated her ego more. He just had to be careful and try his best. He wouldn't be sour if he lost but that didn't mean he didn't have his eyes on the prizes.

The brown and white warrior crouched down and stepped lightly toward the little critter. He needed to be extra careful with this one. Mice were known to be rather quick and they evaded well. It's why he wasted no more time and launched himself at it once at the safest distance, paws ready to capture.

Another well-earned success! He let out the breath he didn't even know he was holding and quickly killed it in one bite. Thank StarClan! He got up and buried his catch as he'd done before and continued on the path he chose to find prey. This one would be his last catch! If he managed to get it, he'd probably be the winner... unless Wolfblaze was also on her second catch. If that was the case, they were neck and neck and that was making him rather nervous. No! He had to stay positive. He couldn't lose his cool now.
