With something for her one-track mind to latch onto, Thrushnose could soldier on for as long as ThunderClan needed. In making her Honeypaw’s mentor, Nettlestar had given her that something. She wasn’t the best teacher—her first apprentice hadn’t made it to warriorhood—but she intended to be a good one despite the circumstances. No, because of the circumstances. With more mouths to feed and warriors vanishing into Asylum’s clutches overnight, the arts of hunting and self-defense mattered more than ever.
First, she approached some Asylum cat, a meek badger-wearer, and asked him to wait by the camp’s entrance. (It was best, she’d learned, to pick out a supervisor before going on patrol, lest some brute like Akhlut show up instead. Even if Honeypaw wasn’t the nervous type, Thrushnose wasn’t taking any chances.) Then she made her way to the apprentices’ den and sat outside it, tail curling around her paws as she watched the first rays of cloud-dulled light poke through the trees. Though she’d told Honeypaw to be awake by dawn, she wanted to see if Honeypaw remembered that on her own. Besides, a half-asleep apprentice was often too asleep to learn. Thrushnose could afford to wait. She leaned against the den's side, letting out a quiet sigh.
