Feel the Wind All Around [CLOSED]

Willowdance stretched, looking around camp. She hadn’t been heading out too much, but that had to change. After all, the fresh-kill pile wasn’t doing so well. SkyClan had a humongous amount of strong Warriors, but that came at the expense of fresh-kill vanishing more quickly.

”Do anyone want to come on a hunting trip with me?” She called to the various cats milling around camp loudly.

Ashstorm was mad and bored.  Nothing was really wrong at the moment, but the memory of what the Asylum seemed to make her angrier and angrier every day.  For most cats it seemed to be the opposite.  She was preety sure that most had gotten used to the Asylum, as Ashstorm thought she had, although the thought of never having gone to a Gathering, never really seeing or meeting cats from other clans began to irritate her.  Some of the things she was most hoping for about becoming a Warrior vanished when the Asylum came and she was barely aware of it till now.

A voice broke through her thoughts.  Finally, something to do. She thought, trying to think positively again, even though it was hard.  "I'll go!" Ashstorm responded.

"I'll go too, I guess," another voice spoke.  Ashstorm turned around to see that it was Shira, the Asylum cat who nearly killed Copperfox.  Shira was going on the patrol so that they would not have to worry about finding an Asylum cat to accompany them on the patrol, but that did not make Ashstorm feel better.

Ashstorm turned back to Willowdance, smiling.  Thankfully, one of the things Dawnhawk taught her was how to convincingly portray fake emotions, such as the happy smile she had shown just then.

The part of Jaypaw that had spent the last moon having crouching techniques hammered into her head by a long-suffering Honeycomb balked at the idea of yet another lesson. When she thought about twice, however, it began to sound like a much better idea. Not every hunt was a lesson, right? Warriors didn’t teach each other how to creep up on squirrels, and all the cats gathering for the patrol certainly looked like warriors. Besides, it’d be nice to hunt under someone else’s watchful eye for once. Maybe they’d put in a good word for her with Wolfstar!

That settled it. “I’m coming, too!” Jaypaw meowed as she trotted toward the older cats, muzzle raised. “As long as we don’t go to the creek. I hate it there.” Moonlit Creek had frozen into a sheet of smooth, solid ice—but ice could become water, and water was wet, and there was already too much wet in the world for Jaypaw’s liking right now. A not quite-SkyClan scent hit her nose, and she fixed the Asylum rogue with a stare. That wasn’t the cat who’d hauled Jaypaw away while she’d been trying to defend SkyClan’s borders, so she didn’t care too much, but it made sense to know the names of one's patrolmates. “Who are you?”

"Shira," she coldly responded to the young cat.  She did not care about that cats name at all.  She looked around at the group.  A young warrior, an emotional Dawnhawk family member, and a kit that we need to take care of.  What fun this will be. She sarcastically thought.  She had not accompanied cats on too many other patrols and felt like she had no idea what to do next.  "So, should we get going?" She asked the other cats and waited for a reply.

Willowdance glanced around at the small group that had gathered, flashing a grin at Ashstorm and Jaypaw, while giving Shira a slightly more cautious glance. She was an Asylum member, after all, so Willowdance was a little more nervous about her. "I'm Willowdance!" She introduced herself to the other members of the patrol. With that, she led the group off without taking much notice of what the group was doing to Shira. If Shira was a little nicer, Willowdance might have pitied her, but no.

Once the patrol had went a good distance into the woods, Willowdance spotted a squirrel in the distance. She waved her tail to inform the rest of the patrol to stop, then began to stalk after the creature. She took three steps after the squirrel and sprang. Her claws fell square onto the squirrel, and she killed it quickly with a bite before returning, grinning at her success.

Jaypaw’s stare faltered. For exactly three heartbeats, she was taken aback, stunned into silence. Older cats from SkyClan and Asylum alike tended not to treat apprentices as their equals, but she’d never been faced with such obvious disdain before. The shock didn’t last long. Jaypaw blinked up at Shira once; then her muzzle wrinkled. “Jaypaw.” With that less-than-biting retort, she spun on her heel and marched after Willowdance and Ashstorm, white-tipped tail waving high. At least the other two cats seemed nice.

Willowdance was the first to break off from the group. She returned shortly after with a squirrel, the patrol’s first success. Taking that as a cue to start hunting, Jaypaw ventured off through the trees. A thread of sparrow-scent led her onward. Birds were her favorite thing to hunt, and not just because she was named after one; being able to catch something that could soar fox-lengths out of reach in seconds came with a special sort of pride. Besides, Shira had given her something to prove. Fixing her eyes on the sparrow at last, the fluffy apprentice sank down, then shot forward, snagging her target's feathers in her claws. A swift bite, and it was dead. She rose, letting out a sound of dismay as some clumps of snow clung to her fur, and hurried to meet the others with the sparrow held aloft. Let's see Shira do that!

Jaypaw attempted to catch Bird, using 5 stamina. The attempt was successful!

Shira dipped her head when the apprentice attempted to give her a nonfriendly introduction back at her.  Despite what that cat... Jaypaw, thought, it did not faze Shira at all.  At this point, cats not being kind or friendly to her was absolutely normal.  She kept an eye on every cat in the group, even when they broke off from the group.  Willowdance came back with a squirrel, which made Shira quite impressed with the young warrior for how fast she managed to catch it, even though she, herself, wasn't much older.  Jaypaw came back with a sparrow, carrying it proudly, almost seeming like she was trying to show off how good her catch was to Shira.  Sure, I can play that game. She thought.

Shira, honestly, did not really like birds, but she would meet up with Spark soon and she knew he liked them, so might as well catch one for him... and to show this apprentice a lesson.  She spotted a blue jay, hopping around on the ground hoping to find some worms.  It was only two fox-lengths away from her, so she got into a hunting stance, walked slowly towards it, and pounced.

The bird spotted her and opened its wings beginning to take flight.  But as it began to fly, Shira leaped upward and scratched down the birds stomach, causing it to fall.  Shira was able to easily bite into its flesh, watching the blood spill and it quickly die.  She picked it up in her mouth and walked towards the group, looking at Jaypaw.

Tension seemed high among the group members, Willowdance noted. Quickly, she stepped between Jaypaw and Shira. "Guys, guys-we're here to catch prey, not to fight one another! Could we save personal quarrels for after we get back to camp please? Just bear with each other for now." She told the duo. If it worked it was the best case scenario. If it didn't, their anger would be directed towards her instead which would be fine as well. Either way, it would work out eventually.

Shira glared at Jaypaw, but didn't say a word.  Shira then just kept hunting.  Meanwhile, Ashstorm thought that the kit-like game they were playing was stupid, and broke off from the group to do some hunting of her own.  She spotted a rat and carefully walked up to it.  She jumped forward, attempting to catch the small animal. It spotted her when she jumped and quickly ran into some bushes. She stomped her front paw down angrily and then went back to join the group.
