Though Jaykit, unlike most of her peers, had no desire to investigate the powdery substance that had settled outside the nursery overnight, the prospect of a contest—of taking first place in a contest in front of everyone that mattered lured her out from her mother’s tail and into the cold. Now she stood in the center of camp, squinting and grumbling about the chill and the wet and the blinding whiteness around her. Her thick fur hung close to her legs and the underside of her tail. But she wasn’t here to complain. She was here to win. Filing away her discomfort to gripe about later, she leaned forward to fix a narrow-eyed stare on the other kits, as if looking at her competition in this new light would reveal something she hadn’t already seen during their time as nurserymates.

Without another moment’s hesitation, she scurried across the camp. It wasn’t long before she spotted a lump in the snow. Maybe prey? Being used to the mishmash of smells in the fresh-kill pile, she couldn’t really tell, especially with the snow dampening any helpful scents. Jaykit stuck her tongue out at the pile, then began to dig, stopping every few seconds to shake out her paws, until she uncovered her prize…a pawful of earth. ”Boring old dirt,” she mumbled, and turned around to kick the snow back into place. If nothing else, it might slow the others down.

Stonekit wasn’t into competitions but she was interested in honing her skills, she saw this game as a chance to improve and the kit wanted to practice as much as she could before becoming an apprentice. It would be better to be prepared after all. The bitter wind sent a cold chill down her spine as she exited the nursery. She figured that it would be best to try find the prey quickly, the sooner its over she would be able to go back into the comfort of a warm nursery.

Stonekit eyes peered around her, looking for any noticeable bumps within the snow, after a quick scan she spotted one nearby. She padded towards it and began to dig at it with her paw, to her surprise it was just a rock buried within the snow. Stonekit was slightly annoyed, she figured she still had a long ways to go for improvement.

Letting out one last hmph, Jaykit stepped away from the lump of snow. Maybe she should have left it. She’d wasted a lot of time. She took a deep breath, stretched up until she was standing nearly on the tips of her paws, and squinted at the closest of her opponents, a gray, faintly-striped she-kit. Stonekit, thankfully, wasn’t faring any better; a rock sat in the space she’d uncovered. A grin flashed across Jaykit’s face. But she hadn’t won yet. SkyClan’s camp was packed with various nooks and crannies, and most of them were kit-sized, which, for this contest, meant they were prey-sized; one empty pile of snow didn’t mean anything for her or for Stonekit.

Of course, when the next pile of snow she dug up proved to be just as prey-less as the first, Jaykit’s grin promptly twisted into a frown. ”Did they actually hide anything out here?” she complained, batting aside the twig she’d unearthed. Maybe the snow was the problem. She needed to start looking elsewhere…

Stonekit wasn’t concerned about Jaykit. She was perfectly content on letting her win if she wanted it that badly, Stonekit frankly was not very ambitious all she really cared about was improvement. She glanced over towards Jaykit as she heard her dig something up only to find out she failed to find prey once more.

Stonekit’s tail flickered in slight amusement after watching Jaykits frustration grew. She then decided to walk towards the apprentice den to see if anything was hidden. Stonekit came to a halt when she felt a bump in the snow, and began to paw at it.

It revealed nothing and she continued her search.

(Since Jay and Jas became apprentices around the same time, I figure she'd be a kit during this)

Jasminekit padded from her position in the snow, trotting along, in no real hurry. She wasn't very competitive but she did find this activity to be rather fun, would these....games, they were called, happen often? Stopping, she sniffed the air, then proceeded to dig, tossing snow in the air... And maybe accidentally showering her denmates with it, only to find nothing.

Maybe, Jaykit realized as she continued her search, she needed to stop looking for prey entirely. Under all these near-identical heaps of snow, everything was the same. She’d decided against using scent pretty quickly, but after how absolutely useless her eyes had been so far, anything was worth a try. She raised her nose to the air—just in time to get a faceful of snow. “Hey!” she yelped, equal parts surprised and offended as she wheeled around to face Jasminekit. “You can’t do that! I’m trying to smell things!” Of course, talking to Jasminekit meant she wasn’t smelling things. Jaykit shook herself wildly until she’d dislodged every last bit of snow, then lifted her head again. The only scent she could identify was that of leaf-bare itself, cold and plain.

Jasminekit's eyes went wide as moons as she gasped out an apology. "Oh! O-oh no, I'm so sorry!" The molly's ears lowered as she shuffled away, not wanting to make her only friend angrier at her. Her eyes darted around the snow anxiously, wondering around as of in a gaze. Until her foot stepped on something. Something squishy.

With a yelp, she jumped back, barking out apologies. "Oh tree bark! I'm sorry! I'm so, so, so sorry! I-I didn't mean to step on y--" Opening her eyes a fraction she realized she'd been frantically apologizing to a dead sparrow. Embarrassment heated her pelt and she only just remembered to grab the sparrow. Why am I so clumsy?
