Shimmering Waters [Closed]

Shimmerpaw dropped the mouse off on the ground and scooped some dirt over it. That will be brought back to camp later. She took another moment to look over where she had buried the prey, making sure she remembered the location.

In that time, she had heard a loud squawk. Turning, she saw multiple birds flying from the grass. Snowflight must have startled them by accident.

"Happens to everyone with light-coloured pelts." She reassured Snowflight before creeping away as well.

In the distance, a movement and the scent alerted Shimmerpaw to the presence of a squirrel. She carefully crept closer, eyes narrowed, making sure her tail didn't flick about. Then, she pounced.

Shimmerpaw's leap just barely missed, sending her slamming into the ground just to the side. The terrified squirrel fled instantly. Shimmerpaw gritted her teeth in annoyance. She did not recall these prey being so hard to hunt...

She turned to Snowflight. "Do you think we should leave now, before a predator comes along?" She offered. "Or do you want to continue?" Admittedly, Shimmerpaw was a little demoralised.

As Snowflight made his way back toward the trees, focused on keeping his nose up with his usual confidence, Shimmerpaw offered another consolation. ”I guess you’d know,” he murmured. Aside from the darker patches, which were limited enough to be useless as camouflage, her fur was nearly as pale as his. At least fish didn’t seem to notice things like that. When Shimmerpaw left to pursue her own prey (a squirrel, by the faint scent), he remained where he stood, watching quietly. In time, the apprentice turned back with an empty mouth, emptier paws, and a question.

He considered her expression for a long moment. Then, frown deepening, he stared back at the patches of skin and not-quite-kitten fuzz around the bite marks on his rear leg. This early in the morning, some predators were preparing for the day’s rest; others were waking up to take advantage of the relative silence. Staying out here wasn’t worth the risk. Odds were, the commotion from his last pounce had scared off some of the prey in the area anyway. His voice held a hint of a sigh as he said, ”We probably shouldn’t test our luck.” At least they wouldn’t be coming back completely empty-pawed…and the cats who might see them would either be sound asleep or out on their own patrols. Snowflight hurried off into the trees and, easily finding the trunk he'd buried the frog by, retrieved his sole catch. On returning, he asked in a muffled voice, ”Feel up to leading us back?”

Shimmerpaw was very relieved that Snowflight agreed to leaving. She was a little down at the catch rate-1 out of 3 wasn’t exactly good-and she didn’t exactly want to have to fight a predator either.

“Sure.” She answered Snowflight’s question. Finding wherr she had buried her prior catch easily, she picked up the mouse she had caught and, with a glance back at Snowflight, set off.

Hopefully they can avoid everyone on their way back to camp.
