Tongue-Tied....For Once (Closed for Amber)

Ryepaw was sitting beside the apprentice's den, his paws fidgeting impatiently. For a while now his mentor Wildfang had been absent from patrols, so Ryepaw had not gotten to do much outside the camp. Sighing, the young tom flopped down onto his belly with a bored huff, and gazed forlornly out at the camp. Please let there be a patrol going out or something, I can't take any more waiting around!

Ambernose stretched as she padded from the warriors den deciding she would go for a hunt. She went to the camp entrance then paused glancing around before she sat down waiting.

The dark form of a cat moved in the corner of his vision, and the pale ginger tom turned to see a black she-cat sit down by the entrance, looking for others to join her.  Ambernose;  his heart jolting, Ryepaw stood up on shaking paws to approach the beautiful she-cat.  Ever since he had first met her, the young tom had been enamored by her beauty, and couldn't seem to find his voice when he tried to speak with her.  

Taking a deep breath, Ryepaw puffed out his chest and smiled charmingly as he stopped in front of the she-cat.  Meeting her gaze, the tom noticed how the sun shone on her dark pelt, shining the same shade as her eyes.  For a moment he stood wide-eyed, but shook his head quickly before speaking.

"A..are yo..you going out?"  The pale ginger tom's confidence simmered away as he stuttered through a casual greeting, and inwardly smacked himself.  Stupid!  What the heck are you doing?!  Looking down, he hoped the the older cat couldn't see him blushing.

Ambernose blinked as she saw in her line of vision a ginger Tom apprentice come her way chest puffed up. She blinked light Amber eyes and smiled some. She remembered when she first met him and she smiled seeing the apprentice as a friend."yeah...I'm going out would you like to join?"she mewed.

Ryepaw was glad to see that the older she-cat didn't seem to notice his embarrassing flub, and heaved a quiet sigh of relief. Growing excited, the tom nodded vigorously in response to Ambernose's question, and shifted from paw-to-paw. Out in the forest, with Ambernose? Alone? What could be better luck! Maybe I could impress her...

"Alright then lets go in not much for a big patrol on the morning"She mewed honestly."to be honest unless I'm ordered to join a big patrol I don't usually go in a big patrol"she admitted and the black furred she cat lead the way out the Greig patch of sunlight that hit her ginger nose stripe made it glow briefly. She smiled some

His heart pounding, Ryepaw trotted after the she-cat when she exited the camp. Trailing a little bit behind her, he replied; "Y..yea! I don't really like big patrols either!" Suddenly his mind kicked in; What are you saying idiot? You love big patrols! Ryepaw shook it off, and ran ahead a few paces to walk side-by-side with Ambernose. "Small patrols are better, so that you......" For a moment the young tom grasped for words. "So that you.....don't scare off the prey as easily!" His voice had become high-pitched and squeaky on the last statement, so he cleared his throat. Wow, so smooth Ryepaw! Sighing, he began to scent the air for prey.

"Yeah that's one reason"Ambernose mewed tail flicking as she padded on into the territory.

Ryepaw followed Ambernose as she padded farther into the marshes.  Scenting the air, he picked up the scent of prey.  Ears perked, he began to stalk among the bushes, signaling with his tail for silence.  Finally he caught sight of his quarry; a....rabbit?  For a moment the young tom was surprised; traditionally WindClan's prey didn't stray very far across the border, if they left the moor at all.  Maybe all the new-leaf growth had lured it here.

Why wonder about why it's here?  It's a chance to impress the cat of your dreams!  His eyes narrowing, Ryepaw took a few more steps forward and leaped at the creature. The large animal was alerted, it's large ears catching the sound of his paws pounding on dead leaves. It bounded away, leaving Ryepaw behind with a disappointed look on his face. Not daring to look over and see Ambernose's probably amused face, he trudged deeper into the marsh, extremely ashamed.

Ambernose blinked nodding slowly as she fell quiet and remained that way. The she cat watched him for a moment as he went after what she caught the scent was a rabbit. She found it very strange but she didn't question it.

Trying to regain his fractured confidence, Ryepaw took a deep breath and stepped out from behind the bramble bush he was hiding behind. Putting on a forced smile, he purred "I didn't catch it, leave those wily things to WindClan!" Puffing out his chest, he flashed the she-cat a slightly arrogant smile, before sitting back. Flicking his fluffy tail, he meowed "You can go next, m'lady."

Ryepaw rose to his paws, waving his fluffy tail joyfully.  A beaming smile on his face, he dashed up to Ambernose and purred; "Great catch!"  He almost began to lean his head in to nuzzle her neck, but snapped back just in time.  Hoping she hadn't noticed his almost embarrassing action, he turned away and began to scent the air.  Sensing a lizard, he dashed around to where it lay sunbathing on a rock, and pinned it easily, snapping the scaly creature's spine. It's legs and tail dangling from his mouth, he brought his catch back to where Ambernose had hers, and buried the two under a tree.
