Beepaw's border patrol

Mapleclaw sat outside of the RiverClan camp, her head held high as she waited for her apprentice. The RiverClan deputy had a smug look on her face as she sat, running though her mind what Beepaw's training would look like. First they would start out easy...Border patrol with maybe some lessons on how to hunt...No, how to catch fish only, they were going to start easy. Then it would come hunting on land and then battle training. Training was going to be fast and quick, but it was going to form Beepaw into the best warrior that RiverClan would see...Only after herself of course! So second finest warrior, but eh, details...Her gaze flickered toward the entrance of the camp, hoping that Beepaw would hurry. She wanted to start training as soon as they could, after all, the sooner the better!

Beepaw blinked his eyes open, stretched, padded out of the den. Looking to the sky, he remembered about his border patrol; Mapleclaw would be waiting, he realized. He looked around, but with his mentor nowhere in site, decided she must be waiting outside. Swiftly, he left the camp, found Mapleclaw not too far away. "Morning, Mapleclaw!" he mewed in greeting, "Sorry, a overslept a tiny bit."

Mapleclaw frowned a bit, but nodded as she got to her paws. "That is fine, Beepaw, but please, do try to be on time," she said as she turned and padded into the territory. Her steps were swift, but slow enough that Beepaw would have no trouble keeping up.

Beepaw nodded "I will," he mewed before padding after his mentor. The pace was faster than he was used to, but he still managed to stay right behind Mapleclaw. As he went, Beepaw looked around, taking in the territory for the first time. He tried to memorize as much as he could while still keeping up with his mentor.

Mapleclaw finally came to a stop; mostly because she had to. A few fox-lengths away from the warrior, the ground gave way to a large, steep cliff. The sound of raging water could be heard from the bottom of the large gorge. The warrior took a small step forward, tasting the air. She could just barely smell the scent of the WindClan border; which made sense as the WindClan was of course marking their side on the opposite side of the gorge. At least the mangy rabbit-eaters were keeping to their side...The deputy snorted as she glanced at Beepaw, clearing her throat a bit. "Welcome to the Gorge," she said with a favor of distaste. "Running at the bottom of this pit is a fearsome river, and if a cat falls into the gorge, it is unlikely that they will survive it. The gorge also serves as part of our border with WindClan, and if you take a deep breath, you can smell part of the WindClan border. If we follow upstream of the gorge, we will find that there is a river that is a much easier way for us to get across to the moor if we ever wanted. Of course, it is rare that WindClan ever steps foot on our land due to the fact that we are surrounded with water and the only way across without getting your paws wet is for a small bridge. The rivers keep us protected from the other Clans, but it doesn't keep them safe form us." She added the last bit with a small chuckle, before returning her gaze to the gorge. "Take a good look, Beepaw. I don't want to see you near this place unless you have to. It is a dangerous place, even for the mightiest leader."

Beepaw stopped beside his mentor. He mimicked Mapleclaw, tasting the air, wondering what the scent was, and what was making such a roaring noise. Of course, the deputy cleared up his question quickly. Windclan; the river at the bottom of the gorge. He shivered at the thought of falling down, but the thought was dispelled as Mapleclaw continued about the Windclan cats not wanting to get their paws wet. Such a strange concept to him, a cat that loves water.
He stayed silent as Mapleclaw went on, but upon command, he crept closer, to get a better view. It wasn't too long before he stepped back, frightened of the sheer drop into the raging water. "Don't worry. I'll definitely steer clear" he mewed.

A smile appeared on Mapleclaw's face as she nodded and started to walk toward the Fourtrees, her tail flicking as she beckoned Beepaw to follow her. "Very good, that is what I was hoping to hear." As she walked, she cleared her throat a bit. "Following the Gorge upstream will lead us to a river that is more easier to cross, and then finally to Fourtrees." She then grew quite as she led the way to Fourtrees until they had found the clearing with the four mighty oaks looming over them. Sitting in the middle as always was the grand rock that the leaders spoke from every full moon. "And here we are; Fourtrees. Are you know, the Clans gather here every full moon for a gathering. This was also a sight of the famous battle with the Deomitiles. Of course, I was born shortly after the battle took place but I've heard many tales of it."

Beepaw padded along behind his mentor as she led the way to Fourtrees, trying to take in everything as he went. When they came to a stop at the clearing, the young tom couldn't help but look around in awe. I wonder what it looks like during the full moon? he thought. At the mention of the Deomitiles, the apprentice suppressed a shudder. "It's crazy that so much can happen in just this single place," he mewed.

"Indeed," Mapleclaw sighed, taking a step into the clearing. "This place is usually a sign of peace, but now I believe it also a sign of the Clans; that nothing can stop us when we work together. When we were against a force that was to much for one Clan to handle alone, all of the Clans stood tall together and forced back the Deomitiles. But hopefully, another battle like that will never happen again," Unless Eagleclaw's power goes straight to his head once he gets it... She added with a soft hiss to herself, before shaking her head and headed toward the ThunderClan border. "Come on, we just need to make everything is calm at the ThunderClan border and then I can teach you how to fish."

Beepaw continued to look at the four oaks as Mapleclaw spoke. A symbol of the Clans, huh? That's an interesting statement; I like it he thought. "Yeah, another battle like that would be devastating, wouldn't it?" he mewed, shaking his head at the thought. He seemed to perk up at the mention of fishing. "Okay, let's go then," he mewed, before padding after his mentor.

"Indeed it would, indeed it would," she muttered as they walked along the path before finally coming to a stop in front of one of the many rivers that ran though the RiverClan territory. She dropped into a crouch, and motioned for Beepaw to do the same. She gave the water a look of distaste, but quickly put on her poker face. No way was she showing her apprentice that she didn't like water! "Now, fishing is always a hard task the first time around, and it requires waiting and silence." She nodded toward one of the many faint outlines of the fishes that could be seen in the middle of the river, few daring to swim close to the two cats. "You need to wait for a fish to move close to you, and when you feel that the shadow that you see is close enough, you want to dart your paw in, hook onto it, and pull it out. Of course, water can always be tricky so even thought you may see the shadow, the fish may not be in that right spot so you need to use your common sense to figure out where the fish really is." She grew quiet, watching the fishes move around in the water as she waited for one to foolishly move close to her. Finally, a shadow passed right past her, and she quickly threw her paw into the water in hopes of grabbing it. She felt the scales of the fish rush across her paws, but as she attempted to dig her claws in, the fish proved to fast and was already gone. Mapleclaw pulled her wet paw out of the water with a small mutter, shaking the water from it. "I was close, but you always need to be speedy when you strike. How about you try?"

Beepaw mimicked his mentor as she crept up to the water's edge, listening intently as she explained the process of fishing. He watched the fish-shadow movements closely, trying to figure out where they were really. He frowned at Mapleclaw's failure, but tried to learn from it, nodding as he was told to try it himself. He watched as the little fish swam to and fro, finally one came just close enough and bam Beepaw shot out his paw at the shadow.

Mapleclaw frowned a bit, but nodded as she watched her apprentice fail to catch the fish. "Don't worry, like I said it can always be hard the first time. Why don't you try again, Beepaw? Remember, try to figure out where the fish really is in the water before you strike."
