POPPYSTAR
Just stop your crying...
[OOC: This takes place after the September Gathering and before the October Gathering. Sorry it’ll be a tight fit! I will be replying to this topic tomorrow or on Thursday to keep things moving and avoid too much soup.]
Those of RiverClan who had stayed to help fight instead of getting the vulnerable back to camp slowly dragged themselves through the forest and back to camp. Poppystar instructed Pigeonpounce to look after others in RiverClan who were injured, but thankfully it didn’t look like their clan sustained any terrible injuries.
Poppystar was still bleeding sluggishly when they got back to camp. Her head swam, but she had to check on her clan first. She murmured to Pigeonpounce to wait and heal her after that. If any cat was missing, she needed to ensure that warriors could go looking for them, and they needed stricter patrol teams in case more wolves lurked in the forest.
“RiverClan, gather under the Willow Branch!” Poppystar called in as strong of a voice as she could manage. She leapt onto the branch and winced as it aggravated the wound in her chest. Breathing was difficult and she felt like she had a broken bone (or maybe multiple) in her chest. Her mouth still tasted of blood, and she probably looked like an awful haggard mess, but she had to check on her clan.
She looked over everyone, trying to take count of the cats and search for any horrid injuries. “Thank you to those who helped our queens and apprentices back to camp…If anyone has been injured, see Pigeonpounce immediately. I want no infections…For those not in attendance, the Gathering was interrupted by two wolves that attacked. Tell me, is anyone missing from the chaos?”

Duckfeather had been on guard - it had been a standard day, no exhaustion but they still didn't like going to the Gathering where they could avoid it lest their tiredness arise at any moment. Perhaps it was for the best thought, eyes widening as they spotted the battered group return. Their mouth parted to ask what had happened, but their voice failed them as they waited for them all to step into the camp before they followed in - staying near the entrance so they could return to their post once this was all over.
Their ears slicked back as Poppystar started the meeting - calling out for the injured to see their medicine cat and explaining that there was... Wolves. A startled hiss escaped from Duckfeather as their fur fluffed - the beasts had become a common sight in their nightmares and the shadows that haunted them sometimes between falling asleep and waking up. They couldn't deny the relief of staying home - how would they have reacted to seeing the beasts again in the fur? Drawing their tail around them, they remained silence - everything had been all clear at the camp but... Was everybody accounted for? It was hard to tell at a glance as they waited for those who had gone to the Gathering to speak up.

Wisteriakit _
Wisteriakit's nose twitched in her sleep. She tasted something in the air... it was a scent she wasn't familiar with yet, one that gave off a bad feeling, one that made her feel cold and somehow ceased the persistant rumbling in her belly. It startled her awake, and she got to her paws with an uneasy lurch. Padding forward towards the nursery entrance, she peered out into camp, the moonlight casting an eerie glow on the trees and rocks.
Now that she was fully awake, she could smell the scent better. Is that... blood!? Wisteriakit stiffled a gasp as Poppystar entered the clearing and leapt onto Tallbranch. Her usual grace was gone however, and her pelt was shiny, slick with something dark and sticky. "Mama? Milk, Herring, Loon, you hafta wake up!" she whispered urgently, turning back towards her family.

Swandive padded back to camp with the rest of the clan, her nostrils clogged with the stench of blood still. None of it was hers, but the way Poppyshine was moving worried her. The wolf had done some damage clearly, even if the leader still stood. She was just grateful that none of her siblings had been snapped up by those massive jaws or been so carelessly knocked away by those huge paws of the beasts.
Entering camp, Swandive sat, an ear flicking at Poppyshine's voice calling the clan to gather. She glanced over the returning cats, but didn't think anyone was missing at least. Right now the warrior was ready to curl up in her nest.

Herringkit
✩
His tufted ears flicked asymmetrically atop a messy head of fur. Herringkit always woke up with the wildest pelt, which is why he meticulously cleaned it first thing each morning. But... it wasn't morning. He blinked his eyes open ever so sleepily. "Teri, what's wrong?" Something must be wrong for his sister to wake them so early.
Then he smelled it too, his pink little nose scrunching in distaste. Yes, something was very wrong. Herringkit was no longer sleepy, blinking at Wisteriakit with wide eyes. His small, scraggly-furred body began to tremble.
"Riverclan, gather under the Willow Branch!" It was Poppystar's voice that gave him the courage to peek out of his nest and cling to his sister's side. "What's happening?" he whimpered, "Is everyone okay?" He looked up at Poppystar with extreme worry. She was definitely not okay. Then she said something Herringkit didn't quite believe at first. "...the Gathering was interrupted by two wolves that attacked."
His thoughts ran rampant. Attacked?? At the gathering?? Wolves?? Herringkit simply couldn't stop shaking, almost on the verge of tears. The gathering was supposed to be safe! Everyone was supposed to be safe! What are wolves? Are the wolves coming? Are they going to hurt us again?

Snailpaw
He/Him
Snailpaw, miraculously, made it back unscathed.
Even considering the fact that he hadn't fought, it was a mystery as to how the minimal amounts of blood that clung to his feet weren't his-- and how his fur was merely ruffled from his running and his fright.
He was on high alert and adrenaline high after the gathering, but as Snailpaw trudged towards the Willow Branch..
..He felt the kind of peace you can only feel after making it back home from a situation this intimidating.
Having it out as alive as I have is a miracle.. May the stars be with those injured on this night. He thought of no one in particular--for he knew very few other cats--as he sat a tail-length away from under the Branch.

Dovetail rarely went to Gatherings these days as it was--but with Murkyriver feeling so ill and a cluster of kits to look after, he took the excuse to remain at home in the nursery and watch over those who mattered to him. When the scent of blood greeted the him from the returning party, he couldn't help but feel grateful he had not attended, though that sensation quickly found itself swallowed up in alarm and worry. Wolves? The only time he'd ever seen wolves had been... at the lake. Unbidden, long since pushed to the corner of his mind, his most traumatic memory resurfaced; Egretswoop, Milk, his mentor and older sister family, crushed to death and mangled by an enormous pair of fangs. White fur marred scarlet. He struggled for a moment with the image before reality arrived again. The Gathering had been interrupted by wolves. If everyone was here, and everyone was okay, then everything would be fine--surely there hadn't been as many as last time? He didn't see any bodies in an immediate scan. Besides, his family was all here, and... no, wait. They weren't. Swandive. Oh, stars. Pidge. Swandive and Pigeonpounce had been there. A brief search showed the pelt of Swandive, but no sign of his other sister yet. Was she okay? What had happened?
He wanted to check immediately--but the piping voices of his kits demanded his attention first. Take care of what he had right now, and then worry later. Though it was difficult, with anxiety trembling through every one of his veins, Dovetail did his best to remain stable and calm his breathing. One thing at a time. One thing at a time. Pidge will be okay... she has to be. If something bad had happened to her, Swandive would not look so calm. Pale blue eyes lowered with some difficulty to the level of the ground, where his kits peered terrified from the entrance of the nursery. Before anything else, he had to answer Wisteriakit's urgent summons and Herringkit's trembling queries. First he bent down to press a comforting nose to the top of his daughter's head. "I'm here, Wisteria. No need to worry." A large brown paw drew Herringkit closer, pressing the small tom into his soft fur. "Hey, everything is okay. You're safe here." Dovetail sat close by his kits, comforting himself as much as them with the steadiness he managed to keep in his voice. "If we were in danger, then Poppystar and the warriors would be defending our camp, not calling a meeting. Everything is all right, see? Besides, even if anything were to break into camp, I'd be here. I won't let anything lay a paw on you two, trust me." He would protect them with every breath. That thought, if nothing else, kept him focused. If the wolves were still out there, he would hunt down every last one of them to keep his kits and his siblings safe. His family... Pidge. Once more, his gaze scanned the crowd, searching in vain for the medicine cat. She had to be okay. So why didn't he see her?

ROWANSONG
I want for us this...
From the first howl, it had been impossible for Rowansong to rest again. Wolves. Returned. It was impossible to tell the number, what with the way their voices bounced and dimmed against the trees, but it was easy enough to discern that they were coming from the heart of the woods. Of course they were--they were beasts made of bloodthirst, and an entire sea of supposedly-easy prey was waiting passively in one spot for them. Rowansong could not get himself to lay still, nor could he close his eyes without visions of carnage, the phantom sensation of feeling and pain in limbs he could no longer control, overwhelming him. He idled near the river surrounding at camp, batting at minnows and hissing when he missed.
Eventually, two things caught on the air: the scent of blood, and shortly thereafter, the pad of many paws. Rowansong was maneuvering away from the riverbank to carry himself toward the center of camp. It wasn’t before Poppystar came through the reeds at the helm of the Clan--bloodied, haggard. Rowansong’s breath caught in his throat at the sight of her. His head spun with visions of the night wolves had descended upon them at the lake; of the death they had left. Rowansong wanted to move forward, intercept Poppystar on her path toward the Willow Branch, insist that she needed treatment first and foremost and that she was certainly in no condition to be making that leap, but his forepaws would not move to drag him forward. He just angled his head to watch her cross camp, mouth slightly agape.
Though he wanted to, Rowansong grit his teeth against protesting the meeting that was called. Instead, he settled in among his Clanmates--close to the Willow Branch’s shadow, right beneath Poppystar.
Rookflight stayed close to Willowwisp as RiverClan trudged back to camp. They kept their head raised to look ahead for sight of Larkspring and Cindersky, but they did not venture from her to find them. It was impossible to tell how far ahead the two of them had already gone; how long Rookflight risked being from her side. More fiercely than they had felt nearly anything before, they were determined to stay close to Willowwisp in the wake of the night’s terror. They were a continuous shoulder to rely on if she found any difficulty walking after being dismounted from the Rock. They were steady. Rookflight’s commitment was so intense that they thought, perhaps foolishly, that they could shield Willowwisp from anything single-pawed should any more threats come for them tonight.
Only when they reached camp did Rookflight dare to venture away from Willowwisp’s side. They tipped their head close to her ear and murmured, ”I will be back shortly.” He lingered for a moment just to look over her, to ensure one last time that Willowwisp was unscathed, before moving away to search the crowd for Larkspring, Cindersky, and Sunpool.
Pigeonpounce didn’t know what to do with herself on the way back to camp, or upoon returning. She wanted to cling to Swandive and Scarletflare both, to make sure they were both alright, but she couldn’t. Not with Poppystar looking the way she did. Pigeonpounce walked close to her as RiverClan made their way back home. She tried, a pawful of times, that Poppystar rest when they get back to camp, that she let herself be looked after. The denial of her request made the pit of anxiety that had opened in her stomach with the first howl grow wider.
Pigeonpounce didn’t have it in her to look up at Poppystar when she took her place up on the Willow Branch. The sight of her, wounded and bloodied, made Pigeonpounce’s gut clench too tightly. Instead, she let her attention be guided toward the nursery, the sound of scared, chirping kits; more importantly, their father. Pigeonpounce’s paws tumbled over themself, but only for a few paces before she stopped short. She couldn’t barge in to demand his comfort when Dovetail was providing that for his kits--kits. A presence she was still reeling over. Pigeonpounce backpedaled a step, nearly tripping onto her haunches before she caught herself. At the sound of her name in Poppystar’s voice, she finally looked up. Then she swallowed, looked toward Dovetail and then for Swandive and Scarletflare, and shuffled toward her den to ready herself for the injured.

Kitespring didn't like what happened. The wolves attacking... it reminded her of when they were driven away from the lake all those moons ago. As Poppystar gathered the clan around, the russet she-cat quickly moved to a spot where she could see the RiverClan leader well - stars, she looked so much worse than she had thought. How did she not notice?
It was fine. RiverClan's leader probably had to make some sort of announcement anyways. Then Kitespring could pester her to get her wounds treated so she didn't die.

Cindersky
I loved you...
Cindersky was fine, having made it back in one piece. So was everyone else. Relatively. They were alive, and that was good. She had waited for Poppystar and the rest of the group to return after escourting those that were vulnerable back. How injured their leader was made her gut twist, and even standing near her now, hearing the panicked warbling of Herringkit, she felt it twist more so.
That calm settled in. The horrible calm, when you could stop and think. There was one voice in her mind, as the lull settled over. The collecting of oneself, Poppystar checking in with the clan, everyone finding their loved ones. One voice, and then followed by another; 'I leapt into the jaws of death for you and Littlesplash,''I can't.' She felt sick, acidic bile rushing up her throat which she forced back down again and jammed her claws into the ground. Her breath was not steady, though she pretended it to be so. She kept her lips as taut a line as she could, eyes fixed on either Poppystar, or whoever she knew. Larkspring. Or Rookflight. She was okay, she told herself, though it was only her claws dug so painfully into the ground that kept her legs from trembling.

WILLOWWISP
A constant uphill run...
Willowwisp walked hollowly back to camp with Rookflight pressed tightly to her side. She still saw the wolf, its maw stretched open wide and its bloody teeth racing towards her. It was behind her eyes every time that she blinked. Her body continued to feel tense like she was expecting another attack to lunge at her. She didn’t have a scratch on her—though maybe that was why she was still so dizzyingly tense.
Her eyes trailed back up to Poppystar where she swayed on the Willow Branch. Her aunt had gotten back up when she was bit. She wasn’t killed immediately like the SkyClan leader had been. But still—she could see the wound through shifted fur and the bright red stains upon her pelt were frightening to see. Her leader’s eyes looked glassy. She wondered if the bite would have killed her had Poppystar not intercepted the attack. It felt so unfair for Poppystar to be enduring all of this pain because Willowwisp had been too foolish not to dodge in time.
“Hmm?” Her eyes moved back to Rookflight when they murmured something to her. They walked off and she watched them before she sank to lay down in the sands of the camp. Her head hurt. She hoped the meeting would not be long so that they could all get some well-needed rest.
Larkspring remained close to Cindersky’s side the entire time. They had rounded up apprentices, queens, and elders, and guided all of them back to camp. The howls and screams from cats had deafened their ears, and Larkspring did wish that he could have stayed to assist, but he would sooner have gone with Cindersky to ensure her safety first.
Now as everyone returned, he did not see too many injuries. The worst came from Poppystar, who looked half dead on her paws and the blood staining half her body was frightening. He wondered if she had lost a life at the Gathering after he had left with Cindersky. He hoped not. A leader was only as powerful as the number of lives they had left.
His eyes found Rookflight wading through the crowd of cats. Larkspring perked up and his tail waved, catching his sibling’s attention. When Rookflight was close enough, Larkspring said, “There you are. Are you alright?” His eyes swept over his body and saw no injuries. “You look okay. Good.”
Poppystar stared out at her clan. Their words sounded distant and warped, like she was listening to them through water. Her vision kept blurring and she had to blink a few times to keep her eyes straight. She tried to count heads as cats chattered and spoke among themselves. There was Dovetail and his kits, keeping them as calm as he could manage. Swandive to the side and edging towards the den, no doubt wanting to rest. Snailpaw was there, Duckfeather too. She saw Rowansong pulling himself towards the front of the crowd, and she wondered for a moment with tense anxiety where Sprucebark had gone, and it took her too long to remember that he was off looking for Elmstorm. There was Rookflight talking with Larkspring. Cindersky would not be far. And then Willowwisp, resting but still uninjured. And Pigeonpounce by the medicine den…
She tried to hold onto each of those names and keep them straight. She counted a few of them twice, skipped over others. Her head was throbbing almost as badly as her side and it still hurt to breath. She could still taste metallic blood in her mouth, and it had soured more as time went on. Perhaps she should have listened to Pigeonpounce, but she wanted to check on her clan first…She seemed to have the worst injuries out of anyone, which was good. She needed to keep her clan safe.
“Any…” Poppystar’s voice sounded weak even to her own ears. She swallows and tried again. “Anyone that has been injured, see Pigeonpounce…” Wait, did she say that already? She felt far away. Was she still talking? She couldn’t seem to control her own mouth. “We’ll improve our…our borders…two at a…til w-wolves…” She looked up at the sky. The stars look so bright tonight. Had they always been that bright, like the eyes of monsters barreling down the Thunderpath? The stars looked beautiful despite their intensity. Maybe she was being watched by StarClan. Maybe by… “Perch…” she mumbled before her weakness became too much for her.
All at once consciousness left her, and with nothing holding up her muscles, her body crumbled at once. She fell like a stone from the raised branch and into the sand below. Inside her chest, her heart beat wildly as it tried to continue pumping what blood she had not lost yet. Similarly, her lungs heaved in heavy breaths despite the sand that coated her tongue with it. Her body remained in overdrive for another few seconds before it decided that it had been too much: too much pain, too much blood lost, too much movement afterwards, and too much waiting. Her heart stopped and her breath stilled. The stars encased her.

"POPPYSTAR!"
Kitespring sprinted towards the willow branch where Poppystar fell, quickly putting her paw on the calico she-cat's chest. The sand had cushioned her fall - but her heart wasn't beating, her chest wasn't rising from the motion of taking breaths.
It's her first, right? She's not going to lose all nine of her lives already, right? Stars, please don't tell me she'll lose all nine lives from that wolf attack. There's no way she'd be taken away from us already, right?
The next thing Kitespring worried about was that she'd do it again. She knew Poppystar well enough that she'd sacrifice each and every one of her nine lives to save her clanmates. Those nine lives would disappear in a few moons - maybe one day Poppystar would throw herself in front of an attack thinking she had more lives than she did, and she'd be gone for good. And Kitespring would have nothing.
Please, wake up.

Kitespring's yowl made Swandive nearly jump out of her fur, pale head snapping up in alarm as she caught sight of Poppystar fall to the ground.
"Poppystar?? Nonono, you can't-" Swandive started forward, then slid to a stop, feeling acid rise in her throat. Swallowing thickly, Swandive took a step back, searching the crowd desperately for Pigeonpounce or Wrensong. They could do something... They had to do something.
Thoughts of Perchstar flashed through her mind. She didn't know what she'd do if the one cat she'd always looked up to, always respected wound up like that.

Cindersky
I loved you...
She watched Larkspring pad away in that fuzzy, pinprick vision of hers. She felt her breathing stutter, a cold rush of air and she could swear her stub was bleeding again with how it throbbed. False pain, she kept telling herself. False pain, like she so often felt. Poppystar was speaking, she could hear her tone above the ringing in her ears. Every time she moved her eyes it was like the drool-dripping, bloodstained teeth of overgrown hounds lunging for her.
Until Kitespring cried out, and the ringing stopped.
She was on her paws in a second, though they felt so unsteady. She caught her stumble, paw sliding along the stand as she whirled around to Poppystars limp, no-- Lifeless,-- form on the ground. She blinked, and the tri-coloured pelt was white and grey for a moment. She blinked again, and set it right. She dived through the group, nudging against Swandive as some way of comfort. This was her first time dealing with this.
"Support her head," She meowed to Kitespring as she reached them, leaning down to confirm that she had lost a life-- No breath. "Pigeonpounce!"
What was she to do? Wait for StarClan to heal her wounds? Poppystar had not experienced this before either, she realised. And whatever fear she felt... She moved, swinging around to in front of Poppystars face. The last thing she needed to see when she woke for the first time was her Clan staring at her in horror. She would be afraid. And if she said she wasn't, then Cindersky would know she was lying. She leaned down, running her tongue along the unwounded parts of her face and neck, to her shoulders and around her ears. Like she remembered her father doing to her all those moons ago in the nursery, when she woke from a nightmare.
"You are okay," She murmured quietly to Poppystars ear. "Take your time. You are alright." If she could hear her.

POPPYSTAR
Just stop your crying...
Poppystar found herself in a place of stars after her vision went dark. She blinked and looked around with surprise. She knew what this place was; it was a place that she dreamed about often after her leader ceremony. (Though it was always just a dream, and never a true vision.) StarClan, full of the cats that she longed to see again. Was she dreaming again?”
“MOM….” came a voice, loud but also quiet and tentative. Poppystar saw her now. Minksplash, standing only a couple of paces in front of her and trembling like a frightened kit. Poppystar’s heart swelled and she rushed forward to press her forehead to her daughter’s, and she murmured softly to try and quell her tears. Minkplash whimpered and rubbed her face against her mother in turn. “I…I’m sorry…Death is n-never fun, Mama…”
Death? Ah…that’s what that was. Poppystar grimaced. She hadn’t realized that her injury had gotten that bad on the walk back to camp. She had only wanted to check on her clan and then she was going to allow Pigeonpounce to treat her straight away. Guilt gnawed at her. She should have listened to her medicine cat and gotten treatment before calling a meeting.
Minksplash lifted her head to look at Poppystar and she pressed against her again. “You did a good job protecting your clanmates…But I’m sorry that you had to die for it. It’s not—It’s not fun.” She looked up at her and smiled despite her watery eyes. “But the stars will put you back together and they’ll get you back…Please be careful if you can. I don’t want to see you back here for a long time.”
Poppystar smiled through her emotions and she nodded. She leaned in and licked the side of Minksplash’s face. “Yes dear. I’m sorry for worrying you. I’ll be careful.” She pulled back and gave her daughter one final smile before the stars around her began to fade.
Back in RiverClan camp, Poppystar’s eyes creaked open. She tasted sand in her mouth and it left her breaths feeling dry and papery. She blinked slowly and registered a quiet voice whispering to her. Right, she died…She thought the voice speaking to her is Cindersky. Her wound still ached, but her head was not quite as fuzzy and distant as it had been on the branch. Poppystar groaned and slowly moved to turn and right herself. She looked up and found immediately in front of her was Cindersky and Kitespring. She saw the fear evident in her eyes and guilt flooded her veins.
She tried to smile up at them, though she still looked tired. “Mmm…For all the times I scolded Perchstar, you would think I would learn to listen to my medicine cat.” It was an attempt at being lighthearted, but she wasn’t sure they were ready to hear it. She shakily pushed herself up to her paws. “I’m sorry to worry you…Cindersky, please finish the meeting for me. I want our patrols to be adjusted to be longer but with more cats on each patrol so there is less danger if those wolves still lurk in the forest. If they come across one, they are not to engage unless forced…The rest I will leave up to you.”
With her instructions given, she started to move toward the medicine den. She had to lean on Kitespring since her full strength had not returned to her yet, and her side still ached from her wound. StarClan could put off another death for a time, but she would still need treatment for something like this. She owed Pigeonpounce an apology as well, for not listening sooner.
