Subject: Foxpaw's Warrior Ceremony Wed Sep 11, 2024 10:25 am
Wolfstar was pleased to see Skyclan's apprentices learning and growing. Tonight there would be a new warrior among their ranks. Wasppaw's request had been an unusual one, to be sure, but it was one she would honor.
"Let all cats old enough to climb a tree gather beneath the tallbranch for a clan meeting!"
And if the world don't break, I'll be shaking it...
Foxpaw was front and center when Wolfstar called the Clan together. He’d been working hard in his training--not that it mattered, because Harespring seemed busy with everything other than watching him progress--and he’d been to the Moonstone, which was a similarly useless endeavor. All StarClan had done was send somebody to scare him. The idea that his life would turn to ruin, simply because of his Clan, his bloodline… Foxpaw had to scoff. Not if he had anything to say about it.
Shaking the shadowy StarClanner’s words from his mind, Foxpaw turned his eyes, blue and blazing, up to Wolfstar. He was certain it was his time. His claws flexed eagerly, pressing into the soft earth. He was ready.
The clan gathered below, and Foxpaw was among them. Time to start. "Foxpaw, step forward." A soft smile flitted across Wolfstar's face. She was proud to see another of her grandkits - great-grandkits - earn their name.
"Skyclan, Foxpaw has trained hard to learn the code and the ways of a warrior, so I commend him to you in his turn. Foxpaw, do you swear to provide for and defend Skyclan, even at the cost of your life?" The ceremonial words were altered, but then, Wolfstar hadn't been one for following tradition too closely. What mattered was the the approval of the cats standing before her, nobody else.
And if the world don't break, I'll be shaking it...
Just as he’d thought, hoped, prayed, his name was called. Foxpaw was on his feet in an instant, moving past the rest of the Clan to take his place in the Tallbranch’s shadow. He tried hard to keep his gaze fixed on Wolfstar, but as she went on reciting old words, he couldn’t help but turn to search the crowd. He didn’t spot Harespring immediately among them. But he was watching, wasn’t he? He had to be. Foxpaw shuffled his weight a bit before his eyes returned forward. A sour feeling crept up the back of his throat but he swallowed it down. Eyes locked on his grandmother once more, he nodded. ”Yeah,” he called back, voice strong despite the not-so-ceremonial agreement. To provide for and defend SkyClan with his life… Foxpaw’s tail snapped to the side behind him. Of course he would. Alongside Breezewhisker’s words, an old meeting with Firetreader floated through his mind as well. No… there would be no ruination for SkyClan, not while he lived. Not while he had something to prove still. ”I do.”
Wolfstar watched as the warrior to-be searched the crowd. For Harespring, perhaps, or his siblings? But his attention was on her once more, and his agreement was as non-traditional as her own words. She couldn't help her lips curving into a grin at that.
"Then I grant you your warrior name. From this moment on you will be known as Foxsnap." With that, the leader leapt from the tallbranch, padding toward the newly-named warrior.
"Congratulations, Foxsnap." She mewed, affectionately bumping his shoulder. "I'm proud of you. You will sit vigil tonight, may it be a peaceful one."
One familiar face, at least, was in attendance. Mistypaw sat in shock as Foxpaw, well, Foxsnap now, got his name before her! This was not how she expected today to go. This was not how she expected anything to go! She wanted to be first! Still, this was her friend and she was happy for him.
