Sprucebark was leaving on his trip early the next morning and yet he could hardly sleep. The moonlight poured down from above.
He stepped silently out of the warriors den restless as ever.
His eyes widened not expecting Cindersky to be up at this hour as well. He went over to her settling down and curling his tail around his front paws very neatly and formally as he always was.
"Tomorrow is the day" he meowed almost to himself.
He looked to his deputy and blinked looking back down at his paws, his sense of duty felt a lot of guilt for being a senior warrior and running off like this, but Poppystar had allowed it and he knew he wouldnt ever forgive himself if he didnt do anything within his power to find his son again.
"Look after mum for me yes?" he asked a quiet request. Though he knew he didnt really even need to ask, Poppystar had chosen her deputy very wisely.
"I plan to swing out wide on the initial loop then grid from there... I- his voice trailed off, he was going to try and give a time estimate but reconsidered, any time estimate might just make them worry more if he was delayed for anything unforseeable.

Cindersky
I loved you...
Cindersky had, once again, found sleep impossible. Easier most days, but some days it was like fighting an uphill battle. Tonight was such a day, and she did not want to bother those in the den with her twisting and turning. She had bade Larkspring farewell (maybe he heard her in his dreams) and stepped out into the cold night air. She could taste the coming Leaf-fall on the breeze.
When Sprucebark approached, she gave him a quizzical look. Tomorrow? It was only when he gave his next request, to look after Poppystar, did it slot into place. She smiled, turning her head to the older warrior and pressing her snout briefly to his shoulder.
"Don't worry about the Clan," She meowed, angling her head up to look him in the eye. She could see the conflict, the usually sure and rigid rule follower battling against part of his nature for ventures of the heart. But a son was Clan enough. More then Clan, even. "It is up to us to worry about that. You keep yourself safe, and get Elmstorm. However long it takes, RiverClan will wait for you."

The journey ahead of him felt daunting, the unknown of it all. He had done what he could to prepare for it. Trained up his land hunting, worked on his sparring in case he and scorchlight should hit resistance of any sort. Still even with all this preparation the looming number of uncertainties and that the orderly rom knew would exist yet couldn’t see yet were ever clear on his mind.
The planning, orderly tom knew this journey would be a test unlike anything he had faced before. Even so, as he looked back at the younger deputy he gave a confident nod, riverclan would be in good paws. He knew so.
“Is there any advise you would give scorch or myself? We will have each other of course but other than that we will be on our own”
The pitting feeling in his stomach churned as he thought about not having an entire clan to have their backs. It was what it would be though.

Cindersky
I loved you...
Be on his own. Something about the way he had said that made her stomach twist and churn. She could not imagine it. She had always been around someone. Even as a kit, even though she had been lonely-- She had never been alone. Always the hum and buzz of the Clan in the background.
What would she want to hear? Or what would she do? She had never given advice like this. She wasn't sure she was even qualified enough to do so. But, Sprucebark asked. He would not ask if he was not searching for something.
"Stay true to one another," She said. "Keep the Code in your heart. Keep StarClan in your mind. Our ancestors will not abandon you. Your love, loyalty, and faith will see you to the end of your journey. They will see to your return. I will miss you, Sprucebark. We will miss you. I will try to stop Poppystar from going sick with worry," Her words broke off with a smile. "I will pray to StarClan for your safety, and for your path to be sure-pawed."

Sprucebark blinked hearing her answer. He felt homesick already even though he was standing right in camp still.
He swallowed hard and had to look away for a bit not immedietly look to her after hearing that. He nodded and gave a little smile, "yes of course, I will. I promise" he meowed softly.
"I will miss you lots too Cinder, stay golden for me."
He sat next to her for a little while longer before getting to his paws once more and left with a little wave of his tail, saying goodbyes were never easy and he held a sinking feeling he would not see her again. He tried to ignore that feeling the best he could, he worried if he stayed any longer he wouldnt be able to leave in the morning to complete his quest
