Oatfluff led Rainpaw out of camp, his tail high in the air as he walked. How exciting! He was getting to train one of his best friend's kits, and he was going to teach Rainpaw how to defend herself. If she couldn't use her words, she could use her claws - well, her paws. He didn't condone violence towards someone's own Clanmates.
His mind wandered a bit as the duo walked. Heatherfrost had gone missing a while ago... she'd bullied him throughout his apprenticeship, even after he was named a warrior. In fact, at his own warrior ceremony, she'd suggested that he didn't even deserve it - and he'd never gotten the chance to prove it to her.
Maybe Rainpaw could prove herself to Creamlily. It would be funny, watching the bitter molly get a taste of her own herbs. He didn't know her well, but if she was always like that... "Is she always like that?" Oatfluff asked. He frowned as he turned to look at his new apprentice. She seemed so sweet. Some part of him felt almost protective of her, and they didn't even know each other yet. "Never mind that. I'll show you how to stand up to her. Just up ahead is a little clearing - I'll show you some basic battle moves. How does that sound?"
It was a pleasant day, too. As they approached the clearing, Oatfluff noted a gentle breeze sweeping across the moor, carrying the gentle scents of marigold and heather. As greenleaf went on, it seemed to range from horrifically hot to oddly nice. Today was one of those oddly nice days. Perhaps leaffall was on the horizon... oh, that'd be nice. He wasn't loving the heat.
Oatfluff stopped, finally, at a nice, open spot where the gorse and long grasses gave way to shorter, softer grass and a few odd plants. He put a few feet between him and Rainpaw, then looked over at her with an encouraging smile. "Alright, Rainpaw. Have you ever done any play-fighting or anything of that sort in the nursery?" Oatfluff asked, curious where he should begin.

Rainpaw followed behind her mentor and already she really liked him, he had just told Creamlily off and she was grateful for it. She didn't know why he was so protective of her already, but she was not complaining, she hadn't ever heard the story of how he was bullied too.
Rapidfire hadn't exactly been super eager to tell the kit that her aunt had bullied her now mentor. So she was oblivious to the fact that he had been picked on in his youth as well, to her, he was so big and strong no one could even possibly pick on him!
She was more fired up than ever to learn now!
Was cream always like that? She gave a silent nod of yes, as long as she could recall Creamlily always was super egotistical, any chance that her or their brother bug might catch up to Creamlily in any area had always made Cream very angry.
She was probably extra that way today since it was Rainpaw's big day, that made Rainpaw all the more committed to wanting to be a good apprentice to Oatfluff... who she just now realized she knew very little about besides his initial grand entrance into her life.
She gave an enthused meow of yes to the question of if she liked the idea of learning how to spar. She was absolutely thrilled by the idea! The more sparring the better, she would be able to finally stand up for herself. As grateful as she was to him for earlier at her ceremony, she wanted to be able to handle herself as well. Not just from Creamlily, but from who knows what was out there.
She gave a little jump into the air and swiped at the emtpy air ahead of her imagining it was some foe. She stumbled on the landing tripping a bit. Scampering back up she laid her ears to her head in subtle embarrassment, well that probably answered his question as to how much practice she had prior to this.
Her 'practice' prior to now had consisted of Cream just holding her down and never letting her or bugkit back up to reset the match, not really a way to learn much at all other than learning that your sister was a whole lot stronger than you and that she wanted you to realize that too.
She shook her head no for prior practice... she felt bad, she wished she was braver to actually speak to him. She had always been a kit of very very few words and the added pressure of her first day training combined with the embarsment of the flopped claw air swipe were not helping the words at all. Her lips were locked shut for today, she hoped he wouldnt mind... and so far he had kept his promise of speaking for two cats.

Oatfluff's whiskers twitched in dry amusement as Rainpaw nodded her head. It was a good thing he hadn't met Creamlily before, then. He wasn't exactly known as a cat with a backbone, but he'd gotten a lot less tolerant of bullies the older he'd grown. He wasn't above a few pointed words if he found it necessary.
As fast as Oatfluff had grown protective of his new apprentice, he knew he wouldn't always be around to protect her. Creamlily could always catch Rainpaw alone. And it wasn't just Creamlily - one day, after Rainpaw earned her warrior name, he might not be able to be by her side in battle. It was important for any young cat to know how to defend themselves, and it would only subject the poor she-cat to more teasing if she couldn't.
When Rainpaw tried to demonstrate a quick jab - and immediately stumbled - Oatfluff tried not to chuckle. It wasn't mean-spirited by any means, but her enthusiasm was sweet. "Oh, don't be embarrassed. Heh, in my first real battle training - a mock battle with the Clan - your mom actually handed me my own tail in two blows." There was a twinkle in his eyes as he remembered it; StarClan, it had been so long ago, he'd almost forgotten. In his defense, he had been sick, but it was still pretty funny. "Every cat has to start somewhere."
He didn't mind that she was quiet. Not in the least. Even Hemlockfox was mostly quiet, and Oatfluff still enjoyed his company. It just meant he got to talk more! "We'll start with the basics, then. You weren't too far off earlier - but let's stay on the ground to begin. Try balancing your weight evenly. When you raise your paw to swipe, your other paws will need to support your weight, so let yourself shift naturally." Oatfluff explained. He demonstrated as he spoke, raising his right paw in the air while letting his other legs support him. "Once you have the motion down, your body will shift your weight without thinking, and you can use your paw for a quick attack, like this -" In one swift motion, he jabbed his paw forward, smacking at the air."When you feel ready, try swiping at me." Oatfluff smiled encouragingly as he put his paw down.
