the dawn [c] Empty
PostSubject: the dawn [c]   the dawn [c] EmptyFri 2 Aug 2024 - 11:25

The sun had just peeked over the horizon by the time Sunfire made it back to the SkyClan border. The scent of WindClan was still strong on his coat, and the conversation with Hemlockfox still fresh in his mind. But he felt... good. For the first time since leaving SkyClan, Sunfire felt purpose again. Some semblance had been there when he was raising Wolf, training the young tom to fight, and be a warrior... but no matter how much clan lore he told his youngest son, no matter how many times he recited the warrior code, or their family tree, or reminisced about days past, there was a hollowness that he just couldn't fill and never would. Out there, regardless of how hard he tried, he would never be at peace because he was not home.

And, he missed his mother.

Sunfire tilted his head back at the base of a massive oak tree, tufted ear flicking. Then he sprang upwards and sank his claws into the trunk, climbing up to the lower branches and settling down on his belly. A long sigh escaped him as he settled in to wait.

Firepaw
Rank: Apprentice

Firepaw was, unsurprisingly, one of the first cats to rise that morning. He usually was, having gotten used to such early starts to his day long ago. After all, how was he supposed to find out what happened to his family? First, it was Sunfire. Then Honeydew, Cinderkit, Dawnkit, Harrierpaw, Blazepaw, Graywind, Mintglade, Hornetpaw...even Ploverwing, who he honestly hadn't known all that well. It seemed as though it was just one thing after another these days, but Firepaw was determined to persevere. He'd find a way to protect those that remained.

However, as the tortoiseshell tom crept silently through the undergrowth, heading a patrol of one, a rather alarming scent caught his attention. WindClan. He didn't panic right away, though. Hemlockfox - his half brother - might be visiting again. There was quite literally little other explanation as to how WindClan scent was straying over the border. Regardless, Firepaw didn't know the surly medicine cat all that well, so he squared his shoulders and strode in the direction of the scent, yellow eyes flicking to and fro suspiciously.

Good news or bad news. It was always something with that tom - he just hoped it was the former today. Though, as Firepaw drew closer to the vaguely WindClan smell, he noticed something else underlying it. He couldn't exactly pinpoint it, but it was certainly feline. A rogue, perhaps? With that thought in mind, Firepaw made his way to the nearest tree and ascended it swiftly. Whoever it was, he'd see them long before they even knew he was here.

That is, if they were on the ground, of course.

the dawn [c] Empty
PostSubject: Re: the dawn [c]   the dawn [c] EmptySat 10 Aug 2024 - 17:17

Eventually, the combination of early morning heat and the strain of the last few days took its toll, and Sunfire's eyes drifted shut. The yellow tom surrendered to sleep, curled against the base of the tree. His sleep was dreamless and restful, and when he woke, it was clear that several hours had passed. He blinked the sleep out of his eyes, yawning sharply, and rose to his paws. If it had been this long, and no patrol had wandered past, he would simply take himself to them, and if anyone had a problem with it, he'd deal with it at the door.

In one fluid motion, the warrior slipped down to the ground, shaking shredded bark from his coat and lifting his nose to scent the air. SkyClan. The stub of his tail twitched, and he oriented himself towards camp. How many times had he walked this path as a warrior of SkyClan? Sunfire's claws sank into the dirt as he picked up his pace, loping along the trail. Every pawstep brought him closer to home, to his mother, and his siblings, and his children. He wasn't foolish enough to think that Mintglade would be happy to see him - he'd abandoned her, with the rest of the clan... but maybe, just maybe, she could forgive him.

He was making no effort to be stealthy, and still half-hoped that he'd find a patrol before he actually rolled up on the camp, so as he passed a particularly fresh SkyClan scent trail, Sunfire paused. His eyes angled upwards, into the trees, but there were so many places one could hide, it was impossible to see. He squinted, the hair on the back of his neck rising. If there was someone nearby, either they were far enough away now not to notice, or they were watching him.

He would wait and see.

Firepaw
Rank: Apprentice

Suddenly, an achingly familiar pelt drew the attention of Firepaw's yellow eyes, and he dug his claws into the hard bark beneath him, tail shuddering with a mixture of anticipation and shock. The golden fur, the scars that marred the crown of the tom's head, the short stub where a tail should've been...it couldn't be...could it? The apprentice swayed for a moment with the wind, his legs trembling. Sunfire. It was really him. He stared for several long moments as the warrior padded beneath his tree on his own, acting as though nothing had happened. Acting as though everyone hadn't thought he'd died. Acting as though even more hadn't died while looking for him. What had happened? why was he back now? Now that almost everyone else had gone.

Firepaw hesitated for a moment as his father stopped, his hackles rising as though he could tell he was being watched. Golden eyes, much like his own, lifted towards the canopy and scanned the boughs suspiciously. They passed over him, though, his dark pelt concealed amongst the dark leaves and even darker bark. For a moment, the tortoiseshell tom debated staying right where he was and seeing what his dad was up to, but he eventually decided against it. This was what he'd wanted, right? For Sunfire to come back safe? Hah. Right. It must have been something terrible that kept him away for so long...he was so strong, fighting his way back home.

Once the warrior's attention slid further away, Firepaw gathered his paws beneath his body and leapt to the ground, his paws hardly rustling the leaf litter as he landed. "Dad." He meowed; voice soft. It was so surreal to see him after all this time...he wasn't even sure what to say. "You died." He muttered eventually, voice devoid of emotion. "You died, and everyone else went with you." Almost everyone. "Honeydew, Graywind, Mintglade, Harrierpaw, Ploverwing...Blazepaw. It's just me, Sorrelmist and Lilypaw now." Now, the tears began to come. Moons of frustration, anger, and grief breaking through all at once.

"Where did you go!? Why did it take so long to come back!?" Betrayal glittered in Firepaw's eyes as his voice rose, his tail lashing. He thought he'd be happy to see Sunfire and, well, he was! He was also just...confused. "We missed you so much! I looked for you everyday! I looked for everyone a-and..." He sniffled loudly. "Are you really here? Is it actually you this time?" So many times he'd dreamed of this very moment. It might actually break him if he woke up in his nest again, this entire ordeal nothing but another cruel dream.

the dawn [c] Empty
PostSubject: Re: the dawn [c]   the dawn [c] EmptyTue 27 Aug 2024 - 13:46

His patience paid off shortly after his paws drew to a stop, and a mottled shape dropped from the tree he'd just passed. Sunfire half-turned, gaze sliding over to land on the approaching tom. But his aloof mask faltered when he realized that it wasn't just any warrior that had found him.

It was Firepaw.

Sunfire blinked, a smile forcing its way on to his features as he stepped forward, lowering his head to greet his son. How fortunate could he be that another of his children was the first of SkyClan that he met tonight. Perhaps his return would be welcomed, rather than met with mistrust, should he return with Firepaw at his side. "Son," he said warmly. A second of silence passed, but before Sunfire could continue, Firepaw did. Like Hemlockfox, the news thrust upon him from his younger son was not what he wanted to hear, but unlike the medicine cat, Firepaw had no tact, no hesitation to soften the blow.

The words that spilled out of his mouth made the yellow tom's breath catch in his chest. Not one. Not two. Not five.

How?

His paws were frozen to the ground. Numbness spread up his legs. It took everything he had to keep his face neutral, but he managed, somehow, to blink away the tears that burned the back of his eyes. Graywind. Mintglade. His children.

"It's really me," he said quietly, swallowing the grief back. "I'm here." The other questions were so complicated, not something he wished to get into right now, not sure he could get into it with what he'd just learned weighing on him like a fallen tree. But... if anyone deserved answers it was the family he'd abandoned. Sunfire let out a breath through his nostrils, tipping his head back towards the direction of the camp. "Come. Walk with me while we talk."

He fell in stride with Firepaw, quietly observing how large the tom had grown in his absence. He would be a warrior any day now, that was certain - if he wasn't already. He'd lost count of the moons he'd spent longing for the cover of these trees. "I didn't die, son. I... I had to leave, to protect SkyClan. Or I thought it would." He shook his head, eyes closing briefly. Obviously, that hadn't worked. If he'd stayed, could he have prevented it?

The warrior wanted to know why. How. Who. Every fiber of his being itched to tear his imagined enemy limb from limb, to shed blood from whatever it was that had caused this destruction to fall upon his family. But Firepaw shouldn't be the one to have to tell him that. He would get his answers from Wolfstar.

"I missed you, too. Truly, I did, and I am sorry for allowing you to believe I was dead. And I am sorry for not being here when you needed me. But I am here now, and I will never leave you again. I promise."

Firepaw
Rank: Apprentice

Firepaw stared defiantly up at his father, eyes stinging as he forced back the tears, grief, and guilt that threatened to eat him up from the inside out. A frown curved his mouth downward and his ears pinned back against his skull nervously. He was worried that Sunfire would disappear - vanish as though nothing more than an apparition - and leave him alone once more. It was just him and Lilykit now and she was so sick that it seemed as though she might not make it through the next day. Of course, that's how it seemed everyday and yet she always managed to pull through.

Regardless, he froze, feeling as though any further movement would send his father away again - somewhere he couldn't reach. Though, as Sunfire padded forward to stand beside him, Firepaw's body kicked into action, and he stumbled in his haste to join the golden warrior in his journey towards the camp. If this really was a dream, it would have ended by now...right? The tortoiseshell apprentice blinked back tears at the thought. He hoped it was real. Still, Firepaw was silent as they walked, not exactly happy to let his father do all the talking, but all too scared to speak himself.

He was nervous that anything that came out of his mouth would be cruel and unwarranted. It was bad enough at Sunfire's mate, friends, and children were gone, right? At least...most of them. The ones who deserved to survive. Taking a deep breath, Firepaw shoved his emotions deep down inside. Resentment, anger, betrayal...it would do nothing for him now. Nothing for either of them. Breathing heavily, Firepaw glanced over at his father, yellow eyes shimmering. "It's not your fault." He meowed eventually, voice trembling. "You had to go, right? It was up to me to keep everyone safe, and I failed. That's not on you." All of their deaths were on him.

He was Sunfire's son, the descendant of Wolfstar and all those leaders' whose blood ran through his veins. He should've been stronger. Then, with a sniffle, Firepaw stopped walking. Blazepaw had died right in front of him. Turning his gaze back up to Sunfire, the young tom's legs shook. "Has anyone you ever cared about died in front of you? Did you watch it happen and know that if only you'd moved faster, been stronger, that you could've saved them?" They were almost at the camp now, but he had to know if Sunfire at least understood a little bit of what he felt.
