Subject: sunny holiday [open] Sat 27 Jul 2024 - 14:28
i've given up on counting blessings
In a rare moment of genuine rest, ShadowClan's leader sprawled out in a sunbeam. Few ShadowClan cats braved the sunlit day, even fewer in the endless sweltering heat of greenleaf. With the lack of cover their territory afforded them, it was best to wait for the starlit night, with cool and refreshing breezes. The day guards were awake, of course; and a few warriors, apprentices, and particularly adventurous kits were around.
But Leopardstar had always worked night and day, and her periods of rest likewise varied. Her fur was long enough that the sun felt like she was burning under its gaze if she lingered too long, but that was reassuring in its own strange way.
Quiet moments like this, when her Clan was mostly sleeping, were something to cherish. Fleeting moments of peace.
Of course, no solitude could last forever.

Sunflare had found himself on day guard duty. This was a somewhat common occurrence for the smooth-coated warrior, as he didn’t have enough fluff for the sun to reduce him to a puddle of sweat. While most of ShadowClan slept, Sunflare took careful note of each cat entering or leaving camp. If something happened, it was important that everyone be accounted for. The warmth of the Greenleaf air, though, tempted him to nod off. He shook his head. What kind of senior warrior falls asleep at his post?
He didn’t disturb Leopardstar. His work was important, and he knew his company was not her preference. Still, he offered a nod of acknowledgment.

Badgermask was curled up in the cool shadows, her eyes narrowed as she stared at the illuminated parts of the camp as if it had personally offended her. As of late, it was nearly impossible to guess when the warrior would be awake or not - ever since the disappearance of Heatherberry, sleep had been something the warrior seemed to strive to do without... Or at least when she did sleep, it was out of view of most of her Clanmates.
She didn't care for warming her fur, she preferred the cooler nights and didn't seem thrilled to be awake. But as her eyes drifted up to glance at her mom, her expression softened ever so slightly. Badgermask hadn't made many attempts to get to know her younger siblings - it hurt to look at them, to think of her lost littermates... And she felt even more conflicted now that the final sibling she was truly close with was...Gone. But her mother - Badgermask's feelings were still somewhat complex, but she did truly want to reach out and get to know her again. She just... She wasn't sure how.
What was there to say? Her ears slicked back, glancing over at Sunflare who was standing guard. Slowly the warrior stood to her paws and prowled into the sunlight, wincing as a stray beam caught her in the eye but nonetheless she made her way to Leopardstar and quietly settled down a tail-length away from her - saying nothing as she plopped her head onto her paws and closed her eyes to enjoy the silence and peace while it lasted.
Leopardstar stretched out a bit more when her daughter joined her, for once missing the days when her first kits were born at Highstones; all of them surrounded by the warmth of family, despite the chill. Even then she had known those moments were fleeting, but she hadn't known just how much she would lose.
She did what she could to repair the damage she had done, and she would continue to do so for as long as she lived.
"This isn't bad weather," she mused aloud, voice soft as she pushed the bitter memories away. "Better than trying to sleep in the snow, at least."
