Rookflight did not enjoy green-leaf. This year seemed especially hot compared to the last, with the sun determined to burn the chill even out of the shade. It burned into their dark pelt and made them feel sluggish and snappish. Especially now, when the sun was at its height and the day was warmest, they wished to be hidden in the warrior’s den where it was moderately cooler. But… there was one thing to boost Rookflight’s mood. Though they were not very familiar with Dovetail, beyond knowing he’d sired RiverClan’s latest litter, they always enjoyed their time spent with Willowwisp. For her sake, Rookflight kept their head up.
The walk was largely quiet, and the border appeared quiet as well on approach. Rookflight let out a quiet breath of relief. Hopefully no strange ThunderClanners would appear and try to incite conflict. Rookflight approached the water that separated the bank from the Sunningrocks and slid in with ease. Rather than climbing straight to the other side, he lingered in the current. The water was significantly colder than the air temperature, and it felt good just to buoy in it for a moment while his patrolmates caught up.

A constant uphill run...
The water was a nice temperature and a nice change to the heat of greenleaf that seeped throughout the territory. Willowwisp enjoyed floating along in the gentle current, allowing the fat in her body from a plentiful season to keep her afloat alongside Rookflight and Dovetail. She had been eager to get into the water after Rookflight, and the cold relief was nice.
“These greenleaf days feel different from being a kit, doesn’t it?” she asked, not to either one in particular. She had a distant memory of being taken to shallow pools in the greenleaf months with her siblings to learn how to swim for the first time. That was a nice memory.
Dovetail had never minded going on border patrols, though he preferred the purpose of fishing or hunting to the usual monotony of simply walking in a direction. Monotony would almost be a change of pace for him now, though--a brief reprieve from finding himself constantly surrounded by the piercing, demanding voices of kits. His kits. He loved them, and of course he wanted to be with them whenever he could, but at the times that he was forced to spend away and patrol, he found himself enjoying the silence more than he once had. Of course, he still felt the pounding anxiety that never left him when his family was out of his sight--the ridiculous worries of what could befall them when he was not around to protect him--but there was little to be done about that.
It was nice, to be here at Sunningrocks. Dovetail wasted no time before joining his two patrolmates in the cool, comforting embrace of the water. Moons of swimming made his movements easy and thoughtless, his large paws brushing against the smooth stones at the bottom, his thick fur hardly weighing him down at all. Distantly he registered the voice of Willowwisp saying something. He was never quite sure what to make of the former leader's daughter. She'd always been polite to him, though it was always difficult to tell what she was thinking, with the calm voice and straight face she'd inherited from her mother. And her companion, Rookflight, he knew even less. They were Larkspring's sibling; that was where his knowledge of them began and ended. He seemed far quieter than his brother, at least, and Dovetail had never heard anyone speak ill of them, but there was very little information to go off of. Belatedly he heard the words that had been spoken. Kithood... it felt odd to remember. Days when he'd been so small, and so certain of his place in the world. His siblings had been his world. "Yes," he said simply, pale blue eyes meeting Willowwisp's inscrutable gaze. "More freedom, and yet more responsibility. It's different... but not good or bad. Just different."
