The moon had risen above the trees by the time the patrol left camp. A pawful of warriors, Briarpaw, and Smokeypaw tasked with hunting. She hadn't seen much of her brother lately, wrapped up in her own training, so Briarpaw was happy to get the chance to finally be on patrol with one of her siblings. Cardinalpaw had gone missing, so now it was just the two of them in the apprentice's den. Briarpaw hadn't even gotten a chance to say goodbye, wherever her sister had gotten off to, she hoped that Cardinalpaw was safe. Ideally, she would have been on this patrol too. But she wasn't.
And she wasn't about to let another of her siblings slip through her paws.
"I didn't think I'd be so wrapped up in training... How have you been, Smokeypaw?" Green eyes glanced at her brother, a hint of worry in their depths.

It'd been ages since Smokeypaw had spent time with any of his family members, and it was slowly killing him. Since Leopardstar didn't always have the time for them, to no fault of her own, all the siblings had was each other. Especially without a father to speak of. But with Cardinalpaw... temporarily gone, and Webkit seemingly stuck in the nursery forever, it was just him and Briarpaw. Briarpaw, whose free time only ever coincided with his training.
Crickets filled the still night air, and though the sun had long since set, a heavy blanket of warmth still hung in the air. Smokeypaw hadn't been on a hunting patrol before, and as such, hadn't even been outside of camp after dusk save for once or twice. It was beautiful. Spring peepers croaked in the deep of the marsh, and pale moon light glowing through the trees lit the patrol's path. Smokeypaw hung back, both to appreciate the scene and to have a chance to speak with his sister.
He smiled as she broke the silence, but there was a sadness in it that he hadn't been able to hide. "Me neither. You and I always seem to be coming and going at different times." Smokeypaw observed, his voice hushed and melancholy. But no. There was no reason to be sad. "I'm well, though. Hey, I saved Sunflare from a fox a bit ago! I didn't even get the chance to tell you!" The long-furred tom perked up suddenly, as though cheered up by his recent accomplishment. He tapped his left shoulder with the tip of his tail. There was a small scar there - not big enough to be very noticeable, but a mark of his battle nonetheless. "All I've got is this to show for it! The mange pelt barely touched me."
Though he tried his best, Cardinalpaw's disappearance seemed to hang in the air between them. Smokeypaw didn't think he could address it. Not now. It still plagued him late at night, when he was alone in his nest. All he could do was not think about it. He let himself believe that Cardinalpaw had set out on some grand adventure, and that she'd be home any day now. The worry in Briarpaw's gaze told him that she might want to talk about it. He racked his brain for a distraction. "Say... wanna have a hunting competition? Whoever catches the juiciest piece of prey wins?" As Smokeypaw proposed this, he heard a sudden rustling in the bushes ahead. "I can go first."<font color="#000"> He whispered, trying to ignore the feelings that rose in his throat. Then he padded toward the thick undergrowth silently. The air was heavy with the scent of mouse, and if he could bring it down in front of Briarpaw, he was sure he'd earn his sister's praise. As he neared, his eyes narrowed, pupils swallowed by the icy blue of his eyes. There. The mouse didn't even know he was here. He readied himself to pounce -
And landed perfectly on the mouse, giving it a swift bite to its neck.
Smokeypaw turned back to his sister and tried to ignore the worry in her gaze. Would she let it go and humor him? He hoped so. "I might have you beat already." He purred from behind his catch, then fell into step beside Briarpaw once again.
Smokeypaw successfully caught a mouse! (-2 EP)

"Maybe if we asked our mentors we could at least train together for a bit? Larkshine seems to like joint training sessions..." Meanwhile she had no idea about her brother's mentor. Sunflare, if she remembered right... And it seemed she did, as her brother recounted some of his recent exploits.
"A fox? No way!" Briarpaw's hushed tone was one of mingled awe and excitement, "What happened? It must've been huge!" The raccoons she had fought with Larkshine didn't seem nearly as threatening as the stories she'd heard about foxes. What if the reason Cardinalpaw was missing was some beast lurking on the territory? Stars, she did not want to think about that.
Smokeypaw's gaze met hers, and the sudden ask about a hunting competition had Briarpaw attempting a weak smile. "Alright." She mewed. Anything to get her mind off of wherever Cardinalpaw might have been.
"Good catch! Looks like you're a natural at it, Smokeypaw." Briarpaw purred. Turning, green eyes scanned the marsh as she searched for her own piece of prey. Smokeypaw had given her a disatraction... For the moment.
Sensitive ears caught the small pitter-patter of mouse paws, and Briarpaw carefully dropped into a crouch and stalked forward. She never got the chance to leap, the rush of air around her head and a screech too quick for the apprentice to react sent the prey animal scurrying, and sharp talons raked her back. With a yowl, Briarpaw twisted, clawing at the feathered foxheart.
"Smokeypaw!" She called, "Help!"
Briarpaw is attempting to catch a mouse for -2 ep. She summoned a wild Owl instead! 38 / 40 ep
Owl used Swoop for -15 ep, dealing -9 damage to Briarpaw. Briarpaw used Claw for -5 ep, dealing -5 damage.

Smokeypaw puffed his chest out at his sister's reaction. It was exactly the reaction he'd wanted, the amazement palpable in her voice.He chuckled. "It snuck up on us while we were hunting! I mean, I didn't... beat it, exactly, but I managed to wound it enough that Sunflare and I could flee." He admitted, his tone a bit embarrassed. He felt like a coward for running. A real warrior would've killed the mange pelt - but he hadn't known any better. Sunflare had been in danger. Still, his ears perked up again at the suggestion of a joint training session. Smokeypaw had never met Larkshine, but she must have been good if she'd been assigned to his sister. "We totally should! I'll have to ask Sunflare, but I would love that. We could spar!"
Briarpaw's weak smile made his chest tighten with grief. Not because Cardinalpaw was dead. She couldn't be. But because he missed her. She should be here, hunting with them...
And it was perhaps a good thing she was not, because as Briarpaw trailed off in search of her own kill, he heard the unfamiliar, terrifying beating of wings overhead. Fear paralyzed him for a moment. What was that? It was certainly no crow or magpie. His ears pinned back staunchly against his head. For a moment, Smokeypaw was too scared to search the sky for the source of the noise, as though not looking would make the beast would go away. Then, the thunderous beating of wings grew louder, and his sister's voice made every hair on his pelt stand on end.
"Help!" Smokeypaw sprung into action. His eyes sharpened as they locked on the predator - an owl, was it? They'd picked on ShadowClan cats before. He wouldn't let it hurt Briarpaw. "Back off, worm-eater!" Smokeypaw yowled as he gathered his haunches beneath himself. He leapt with paws outstretched and managed to dig his claws into one of its wings. Gritting his teeth, he managed to drag it back toward the ground somewhat. It could hardly struggle against his grip in its surprise. Had it thought Briarpaw was alone, and it could just pick her off like some piece of fresh-kill? Well, it'd made a fatal mistake. This time, he'd make sure to bring the sorry thing back to camp - and perhaps he'd keep its feathers as a trophy.
Smokeypaw used Claw (Surprise Attack in effect), costing -5 EP (+10) and dealing -6 HP (+3).
"I mean, it's still a win if you two got away from it without too much harm, right?" She preferred to look at the positives. "Larkshine's really nice, I bet she'd be happy to!" She added. If only Cardinalpaw and Webkit could join them.
"Why's it always sparring? We could go hunting instead, or a border patrol." Though sparring was at least better than real fighting. That made it tolerable. Still, Briarpaw couldn't help but complain just a little.
It was a relief to know that Smokeypaw had come to her side so quickly, and the owl let out a screech at claws tore into feathers and flesh. Briarpaw swallowed back her fear, sinking fangs into the owl and hating the taste of blood on her tongue. It was threatening her and Smokeypaw though, and to avoid her brother being injured she would do what needed to be done.

Why's it always sparring? Smokeypaw paused. Didn't Briarpaw like sparring? Defending your Clan was one of the most important parts of being a warrior. As much as hunting was necessary, it was satisfying to know he would be able to protect his loved ones when the time came. A warrior who did not sharpen his claws wasn't much use to their Clan.
As much as he wanted to frown, he kept his easy grin.You're out with Briarpaw, and you're having a good time. Hush."If you'd prefer! I haven't hunted much, I don't mind a little practice." Still, her words worried him. Was she hesitant? He didn't know what he could do about that. What is Larkshine teaching her?
Between him and his sister, though, it seemed the owl didn't stand a chance. His pulse quickened with the thrill of battle as the duo clawed and snapped at it. Blood stained its feathers, and Smokeypaw's eyes narrowed further. It was having trouble staying in the air, which gave them the perfect opportunity to bite at it and bring it down. It screeched again as he bit at its foot, avoiding its sharp talons and pulling it back down to the ground. The metallic taste of blood bathed his tongue as he brought the owl to the mud below. "Finish it, Briar!" He wasn't going to let another predator escape on his watch.
Smokeypaw used Bite, costing -5 EP and dealing -6 HP!
The bird shrieked in both displeasure and pain as claws raked across it. It was having trouble staying in the air, the beating of once powerful wings becoming weaker and more erratic. Seizing the opportunity, Briarpaw slashed at the bird's body.
"Foxdung." She grumbled, "Just once, I'd like a normal outing!" The wounds stung, but she'd be fine probably. At least it hadn't been another raccoon this time.
"Are you okay? Didn't get you too, did it?" She asked, glancing up at Smokeypaw.

Smokeypaw stood, panting, as the owl's cries died in its throat. He looked over at his sister. She was bleeding where its talons had raked her. It made his chest burn with the same kind of anger he'd felt when the fox had gone after Sunflare - but more intense. A protective kind of rage. He rushed over to her, sniffing at her wounds and giving them a few gentle, reassuring licks as though he could soothe them without herbs. "No, I'm okay - don't worry about me. Are you alright? It doesn't hurt too much, does it?" His sky blue gaze met hers anxiously. Now that the owl was dead, the bloodlust had left him, and he was just concerned about his sister.
"One day, I promise. Maybe we can get rid of all the stupid owls and foxes and raccoons and just walk sometime." He hissed, claws scoring the ground as though he could eradicate all the predators from the forest single-pawed. Then he frowned. "Hey, maybe we should get you to a medicine cat. I don't want those to get infected." He was not the kind of cat that took chances.
"I'll be fine, promise! It doesn't hurt that badly." Briarpaw weakly protested her brother's fussing, though she didn't pull away from him either.
At Smokeypaw's hiss she lightly pressed against him, heedless of the blood staining her fur, "I dream of it, it feels like every patrol I'm on runs into something." Some of her clanmates might have thought a world without such predators would be boring, but Briarpaw wouldn't have minded it at all.
...Right. She was, in fact, still bleeding. The idea of going to the medicine den wasn't one she often entertained, but maybe it would be a good idea to get those wounds looked at. "Oh okay, fine." She mewed, "...Come on, before something else decides to jump us."
