PIGEONPOUNCE
Life gives you lemons...
It was a clear, sunny day as Pigeonpounce led her brother and Willowwisp through the territory. It felt strange, to be leading them--they were both warriors quite a while before she was, and it was particularly strange to be in a position to boss Dovetail around. It was a little funny, though; at least, it was when she could stop thinking long enough to let it be. Her eyes frequently flicked toward her brother, searching for… something in his eyes. Approval, perhaps, or just acceptance. Pigeonpounce shook herself out and turned her eyes forward for the umpteenth time. They’d gone far enough out into the wetlands now. She figured she might as well stop staring at Dovetail and actually begin.
...But how did she begin? She barely knew the names of half the herbs, and really only knew what the colorful ones looked like. How was she supposed to know what she was looking for? How was she supposed to give Willowwisp and Dovetail any sort of instruction when she barely knew what she was doing? Pigeonpounce screwed her eyes shut for a moment, took a breath, and turned around to face both the cats following her. She just had to do it, even if she had to do it scared.
”Le’s spread out,” she said with as much confidence as she could muster. ”Lotta herbs have real colorful leaves, or kinda funny-shaped leaves, so try lookin’ for anythin’ like that. Or, um, easy things like, y’know, cobwebs.” Her tail waved to dismiss them both. ”Lemme know if ya find anything? An’, uh, don’t eat whatever ya find. It might be pois’nous, and I--” wouldn’t know what to do? ”I… don’t want that happenin’ to either of ya.” Pigeonpounce tried a smile before turning around again and beginning to set off on her own. ”G’luck!”
As she wandered away from the group, picking her way between shallow, scattered pools, Pigeonpounce's eyes quickly drifted to a spot of color set against the ground. A cluster of small, yellow flowerheads, nodding gently in the breeze. She didn't recognize it by name, but it certainly looked useful... and she was sure Wrensong could tell her what it was if she brought it back to camp. Hopefully it wasn't just some useless plant. Trotting over, she bent down and nipped the plant off at the stem, severing it from its roots, and waved her tail proudly.
Pigeonpounce attempted to find something... found coltsfoot!

WILLOWWISP
A constant uphill run...
Willowwisp didn’t know her fellow patrolmates that well, but she knew that they were respectable members of the clan. She had spoken with Dovetail only a couple of times and Pigeonpounce less than that. Dovetail seemed to be serious and strong, though, and Pigeonpounce, as little as Willowwisp knew her, was the new medicine cat, so she had to be quite capable too. Though the way that she talked about herbs left…some things to be desired. Willowwisp wondered if she was just trying to explain things in dumbed-down terms for them because they didn’t know much of anything, but she had a feeling that Pigeonpounce just had not learned too much yet. She was quite new after all.
She nodded to the medicine cat and then chose another direction to wander in search of new herbs. It didn’t take too long to come across a patch of poppy flowers. Her stomach tightened as she saw some of the seeds available for the taking. Memories of her mother flashed into her mind, of the pain she had been in at the end…Willowwisp shook her head and put her focus to the task. She fetched a leaf and carefully brushed the seeds into the leaf to carry like a bowl. She lifted it carefully in her mouth so she wouldn’t accidentally crack any seeds with her teeth. She headed back to Pigeonpounce and Dovetail with her herb in tow.

Dovetail hadn't quite gathered his thoughts yet about Pigeonpounce's new position. He'd never even considered the thought of any of his siblings becoming medicine cat, let alone his youngest and most annoying sister. Light blue eyes kept following her movements as they walked out into the forest together, trying to gauge how she felt about this advancement. That was the thing. His feelings about it weren't important. How did she feel? Was this something she actually wanted? It had come on so suddenly. She'd seemed content in the position of warrior, hanging out with her awful friend Scarletflare and swimming and fishing with the rest of them. Why the sudden change? Surely it wasn't just because the stars had told her to. Had she dreamed about it? Had she.... Thinking about dreams sent a shudder down Dovetail's spine. He didn't want to think about the alternative to StarClan telling her to take the job. So instead, he tried to see if her normally bubbly personality was attempting to hide any unease beneath it.
He'd never been on many herb-gathering patrols. With his sister as medicine cat now, of course, that would probably change. Hopefully Willowwisp knew what she was doing--her sister had been medicine cat apprentice once, hadn't she? Dovetail glanced over at the leader's daughter. They'd had a few conversations, but he couldn't say that he considered them very close. He did feel more comfortable around her than many other Clanmates, though, so he was glad of her presence. There were far worse companions to have on a patrol like this.
Dovetail knew his sister fairly well. He could sense the tremble at the end of her voice, the unease masked by her usual attempts at confidence. Even if this had been something she wanted, it appeared to be something he was struggling with. His paws felt heavy when he walked. How could he help? He didn't know much about herbs, either... there wasn't any guidance he could hope to offer. For now, he supposed it would be better not to call her on the act in front of another cat. She might not want her worries to be exposed. In the meantime, he listened patiently to her halting explanation, and set off with sharp eyes scanning the undergrowth for any plants he could recognize.
No leaves or flowers stood out to him. He'd rarely ever been injured, and thankfully neither had his siblings, meaning he'd never had much excuse to spend time in the medicine den. Any blossoms or plants could just as easily be harmful as helpful. The stocky warrior almost let out a sigh of relief when he saw a small patch of cobwebs. That, at least, he could recognize. Sticky webs like that couldn't be mistaken for anything else. With a murmured apology to whichever spider he was taking them from, he reached out a large paw to gather a swath, and then returned to Pigeonpounce to wordlessly offer them to her.
