Hemlockfox shoved his way through the tall grasses that surrounded his den and into the camp's main clearing, a determined look on his face. He was tired of tending to every scrape and bruise these foolish WindClanners brought to his den - it was about time they learn to take care of themselves. At least so he didn't have to waste time on such ridiculous things. Small bundle of herbs hanging from his jaws, he settled down just outside of his den and spread out each leaf with a careful paw. Yarrow, poppy seeds, and marigold. Not too much, but enough.
He didn't want to overwhelm anyone - that would defeat the purpose - but if they knew these few herbs, it'd make his job a whole lot easier. Besides, if anything happened to him, WindClan wouldn't be totally helpless. With a sweep of his tail, Hemlockfox encircled the herbs to protect them from wayward paws and scanned the camp for any idle cats. Loudly, he called out. "You lot! Get off of your tails! If you all have nothing better to do, I'm going to teach you about some herbs." Then, in a quieter voice, muttered, "Lazy. No wonder they're all so thin."

OATFLUFFare you going to age with grace? he/him - t3 windclan warrior
A sadness had seemed to fall over the camp after Sootstorm's funeral. When Oatfluff had left camp that morning, not many cats had yet risen, and he didn't bother trying to gather enough cats for a patrol before he left on his own. And now, upon his return, his heart sank to find that camp didn't look much different. He was sure the cats looked lazy to any outsider, but truly, the silence came from the heavy grief that had fallen across each cat's shoulders. Oatfluff woke some days feeling absolutely miserable, not wanting to so much as speak, but some days... Some days, he was just determined to be okay again. Life had to go on, after all. And today was one of those days.
The sun was at its peak in the sky when he returned from his hunt, and as he placed his hare on the fresh-kill pile, he noticed something unusual. Hemlockfox, sitting in the midst of the clearing, calling out the moor dwellers. His brown eyes narrowed and his ears pricked as he walked toward the burly tom. The rich scent of herbs pricked his nose as he neared. "Hey, Hemlock! You're gonna teach us some herbs 'n stuff?" The dappled tom peered over the medicine cat's bushy tail curiously, his chestnut brown gaze shining in the bright sun. "What are these ones called?" Oatfluff reached a paw over Hemlockfox's tail to bat at one of the brilliantly yellow flowers, then thought better of it and sat down, tail tapping the ground eagerly.

The sheer ice in her gaze would normally be enough to send other cats packing. Auburnrain glowered so intensely at the Skyclan cat that one would believe looks really could kill. Still, at the mention of learning about herbs, the mute she-cat slowly got to her paws and approached. Her claws remained out however, because the last thing she wanted was for Hemlockfox to feel too comfortable. It wasn't so much that she cared about Windclan or thought it to be superior so much that Hemlockfox was new and hadn't learned to fear her yet. That would change in time.
She eyed the plants around the medicine cat, her tail lashing in fury. She'd learn the plants... and then Hemlockfox would learn her claws. To the darkest parts of the Dark Forest with consequences. She would keep her mouth closed for a time, but once she was bored, she was going to entertain herself.

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.
While others had slowed down after the funeral, Marigoldpaw could barely sit still in camp long enough to eat. As he finished off the rabbit he remembered catching yesterday and prepared to sign up for another patrol or find Fuzzface to "train" with, some tom called out to the entire camp. That tom turned out to be the medicine cat Hemlockfox, and his mention of herbs firmly held Marigoldpaw's attention. He joined the gathering cats who were only a pair at the moment. A she-cat named Auburnrain with a gaze as light and cold as icicles, and the warm-eyed tom Oatfluff curiously asking about the herbs. He craned his neck to see which herbs had piqued their interest.
"Marigold!" the tom gasped with glee. His pupils swallowed the vibrant orange iris of his eye, reflecting within the equally vibrant orange petals of the familiar flower. Reminded of his earliest days of youth Marigoldpaw smiled brightly as the weight of adulthood lifted off his shoulders. "I love these!" he purred before reaching to grasp a stalk.

"I feel like a pet store parrot, ever spouting words"
Spiderdance T1 Warrior | WindClan | He/Him
Spiderdance made sure to keep himself busy. Busy paws meant a busy mind, and a busy mind wouldn't focus on how the recent deaths and disappearances. He could pretend things were normal if they never settled in his mind. Because everything was normal, and would continue to be normal forever. However, even he needed breaks sometimes.
The lanky tom lifted his head from his paws when Hemlockfox called out to all those resting, Spiderdance tilting his head curiously. He hadn't spoken much to the other cat, at least not beyond his frequent visits for scratched pads. Maybe this could be a good chance not only to learn about herbs, but about his clanmate as well!
He trotted over, joining the small group gathering around Hemlockfox. He didn't recognize much of the plants there beyond Marigold, a plant it seemed the apprentice beside him knew as well with how they trilled their name with excitement. Fitting, considering he was named after them. Spiderdance, however, was more interested in the seeds. It was a wonder how something so tiny could help heal a cat. "What about these? What are these for?" He pointed a claw towards them, bright blue eyes glancing toward the medicine cat.

Hemlockfox stared at the cats as they gathered, his blue eyes narrowed. Four of them in total had simply been lounging about the camp without a care in the world. In SkyClan, it wasn't an uncommon occurrence to have cats resting after their patrols, but WindClan was smaller with more mouths to feed. If these cats were going to lie about, they might as well learn a thing or two. Especially those who had been sunning themselves all day. He frowned severely.
"Glad some of you found it in you to join me." He muttered eventually. One of the cats, Oatfluff, was familiar to him. However, he couldn't say the same of the others - just that he'd seen them around the camp now and then. He nodded to the cheerful tom, though, ready to snap at him as his paw hovered over the small collection of herbs. However, he seemed to think better of it and sat back. Another tom, however, Marigoldpaw if he remembered correctly, wasn't so smart. With a growl, he batted the apprentice's paw away. "Careful!" He snapped.
"These plants are to be handled delicately." He meowed sternly. The she-cat he only recognized from occasional glimpses from across the clearing. Spiderdance, however, was a frequent visitor to his den. They, at least, had the sense not to mess with his herbs. "First thing you all should know - you may look at and smell my herbs, but do not touch them without asking me. I don't want to go out and collect more if one of you tears or ruins them." He eyed the she-cat that sat silently to the side and just as quickly looked to Spiderdance as he pointed at each herb in turn. "I brought yarrow, poppy seeds, and marigold - as Marigoldpaw has already pointed out." How odd, to be named after an herb.
Briefly, he wondered if Marigoldpaw lived up to his name as Hemlockfox did to his. "Oatfluff - those yellow flowers are the marigolds your friend here is named after." He returned his attention to Spiderdance, who'd asked about the seeds, and pushed the small pile forward so the gathered cats could see them clearly. "These are poppy seeds. Good for many things, but mostly used to soothe pain and help with sleep." He set the other two herbs out, then, and gestured to them with his tail. "You all know marigold, but does anyone recognize the third plant I brought out?" Spiderdance, at least, should remember it.

OATFLUFFare you going to age with grace? he/him - t3 windclan warrior
"Hey, that's cool!" Oatfluff purred as Hemlockfox went through each herb. He nudged Marigoldpaw affectionately with his shoulder. "Those flowers are named after you!" He could see how Marigoldpaw had gotten his name, now that he was seeing the vibrant flowers for the first time. They were the same color as the tom's eyes - and it was definitely a pretty color, too.
The medicine cat seemed a little grumpy today, though that wasn't exactly news. Oatfluff wondered if he was still missing home. I would be. He didn't see how any cat could leave their home - not only their Clan, but their kin - and adjust to life in a new place. The brown tom wasn't sure he could ever do that. So he excused Hemlockfox's tone, laced with more than a hint of attitude, and sat at attention. If Hem ever needed it, Oatfluff wanted to be able to help. "Got it. Sorry, I didn't realize." The warrior's chestnut gaze wandered from Hemlockfox's blue, blue eyes down to the herbs by his large paws. "Can I sniff them? I mean - do you mind? That way, if I ever see them out on the territory, I can bring them back with me." He offered, a soft grin gracing his maw.
Oatfluff side-eyed the other two that had gathered, their small group forming a circle around the burly tom. He didn't recognize the molly. He did recognize Spiderdance, though they'd never really spoken. He vaguely remembered playing with him as a kit. StarClan, I'm getting old if he's already a warrior. Glancing back at Auburnrain, he found a startling look in her eyes. Icy and mean. If she stepped out of line and said anything to Hemlock, he decided he'd have to step in. Of course, Hemlockfox would probably resent him for it, asserting that he could handle himself or whatever. Speaking of...he'd totally gotten distracted from the lesson. Oops. He turned his attention back to the medic, who was gesturing to a few white and yellow flowers next to the marigold. Hmm. What were those? He really didn't know many herbs. "...Coltsfoot?" Coltsfoot was white and yellow, right? Where had he heard that? Maybe when Sootstorm had led that herb gathering patrol, back when Daisyfang first went missing.

Auburnrain blinked at each plant, showing little interest. She was listening, but only just. She didn't even so much as flinch when Marigoldpaw was scolded. She would have let the apprentice find out why just doing something without thinking was a bad idea. Too bad she didn't swallow a deathberry. That would have been entertaining. She finally reached out and touched Hemlockfox to get his attention.
"Which ones are poisonous?" She mouthed. She hated the fact that she lost her voice, though she didn't think anyone could have saved it anyway.

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.
Marigoldpaw winced, ears flicking back and paw recoiling. He looked at the medicine cat with one brow furrowed. I can be delicate, he wanted to retort. The apprentice swallowed his growl, huffing instead as he drew away and turned his head toward the other cat who had joined. Spiderdance was curiously eyeing the herbs with their bright blue gaze. Hemlockfox opened his mouth again, giving Marigoldpaw an idea. Maybe he could go out and find some herbs of his own, then he wouldn't have to worry about any stingy medicine cats. He grew excited as he imagined going out into the flower fields and trying out a bouquet of them. All the tastes and colors and smells. Glorious.
He smiled brightly as Oatfluff bumped his shoulder. "I know! They've been my absolute favorite ever since I was a kitten. You have to try eating one someday. It's seriously the best thing ever." The tom paid attention to the names Hemlockfox introduced, remembering each herb's looks in detail. Poppies were another great flower, beautifully and passionately red. He vaguely remembered eating their seeds once before, followed by a great and powerful nap. Someone had to come find him and bring him back to the nursery. Marigoldpaw softly chuckled at the memory.
He nodded eagerly as Oatfluff guessed Coltsfoot before looking to Hemlockfox for confirmation. "Or like chamomile or something?" he added before peering closer. "I've seen these growing in rocks up by Highstones. I don't know what they're called." Marigoldpaw leaned back, looking at Spiderdance and Auburnrain. His eyes widened. Did he see that right? Was she mouthing the word poisonous? Margioldpaw glanced over to Oatfluff with concern.

Spiderdance T1 Warrior | WindClan | He/Him
Spiderdance's brows furrowed a bit when Hemlockfox batted Marigold's paw away. He understood wanting to keep his herbs safe, but there were certainly nicer ways to warn them. Could he not use his words? He kept his mouth shut though, maybe the tom was just stressed.
He crouched down, tucking his paws underneath himself to get a better look at the plants as Hemlockfox pointed out each one, asking the small group to name the last herb. "Oh! I recognize this one. You use it on my paws sometimes. Also... I think you're not supposed to eat it?" He remembered that warning, but not why he was warned. He was pretty sure it gave you a stomach ache? He couldn't remember exactly. Nor could he remember the name...
Coltsfoot and chamomile didn't sound right... but he didn't have a better name to offer. "Um..." He kneaded the ground, wracking his brain for the answer. He knew it! Totally. He was just... taking a moment for it to come to him. Definitely.

Hemlockfox blinked at Oatfluff, wondering if perhaps there was a deeper meaning behind his name than his long, thick fur. Maybe, someone had noticed the fact that his head was filled with nothing but downy feathers and decided to be sly about it. He withheld a snicker at the thought, but it made sense. With a sigh, he nodded and decided not to berate the sunny tom too much. "I did say you were allowed to smell them." He grunted with only a smidge of impatience. Though, maybe he was so bad at paying attention to directions that everyone had to repeat everything they said a thousand times - as if his ears were filled with fluff. Either way worked, probably.
The, the she-cat, Auburnrain, muttered something so quietly that, for a moment, Hemlockfox was certain she hadn't said anything at all. He tipped his head to the side, fixed his attention on her, and frowned. What? Oh? She was the one that didn't talk, wasn't she? He'd only caught the tail-end of what she'd mouthed, but it was enough the get the gist. "Ah, none of these are poisonous." Could she not tell just by looking at them? "Maybe we can go over those another time." Maybe, but just the most common poisons so they could avoid them.
There was hardly a reason to memorize dangerous herbs outside of avoidance. As cats began to guess the last herb, though, his attention left Auburnrain and he waited patiently for each to try their paw at it. He'd not expected anyone to know, really, but it was a bit disappointing that Spiderdance didn't remember the name. At least he'd gotten the herb's purpose right. "Yarrow." He meowed eventually, once it was clear the thin tom wouldn't remember. "Good for sore pads but also useful if one were to accidentally consume something poisonous." He glanced at Auburnrain at that. Perhaps that's what she'd wanted to know.
