WrenpawRiverclan Camp

Wrenpaw understands a lot of things from an objective point of view. She understands that getting sick wasn’t her fault, she understands she couldn’t help her body’s reactions, she understands that there’s nothing wrong with needing help. She would never hold one of her clanmates to the impossible standard she wants to hold herself to. Still. That didn’t stop the helpless frustration and guilt that clawed at her and weighed her down as surely as the consistent tightness in her lungs did.

The moons of being able to do very little to give back to her clan, of feeling utterly useless to the people that she loved were bad enough. The grief of losing Sandyshell tore at her heart, chasing her and digging into her when she least expected its presence to make itself known. Perhaps amongst the hardest things of all were the fact that she was unable to do the thing she prided herself on the most; being unable to provide for and care for her family. She’d seen the weight on her mother’s shoulder’s, seen the wounds, both internal and external, that the war had caused on her clan, and had been able to do very little to help.

She still wasn’t able to do anything, really.

Wrenpaw hated that. She wanted to make things better. She wanted her mom to feel better and, in the same breath, she wanted to seek comfort in the familiar safety of her mother’s fur and beg for guidance and answers she was aware her mother couldn’t provide. She couldn’t make any of it truly better and it drove her crazy. There was no herbal remedy or well-said advice potent enough to make any of this alright.

So Wrenpaw did what she could. And today, what she could do was pick up a fish big enough to share and approach Perchstar in a moment where she seemed, relatively at least, free enough to share a meal. “Mama,” She said as she approached to get Perchstar’s attention. She offered her mother a smile, more a squinting of her eyes with her mouth full, and she set down the fish when she said, “Are you free? Can we eat together?”

Some days the emotions inside of Perchstar ran rampant no matter what she did, completely out of her control to wrangle, and it was the best she could do to pretend they didn't exist. Some days they were deceptively quiet and only emerged when she least expected it. Some other days, they were just... tired. As tired as she was. Those numb, silent days were the easiest. Those days, she could simply move through her duties like a competent shadow, allowing the neutral mask to completely become her and subsume any sorrow or loathing that waited in the wings. Today was one of those days--or at least, it had been up until now. The leader allowed herself a brief moment of respite from her duties, sitting in camp and soaking up the few rays of newleaf sun that emerged golden from the sky, though it wasn't with as much bone-tired exhaustion as usual. Just... tired. A normal, dull kind of tired. She didn't feel content or happy. She felt nothing, and days like this were far easier than the rest. Unfortunately rare, but she welcomed them when they came. For just a moment, she closed her eyes, allowing herself to slip away in the brief lack of cares.

But it only took a moment for an interruption to surface... with a voice she couldn't recall hearing speak clearly in quite a while.

“Mama, are you free? Can we eat together?”

Perchstar turned at the unexpected voice, her eyes widened at the she-cat before her. A face that she would never forget; one that lingered in her thoughts even on days as numb as this. Her daughter Wrenpaw. How long had it been since they'd spoken? She'd checked up on her periodically, whenever she could, but the sick she-cat had often spoken in a cough-thick tone, if at all. More often than not she had simply been in a restless sleep of recovery. But for Wrenpaw to feel well enough to be up and about, even well enough to speak with eyes so unclouded by illness.... The numbness fell away. It had been nice while it lasted, but not even the strongest apathy could best the flood of sudden, uncontested love that burst through Perchstar's fragile heart. "Yes, of course. I always have time for you." Though as ever her face remained unsmiling, the characteristic gentleness with which she spoke to her daughters softened the lines around her eyes slightly. She hadn't eaten yet--now was as good a time as any. She just had to ignore how allowing herself to feel love suddenly reopened the many wounds on her heart. Once it had been forced to beat, she suddenly had to feel the pain again. Just ignore it; that was what she always had to do. "I am glad that you are feeling better again. I have been worried about you."

WrenpawRiverclan Camp

Her mother’s eyes were so tired and distant when Wrenpaw had seen her across camp. Life returned to them when she turned her head to look at Wrenpaw, and her voice was soft and warm as it often was when she spoke to her children. Perchstar didn’t smile, but she never needed to for Wrenpaw to feel it anyway. Wrenpaw was far more expressive than most of her family. Perchstar and both of her sisters were far quieter and neutral in their behavior than Wrenpaw ever managed to be. Wrenpaw could only guess that she got her personality from her father, given that Felix had seemed high energy when she met him. But, still, despite the difference in their manner of expression, Wrenpaw has never had trouble understanding her family and feeling their love.

Love for her mother filled her completely, and Wrenpaw’s smile was sweet as she nudged the fish closer and immediately plopped down at her mother’s side, pressing close enough to feel the warmth of Perchstar’s fur.

“You don’t need to worry about me, mama.” Wrenpaw promised, turning her head to bonk it into Perchstar’s shoulder and rub a few times. You have plenty enough on your paws already without me adding to your burden. Pulling back to offer Perchstar another smile, she said, “I’m tough." She puffed out her chest as if to prove it, and her smile widened into a grin. After a few seconds, she sobered a little again and added, "And now I’m on the mend, so there’s nothing to worry about at all anymore.”

Then, Wrenpaw paused and pressed a little closer, and softly said, “I’ve been worried about you too.” She wanted to apologize for not being more helpful for these past few moons, but she bit the urge down. She didn’t want to make her mother feel as though she needed to soothe that guilt for Wrenpaw. She knew Perchstar wouldn’t blame her the way Wrenpaw blamed herself. "...Are you doing okay?"
