He had watched his denmates fail miserably so many times it was starting to hurt. Was no kitten in this camp competent? Had every kit been born with feathers and beetles for brains? Maybe they hadn't gotten enough milk or they hadn't gotten enough air when they were born. Whatever the case, Batkit was going to prove to them that there was a way to escape the camp that didn't warrant them getting caught right away.

He had gathered a few of the kits together again, promising Crabkit his fresh-kill if they got out without making a sound. Batkit didn't really want to sacrifice his meal, but maybe Crabkit would take the bait. Orchidkit and... Orchidkit. He wasn't so worried about them screwing things up - he was, however, worried about Nettlepaw trying to take control of the situation as always. Not this time.

Batkit gave the cluster of fur balls a final once over and crouched down low to the ground, creeping towards the edge of camp. A flick of his tail for his companions to follow him and stick close to the shadows, and he hoped he would not be spotted.

The promise of fresh-kill was an enticing one but it was more an adventure he was after. Following Batkit and Nettlekit around was the highlight of everyday. He wasn't quite sure why he longed to escape the confines of camp so badly but it seemed that every one of his denmates was feeling the same way. When they were apprentices, the lot of them would be able to roam the pine trees and marshlands, uninhibited shadows of the night. At that thought alone, Crabkit almost shot out of camp immediately. It was a glance at Batkit and the brief reminder of promised prey.

He watched the other kit's tail flick and bounded forward a few step, silent, despite the quick motions. Drawing close to Batkit, he meowed, "Batkit we're so close! We're so close! I'm going to catch a whole frog for all of us!" The fervent whisper was hardly a whisper, a vibrant purr fracturing any attempts at maintaining the silence.

Sunflare had to admit to finding the antics of the current generation of kits amusing. The fuzzy little bodies tumbling one after the other across camp elicited a small purr from the senior warrior as he observed. Strolling lazily over, the long-legged tom came to a stop in front of them. “Now, what have we here?” he purred. “Fierce ShadowClan warriors, it seems. Your stalking leaves something to be desired, but I see potential. Perhaps I shall mentor one of you. I could mold any one of you all into a fine warrior that StarClan themselves would be proud of.” Eyes glinting, he met each little gaze in turn. “How about a lesson, here and now?”

Batkit froze up and slowly turned towards Crabkit, rigid with disbelief. He had to admit, he would've loved a frog, but Stars why did his denmate have to be so loud? Then again, looking down at his paws he noticed that the sun had shifted and no longer were they in the shadows. Drat! We've been foiled!

With a twitch of his tail, the striped tom turned to look at Sunflare, head tilting back to gaze up at the warrior. "A lesson?" He echoed, casting a glance to Crabkit briefly. "Teach us how to catch a frog.

Orchidkit had known about this expedition outside of camp - it is one of many organized by the same faces in the nursery. The idea of being left out made her anxious. Determined not to miss this one, she bounced forward - unfortunately not before Sunflare spotted the attempt. She heard something about "training" and "molding one of you all into a fine warrior" - that has to include her, right?

"Pick me! I want to learn!" She yowled as she ran towards Sunflare. "I want to be molded into a fine warrior! Me, me, me!"

A lesson sounded so fun and even better - it'd include Crabkit! And... we'll learn how to catch a frog, and maybe a snake! Sunflare is going to teach us everything!
