Regrets chased Birdstar like her own shadow. The doomed alliance between their neighbors was one of them. But, far more insignificant on the grand scale, her shouting at Stormwatcher still bothered her. Not so often as it once did--if only because he'd told her not to be sorry for it--but the nagging still came. It was callous to think, but Birdstar couldn't imagine looking at Stormwatcher a year ago and feeling more than the general affection extended to her Clanmates. Now, kicking through the snow leading up the snowy rise overlooking the colorful twoleg dens below... Birdstar was grateful for him. Perhaps, in a world where they'd both been better, her bickering with Fogfeather could have been more like this. The thought made her chest squeeze.

"Stormwatcher," she said quietly, possessed by the sudden urge to speak. "Have I ever told you directly how good of a warrior you've become?"
